The second poll of the JMP User Platform was released on June 2, 2022 and centered around the JMP Analytic Workflow. The main goals of this poll were to (1) learn more about users’ frequency and proficiency in the various analytic capabilities of the JMP Analytic Workflow, and (2) contribute information to support the taxonomy project. Below is a summary of major findings—the raw data from Qualtrics as well as the survey is attached.
Response Rate & Respondent Profiles
A total of 3,033 invitations were sent through Qualtrics and 260 responses were received resulting in a response rate of 8.57%. Most of the responses represented people from the Americas (56%) followed by Asia Pacific (31%), Europe (12%), and Middle East/Africa (1.2%). Of respondents, most reported using JMP for more than 10 years (46%) followed by 6-10 years (23%) and 3-5 years (20%).

To assist with the labeling of industry and professions for the taxonomy project, the industry and job titles were asked of poll takers. The top three industries consisted of academic (18.92%), other (18.15%), and semiconductor industry (16.99%). Some provided industries from those who selected ‘other’ include aerospace, automotive, and financial.

Also important was to identify appropriate job titles encapsulated in each industry. Below is a word cloud of the self-reported job titles among which professor was the highest reported title.

Analytic Capabilities
An important aspect of this poll was to discern how often users perform various analytic capabilities in the JMP Analytic workflow and their proficiency at such capabilities. Below are distributions in response to asking, “How frequently are you performing the following capabilities?” and, “How proficient are you in the following capabilities?”.

Further, it was also desired to identify analytic capabilities users find most positive by asking, “Of the analytic capabilities that you interact with, which one have you had the most positive experience using?”. At 39%, Data Exploration and visualization was the most reported option. A quote from a user highlights their reasoning for their positive experience with this capability: “The interactive functionality and the ability to quickly filter the data is very useful. I have used these capabilities many times in meetings to review and discuss the data and the results of the analysis with my scientists and engineers. Very productive!”

Also important was to gather opinions on opportunities to improve analytic capabilities. It was asked, “Of all the analytic capabilities, which one most needs improvement?”. After ‘no improvements needed’ (20%), ‘automation and scripting’ was the highest reported option (12%). A quote from a user sheds light on potential changes to improve this capability: “Despite the scripting library, a more hand-holding teaching of scripting would be useful. Even the log recording feels unclear on how to use it to automate stuff.”
