The chart builder in JMP helps you interactively build visualizations to explore and describe your data. The chart builder allows you to chart one or more variables at a time, including line charts, box charts, histograms, mosaic charts, maps, and much more. The following video gives you a short demonstration, and the instructions and guidelines to follow will help you use the chart builder on your own.
Drag and drop to visualize data:
- From any JMP data table, select Charts > Chart Builder .

- Drag a variable from the list of variables and drop it on the designated drop zone. In the examples to the right, Weight is in the X zone and Height is in the Y zone.
- To add a grouping variable, drag and drop the variable onto Group X either Group Y . In the example, Sex (sex) is in the zone Group X.
- To change the graphic presentation, click on a chart icon . Or, click and drag a chart icon within the chart frame. In this example, a Line of Fit has been added.

- change the Summary Statistic and other display options for selected graphic elements.
- Click the button Ready (upper left corner) when finished.
Guidelines:
- Right-click on the chart to change chart properties.
- To replace a variable with a new variable, drag the new variable and drop it in the middle of the drop zone.
- By default, the chart builder displays individual observations as points. If continuous variables are in both the X and Y zones, a smooth line is presented (lambda = 0.05).

- More than one variable can be assigned as X or Y, or in a grouping area. Drag a variable to the right or left of an existing variable in the corresponding area - the area highlighted in blue tells you where the new variable will be placed when dropped.
- To change the modeling type (to use different graphical elements) right-click on the variable and select the new data type.
Other placement areas:
- Drop a variable in the zone text wrap grouping to see a graph for each group in the grouping variable.
- Drop a variable in the zone color to generate a legend and color it according to the values of the variable.

- Drop a variable in the zone overlap to color and overlay graphs for each variable value on the graph.
- If the data has been summarized (a frequency variable exists), drag the variable to the area Frequency .
- If a column defines a physical shape, drag the variable to the zone Shape to create a map (shape files must exist).
- Drop a variable in Size to change the sizes of the markers or shapes on the map according to the values of the size variable.
