A productive year for patents
JMP inventors were awarded 10 patents for their innovations last year.
“There is a lot of innovative work that goes on at JMP and the numerous patents in our company are evidence of this," said Laura Castro-Schilo, Senior Research Statistician Developer. "Acquiring patents is one way to secure JMP’s future as we continue to increase our unique, cutting-edge offerings. Personally, I just love being able to think of ways to solve problems in a creative and supportive environment.”

SAS held a celebration dinner May 24 at The Umstead Hotel. Legal Counsel Director Tim Wilson offered opening remarks. “So much of what we do in R&D fits into the development, the ‘D’ category,” he said. “What you have done by becoming patent inventors is on the ‘R’ side, not staying at the same level but bringing it up. That takes commitment, experience and often time away from loved ones.”
Laura was among the attendees. “It was great to have an opportunity to celebrate our accomplishments among peers and learn about all the other patents that were awarded last year!” she said

The SAS patent process
Clay Barker, Principal Research Statistician Developer, has served on the SAS patent committee for about eight years. “I was very excited to join the committee. We are doing lots of inventive things in the JMP group and I think that having representation on the patent committee truly validates that.”
He described the process: “At those meetings, inventors from all over the company have an opportunity to present and explain why SAS should pursue patenting their invention/idea. Members of the committee like myself provide feedback on these inventions which helps the patent lawyers decide how SAS should move forward. A lot of times we also talk about ways to make the invention even better, which is cool.”
Since the patent office uses the First to File approach, whoever files a patent first is considered the inventor.
“The patent attorneys at SAS, Dwight Thompson and John Sieman, make the process a breeze,” said Ryan. “Any of us would be happy to help anyone wanting to get started.”
Clay agrees. “Long story short: if you think that you’ve done something that might be patentable, you should go for it. We are so fortunate that we get to work with patent lawyers…they are great at finding angles that make our ideas patentable. I was thrilled that Dwight and John won the 2020 High Five Award.”

Clay enjoys his involvement in the patent committee because “folks at SAS are solving lots of cool problems and I’ve gotten an inside look at a lot of them.”
But it’s not all fun and games. “A handful of times I’ve even broken the bad news that we shouldn’t pursue patenting an inventor’s idea because it has already been in JMP for a while!”
