Welcome to the JMP Development Update for June 10, 2022!
Congratulations go out this week to Ryan Lekivetz! This week Brad Jones announced Ryan’s promotion to manager of the DOE and Reliability team. Ryan has been with JMP for nearly a decade as a DOE developer, balancing software development with an extensive publication and presentation list and many patents. In addition to his unquestioned technical excellence and easygoing personality, we have all come to appreciate Ryan’s creativity when sharing his passion for DOE. Whether it’s in JMP blogs about hard boiled eggs (or chips, cookies, or coffee!), Discovery talks about new features, or in Meet the Developers sessions, Ryan is an expert at sharing examples that are relatable for all users. Although he is handing the mantle of group leadership to Ryan, Brad assures us that he isn’t going anywhere. He’ll continue his ongoing research exploring new DOE capabilities for JMP.
At the end of the day on Wednesday, we passed our Code Review milestone for JMP 17.0. This means that any source code change pushed into the main branch from this point on will require a code review (notable exceptions being code comments, scripting index examples and marking strings for extraction).
If you are setting up a code review in Swarm, please mention the Jira issue number in your text. And of course, you should always mention the relevant Jira issue in your Perforce push description along with the name of the person who did your code review. We will enter Code Approval mode on 6/22/22. At that point, we should be resolving important and critical fixes only, and each push will need to be pre-approved before submission by 4 members of the JMP Approvers list.
The doc and L10N teams have been working their way through a long list of deliverables that must be finalized, translated and returned into the software before we can create a JMP 17.0 final installer candidate. The L10N team will hand off our final batch of JMP 17.0 UI strings next Monday June 13. Among the many other projects ongoing this cycle are menu description and quick reference cards, Discovering JMP (translated for all languages), JMP sample data, tutorials, built-ins and JMP Live UI strings and documentation. Thanks very much to all for helping get these projects through the final stages!
Thanks very much also to the JMP Live team for presenting on JMP 17 additions at yesterday’s dev meeting! If you missed the meeting, you can find a link to a downloaded copy of the recording here. We had record attendance at the meeting (80+ attendees) and a very active chat session going on during it! In addition, I’ve had lots of interest in the recording from internal team members who were not able to attend. Thanks to the JMP Live team members for monitoring and answering questions that came in during the demo!
Thanks to Tonya Mauldin for sharing the details of recent beta feedback with crashes selected from Salesforce! As Duane and Tonya have been updating their reporting for Salesforce customer tracks, so too has Myron been updating the crash system code to get crash files from Salesforce, place them into a processing queue for symbolization and update our crash database with the contents. With much of the code now updated, Myron and I will be moving into a testing phase and hope to get the production pipeline running soon.

Host
- Michael H:
- WWDC Week. Watching sessions, meeting with Apple engineers. Updated our ‘notarize’ script to use the “new” (1 yo) ‘notarytool’ instead of the deprecated (going away next fall) ‘altool’. Explored with Apple engineers why we can’t run JMP with both ASAN + UBSAN enabled. Answer: it makes our executable too large. I was given workarounds to experiment with, but none of them seem viable so far.
- Got parallel building working. This required explicitly specifying the dependencies among our jmptojava dylibs.
- Worked with Jim and Nick on getting JMP 17 build systems moved to Xcode 13. Worked with Jim on investigating why JMP testing was being run with Rosetta on some M1 build systems.
- John Schroedl: Telemetry server work. Investigate mystery crash when running JMP with automation.
HTML5
JMP Live
- Aurora: Presented part of the JMP Live 17.0 summary demo. Walked through some more content with Susan Conaghan, who is asking really good probing questions about JMP Live 17.0 in the course of documenting it. Bug fixing related to unique titles, bulk deletion, download records, updating data, and sorting of the posts in a folder.
Statistics
- Elizabeth: Fixed a bug with the new SOM clustering heatmap with hidden/excluded rows found by John Powell & the HTML5 team in the course of their work. Continued work on implementing extrapolation control in the context of mixed models.
- Laura C-S: Fixed lots of bugs in SEM, including a crash with the profiler and another when models had no variances specified. Wrote some notes on Model Shortcuts for documentation. Continued supporting Haley on her summer project.
Stat Documentation
- Colleen: worked on some string edits, finished updating the documentation for the updates to PCA, reviewed SVEM material for Michael, and worked in FDE a bit.
Stat Testing
- Jacob: Testing Easy DOE, interactively testing new builds and writing tests for split plot designs. Participating in the UI/UX workstream. Investigating potential performance issues.
- Tonya: Working on bug verification, unit test clean up, and beta reporting.
Product Management
- Bryan F:
- Splash screens: Completed and delivered updated graphics for 9 Windows installers. Revised the product splash screens to reflect JMP Statistical Discovery, LLC. When doing so, I made a minor modification to the graphics so that the gradient in the background is a bit more subtle.
- Icons: For the Product Management team, I created 2 more icons for the data discovery workflow and added a blue gradient to the background to each of the 16 icons. For Workflow Builder, I created and delivered 3 new icons on Windows. Chris Humphrey showed me how to deliver the icons on the Mac and I created a Changelist for review by Chris and Ernest. I created an icon for opening files from JMP Live on JMP Desktop with input from Michael Goff.
- Functional UX Workstream: I processed the results from dot voting to determine the priority on the various ideas that the team developed. I met with Ryan Lekivetz to have a conversation about the UX Development Process meeting as he led the conversation this week about Easy DOE usability testing. I met with Geoffrey Mann, Sam Gardner, and Anisa Scott to get an overview of JMP Clinical’s UI. We plan to meet monthly in order to have conversations about usability enhancements.
Technical Support
- Duane: Nothing much new to report this week. Here are the TS JMP Live reports (JMP Live 16) combining historic data from Sirius with new case data from Service Cloud. These are still being modified, though! After seeing yesterday’s JMP Live demo, I am eager to begin working in JMP 17, as the changes and improvements to JMP Live 17 are impressive! Here is information regarding Jira tickets opened by Tech Support.

These lists augment the component owners list.
- Mandy: Continued Workflow Builder efforts. Finished preparing a short demo that I shared with Super Users from the Community on Wednesday hosted by Ryan Gilmore – good comments, feedback and questions, and opened at least one JIRA ticket from the meeting. Mostly finished with a short blog on WFB and will pass it along to a few folks to read and edit before sharing with Arati. Working to verify WFB JIRA’s as quickly as I can and trying to make sure things are fixed the same way on Mac and Windows. Working on demo additions in hopes of presenting at Discovery and for a July 14th Dev meeting presentation with Ernest. Took PLATO LMS class assigned to us.

Data Discovery
- Evan: Search now fully supports all type of menu items on both hosts (portable, host, edit, add-in). Added action recording for Compress Columns and Anonymize. Prototyping action recording for some other medium priority items. Consulting on Sikuli tests. Working on some other minor Search and Log improvements.
- Sibusizo: Working towards a new feature that allows a user to position or level hierboxes through the scripting interface. Next, I have been looking at a bug on mosaic plots where reversing the axis does not reverse the mosaic plot. I am also working on a graph builder bug where a user specified fixed color is not observed on marker labels.
- Dan S: Fixed data filter <
- Dave B: Updated parallel plot so that is shows categorical values more consistently, updated jmprunner so html output can be viewed side by side with images created directly from jmp reports as opposed to the current above/below layout
DOE and Reliability
- Peng: Fixed a few newly reported issues from Bill Meeker: JMP-12801: Residual plot should not show markers associated with censored observation; JMP-12810: Need to handle a case which MLE does not exist. After we entered review mode, I tried to pick up low risk items for missing info for SiType::Columns ScriptItems in my platforms. However, as I progressed to address them, I saw that addressing them literally has the consequence of producing considerable duplicated code. So I am trying to find a more general solution for JMP-306. I did one round of changes yesterday, reviewed by Evan and Ernest. Later I realized that further changes can be made in the portable layer to eliminate all duplicate code for this issue from platform code. The second change is under review now.
Note from Shannon
Thanks to Susan Conaghan, our JMP documentation writer who lives in Scotland, for sharing some fun pictures from local celebrations of the Queen of England’s 70thJubilee! Susan said, “I dressed up like a goth and my youngest dressed like an 80s girl and we participated in a Jubilee parade with the local stables. Alesia was on horseback, there weren’t enough horses for all the kids so I walked. It was great fun! I’m not a big fan of the monarchy, but any excuse to dress up like a goth is a good one for me! Ha ha…” She also included a picture of her friend’s pony Buddy who was dressed up for the occasion too.
Have a great weekend, all!
