What’s new and how to make the most of it
The first JMP 17 training provided an overview and demonstration of high-value, broad-impact new features, what they do, why they matter and the value they bring, who will care about them, qualifying questions, and how they map to the JMP analytic workflow.
JMP 17 will launch in October 2022 and Dave Richardson (@dave_richardson), VP of Sales Americas & EMEA, emphasized that “since it only comes around every 18 months, we certainly want to make the most of it.”
What does a new release provide?
- New features for existing users
- New features which may appeal to other non-users at customer sites
- New features for new prospects (or maybe even older prospects)
A new release of JMP helps us secure renewals, drive upgrades and acquire new logos; it also offers a chance to update customers on changes in JMP and what to expect. “This all translates into a valid reason to call your customers,” Dave explained. New releases also remove excuses against competitive products and provide additional justification for our yearly price increases.
How should sales prepare for the launch?
Step 1: Learn what’s new and why it matters to your customers (who, what, why)
Step 2: Develop a 6-month multi-step plan to promote the latest to high-growth accounts
Step 3: Execute your plan as a team
High-impact features in JMP 17
Development and Product Management have done a tremendous amount of work to make our great products even better.
“You’ll see JMP 17 is really a great product, and it’s true for JMP, JMP Pro, JMP Live and JMP Clinical,” said Dan Valente (@Daniel_Valente), Senior Manager of Product Management. The new features are so valuable it “makes it hard to go back to a previous version.”
The Product Management team covered:
OSI Pi Data Import
Workflow Capability: Data Access
Dan Valente
What? Allows analysts who need to access time series data stored in an OSIsoft Pi server. Part of a multi-release strategy to expand the scope of data connectors available.
Why? To make this data as easy to get to as File > Open – there is rich data available in Pi and it’s been hard to get to, requiring coding and interacting with APIs.
Who cares? Anyone wishing to enrich JMP models with sensor/IOT/ Industry 4.0 data, which might already be available.

Workflow Builder
Workflow Capability: Automation and Scripting
Dan Valente
What? Easily capture steps of an interactive JMP session to a graphical workflow script for automation, teaching or reproducibility – without being an expert JMP scripter.
Why? “To go from a non-scripter to a some-scripter is a big step,” said Dan. Plus, JSL drives enterprise adoption. Once an organization starts building custom apps or has script critical to running their business, it makes it hard to move to a different software solution. Workflow Builder also helps with onboarding and upskilling in an organization.
Who cares? Anyone who does the same thing over and over, needs to document work; anyone who struggles with more projects than time in day. “The value can’t be overstated,” said Dan.

JMP Search
Workflow Capabilities: All
Bryan Fricke (@Bryan_Fricke)
What? Contextual search for JMP features, helps guide users to relevant features and external resources, helps users know what JMP has to offer.
Why? To “guide users to features of interest and educate them about what features are available,” said Bryan. To make users more productive and efficient.
Who cares? Trial and new users, users looking to do something they haven’t done before. Expert users may find it easier to use search than to go through the menu.

JMP Live

Workflow Capabilities: Data Access and Sharing and Communicating Results
Dieter Pisot (@dieter_pisot)
- Data refresh
What? Connect directly to data sources and schedule refreshes.
Why? Simplifies refresh of data.
Who cares? Publishers and JMP Live admins who need to refresh data.
- Hierarchical folders
What? Nested folders.
Why? To better organize content and control access.
Who cares? Publishers and JMP Live admins.
- Publish dialog
What? Publishing native to JMP Live.
Why? “It makes JMP Live less dependent on JMP,” explained Dieter.
Who cares? Publishers.
- Data table viewer
What? View data in JMP Live.
Why? No need to download or have JMP installed.
Who cares? Non-JMP users, publishers.

Spectral Analysis
Workflow Capability: Advanced Statistical Modeling
Mia Stephens (@mia_stephens)
What? Allows users to preprocess, then model and analyze spectral data, which are functional in nature and often have sharp peaks. It used to require an add-in to do this, now it is built into the Functional Data Explorer platform in JMP 17 (along with additional FDE improvements in JMP 17 and more to come in JMP 18).
Why? To provide a suite of chemometric tools for preprocessing and multivariate analysis of spectral data.
Who? Analytic chemists, chemometricians, chemical engineers, materials scientists and materials engineers.

Easy DOE
Workflow Capability: Design of Experiments
Mia Stephens
What? A new platform that includes all the steps in the DOE workflow in a tabbed container – from defining and designing experiment to analyzing, prediction and reporting findings. Two modes offered: Guided and Flexible.
Why? To make it easier to get started with DOE, keep all work in a single container (.jmpdoe). The guided mode simplifies the interfaces, choices, analyses.
Who cares? Anyone getting started with DOE, trainers and educators, companies who want to spread DOE within the organization, experimenters who want all work in one file that can be easily saved, reopened, and shared with others.

JMP Clinical
Sam Gardner (@SamGardner)
Highlights:
Now a JMP only product
Speed and simplicity
Better UI/UX
Comes with JMP Pro
Sam’s demo compared JMP Clinical 8 and JMP Clinical 17, emphasizing the simplified interface and streamlined workflows.
“With the new speed and simplicity of the product, I really think every sales team should be able to demonstrate the product and feel confident they can do it,” said Sam. “And we’re going to do what we can to make sure that all the teams are enabled to do that.”

JMP Pro for Genomics
Sam Gardner
Highlights:
JMP Pro is now our platform for genetic and genomic data analysis. JMP Pro has been optimized in version 17 to better handle large wide tables, and we have added and improved associated analysis methods that work with these large tables, including Multivariate Embedding, cluster analysis, principal component analysis, and response screening. Also, several commonly used genetic and genomic data formats will be able to be directly opened in JMP Pro.
There are two new platforms for genetic marker analysis (Marker Statistics) and model based genetic breeding simulations (Marker Simulation), which replaces the capabilities that were in JMP Genomics and that many customers valued in the product.
