Welcome to the JMP Development Update for June 17, 2022!
We will have our second quarter JMP company Rest and Recharge day on Monday, June 20th in observation of the Juneteenth holiday on Sunday! You do not need to take a day off in Workday for Monday. But you do need to spend the day doing something other than work. I hope you all enjoy the long, dual holiday weekend as we also celebrate Father’s Day on Sunday. Whether you are a dad, are celebrating your dad or partner, or are remembering a father, grandfather, uncle or any other dad figure who has been an important influence on you, I hope you have a great one!
We’re in Code Review mode for JMP 17. Please create your Swarm review on jmpswarm.na.sas.com or arrange an in-person or virtual walkthrough of your planned change with another developer BEFORE you submit code into main. Please also consider inviting the tester who will be looking at your change to the review, since understanding the nature of your code change helps the tester better understand how to verify it.
Thanks to everyone for working to resolve issues before we reach our Code Approval milestone on 6/22/22. At that point, you will need to send a note to the JMP Approvers list and secure 4 approvals before you push a change to main. Please include a link to your Swarm review, a link to the Jira issue, and a description of the issue and any potential impact to doc/L10N/testing. When you make your push, please reference the Jira issue number so that the Jira-Swarm integration adds a link to the changelist.
We’ll be freezing for JMP 17 EA9 on 7/8/22. Thanks for continuing to update your feature pages with important fixes that customers should know about. This late EA is will help us collect important bug reports that we can address either before we freeze JMP 17.0 or during the JMP 17.1 cycle. Of course, we’ll also get some input on features that can be added to the list for future releases.
Speaking of JMP 17, I attended the product management team first JMP 17 New Features training for field teams on Tuesday morning. At both this and the Coffee with PM session on Tuesday evening, there was a lot of excitement about JMP 17 from teams around the world! (Please note: click the links to request recording access) Even as development wraps up JMP 17 work and we collaborate with product management and marketing to release the software and share details with customers, the PM team is already gathering information and evaluating priorities for JMP 18.
Mia mentioned that the PM team is getting ready to close responses to the internal JMP 18 Global Roadmap survey as well as a sister survey that was sent to EA customers. Mia will publish the final results on JMP Live when they’re ready. However, she did share one sneak peek at one aspect of the results below! This graph is brought to you by the new multiple response functionality in Graph Builder (which Mia loves) and summarizes the 85 EA customer responses so far about what they thought might be the most important JMP 17 new features for them.

As you can see, JMP Search is one of the JMP 17 NFs that showed up on the list above. In case you are wondering, the JMP search interface looks for matches based on your JMP display language. On Mac, this language preference is driven by the OS. On Windows, it is driven by the language specified in your JMP preferences. Search queries will only be understood in the language currently showing in the JMP user interface, and results will only be shown in that one language.
This feature has been through internationalization (I18N) testing performed by our JMP Beijing testing team (as have other major JMP 17 features). Nala’s team also helped us give Evan feedback on searches when running JMP in Simplified Chinese. Some additional testing in other display languages was done by the Cary testing team and the team has put some unit tests in place.
However, we’d like to broaden this effort by asking for your help, if you regularly run JMP in another language. Mia is helping solicit input from internal JMP team members across the world who use JMP in languages other than English. If you’d like to participate and offer search feedback, you can respond here to the survey: JMP Search Localization – Internal Feedback. Mia asks that you use JMP 17 EA8 and share your feedback by Tuesday, June 21. Thanks in advance for your help!
Finally, thanks very much to Chandra Ramnarayanan, Sam Gardner, and Brady Brady for showing off their Quality by Design risk assessment add-in at the JMP dev meeting! If you missed the meeting, you can find a downloaded copy of the recording here. The chat was very active with questions and comments ongoing throughout the whole meeting, so thanks to everyone who contributed thoughts and feedback on the functionality the team showed. The add-in is not currently available to customers on the file exchange, but you can contact Chandra, Sam or Brady if you’d like to give it a test drive and offer your feedback.

I also helped Karen with reviewing documentation on ALT designs, MSA designs, and the explorers and Ryan with reviewing our Statistical Engineering case study paper submitted this week (kudos to Ryan for leading the effort!). I’ve also got another paper soon to be submitted on Order of Addition Experiments with Dennis Lin and his post-doc.
- Peng: Early in the week, I worked on JMP-306 S1241900: Scripting Index should show ScriptItems corresponding to SiType::Columns, in order to reduce duplicated codes. Then fixed (JMP-12941) JMP hangs when there is only one observation, which I introduced in a recent change. Thanks to Rajneesh and Elizabeth. And, I am now working with Joseph and Ryan on Easy DOE.
Host
- Paul N:
- Fixed JMP-13003 – Biplot Rays lose labels when journaled. A defect/enhancement making display3Dtext segments scale when using the settings slider caused this issue. The scaled size utilized a new variable that maintained the scaled size, but that was never journaled out, so on loading a journal it wasn’t initialized. The fix makes sure that the text size journaled is the updated scaled size and that no new variable is introduced into the journaling, so all older journals should be compatible.
- Working on macOS Metal 3D graphics. Found an example program of 3D picking using Metal, however it’s written in Swift. So I’ve had to learn just enough Swift to be dangerous. That way I can rewrite the example in ObjC. Once that’s working I can look to implement the within JMP. Picking has been one of the sticking point in making the conversion from OpenGL 1.x to Metal.
- John Schroedl: Working on Privacy settings and UI for telemetry work. Icon and recent file fixes for Workflows. Updated copyrights in various tools included in our install.
- Daniel Powell: Jess Ng and I are working to connect the new JMP PER API into Mulesoft.
HTML5
- John Powell:
- Triaged bugs. Outlined a plan for JMP 17.1 for the HTML5 team. Added JMP Live Best Practices for Open in JMP, custom maps, and column switchers. Discussed HTML5 Interactive testing automation with Hui and Steve.
- Gave Dieter some details on HTML5 performance improvements in JMP 17 for a call with WL Gore. Investigated a problem seen by Regeneron with scatterplots in a dashboard on JMP Live
- Investigated an issue with Custom Maps on JMP Live reported by Florence Kussener (WEBJMP-5629) and discovered a related bug while investigating (WEBJMP-5623). Investigated a crash when publishing a Control Chart with a Column Switcher attached in an unsupported way (WEBJMP-5607) and provided a work-around.
- Started Pre-work for Situational Leadership course
- Mayowa: Fixed bugs with brush selection in box plots (JMPHTML-1635), also fixed a related bug with brush selecting box plot outliers that involved modifying how markers are selected in interactive HTML. Currently, working on fixing selection and tooltip bugs for box plots with shortest half set. (JMPHTML-1512, JMPHTML-1510).
- Paul S: Working on Text and Font issues for HTML5.
Statistics
- Elizabeth: Investigating issues enabling a weight variable with Fit Mixed as it may point to where estimation of the scale parameter in the Negative Binomial distribution for GLMMs is not quite correct. The negative binomial distribution is the top requested additional distribution for GLMMs and is vital for count data.
- Annie: Fixing Control Chart Jira issues and doing Swarm code reviews for others.
- Laura C-S: Continued fixing bugs and a couple crashes in SEM.
Stat Documentation
- Colleen: Documented the Design Space Profiler, worked on some of the FDE updates, and started putting things in the New Feature document.

- Jacob: Testing Easy DOE, updating unit tests and verifying Jira tickets. Investigating potential performance issues. Responding to EA feedback for Easy DOE.
Note from Shannon
Have a great Juneteenth and Father’s Day weekend!
By the way, the Juneteenth holiday celebrating the end of slavery in the United States has been celebrated for 160 years but only became a federal holiday in 2021. JMP is observing Juneteenth with a day off that we will use for rest and recharge. Interested in what some other big tech companies are planning? Check out this article.
By the way, tech company Google has featured Juneteenth-themed doodles in recent years. But it wasn’t always so. Artist Davian Chester went viral when he created his own Juneteenth doodle in 2018 when Google did not feature one (see one story about it here and another from the Washington Post here).
