UPDATE SEPTEMBER 23, 2022. I am adding Byrons' video to Comments. Hedid a good job based on Di's model and incorporated some techniques that fit with adult learning practices.
Chuck @chuck_boiler , Mary @MaryLoveless and Nick @nick_shelton agreed to standardizing the weekly Getting Started with JMP to assure all attendees in the US get the same content.
SEs will continue to present Getting Started, held every Friday 1-2 pm ET in the US. We will remove the On-Deman dversion from jmp.com. The full rationale is here.
Four files attached (zipped) are used in the session:
- Getting Started with JMP from JMP Education.jrn
- Big Class.jmp
- JMP Orders.jmp
- Products and Supplier Info.xlsx
Plus, Monica Beals, @monica_beals Di Michelson @Di_Michelson , and Ledi Trutna. @ledi_trutna from JMP Eduation provided instructions, with some notes from me (Gail Massari) in the beginning, to guide you through the steps. It is Getting Started with JMP Flow from JMP Education (also in .zip file),
A video of a successful session Di held at Discovery Americas 2022 is also available as a model. NOTE: The video is for internal JMP training purposes only, not for prospects or customers.
The session uses an inductive technique where you show JMP windows, tables, and reports whose attributes you then point out and discuss. Part-way through, you import Excel for the purpose of merging data to solve the problem of missing data and then create basic reports using Graph Builder to get people started visualizing information.
For an example of how to present, see the video here and consider incorporating these techniques:
- Use the Laser Pointer as much as you can. The cursor arrow is hard to see, and, for new users, you really need to direct them to the area that you describe.
- When speaking about a particular table, platform or report, consider ENLARGING that window so the viewer can better see and focus on what you are doing. This means some stretching and shrinking, and the time it takes to do that is minimal and can help the viewer transition to what you will introduce yet.
Based on common post-session questions, consider incorporating these items into the flow where appropriate:
- Data Table Column Properties: Set Value Order for a relevant column and then point out the order in the graph later, explaining JMP has default value order that you can change.
- Data Table Column Properties: Set some Value Label for a relevant column and then point them out on the graph later, showing how you did it from Data Table but can also do it right from a graph.
- Graph Builder: Show that after you click Done, and then want to change your graph, the Control Panel disappears, so you get the Control Panel back from the Red Triangle. Then can change the graph.
- Graph Builder: Show how to drag something out of a zone, then remove it or move it to another zone.
Caution: Because you use Graph Builder (which is so powerful) it could be easy to go down the rabbit hole answering complex Graph Builder questions. Be cauthous and you can also point them to the Mastering JMP Graph Builder session
