Welcome to the JMP Development update for May 27, 2022!
Thanks for the continued bug triage and fixes! Once we return from the holiday weekend, it will be ~5 weeks until we freeze for JMP 17 EA9.
As you are wrapping up work on your features pages in Confluence and sharing important changes for EA9, please remember to check the boxes for HTML5 and JMP Live testing on the feature readiness checklist, if you have done this step. If you have not yet tested whether your feature exports correctly into local interactive HTML or flows correctly into JMP Live, please try it out. You can contact Audrey Shull, Hui Di or Anna Kushner for guidance if you’re not sur what to do. Similarly, if you have an item on the late features page, please make sure you fill out the boxes with details if the change impacts the feature for HTML5 or JMP Live.
Congratulations go out this week to Mia Stephens and many others on the JMP team who support our STIPS online course. STIPS has now surpassed 47,000 enrollments worldwide. Wow! Mia reports that we’re getting ready to add Spanish to the STIPS catalog with a Spanish translation of Module 1 set to be released within the next week or two, thanks largely to translation work by JMP SE Marilyn Wheatley!

- Wrote an article for InsideJMP, “Planning Ahead to JMP 18”, which includes an internal survey about JMP capabilities and potential high-level initiatives for JMP 18. This article will be featured next week, but if you’d like take part in the survey here is the link: JMP 18 Roadmap - Global Survey.
- Bryan F: Worked on a couple of icons for Workflow Builder for recording behavior, reviewed strings for JMP Live, and started the process of updating splash screens with JMP LLC information. In the UX workstream focused on style, I showed the team a minor color change made to JMP 17 and several more ideas that may be appropriate for JMP 17. I also showed the results from a couple of preference tests. For the UX Workstream focused on function, I showed the results of creating an affinity map of the various ideas for updates to the Bivariate platform. The next step is to create a form to vote on the categories shown in the affinity map. In the UX workstream focused on the development process, we developed plans for conducting follow-up usability tests on MSA Design. We also plan to conduct usability tests of Easy DOE in the near future.

DOE
- Peng:
- Crowdsourced with Caleb to scrape some autonomous vehicle data from public sources and started to work on a conference talk project. Fixed a crash in Reliability Growth that Caleb discovered while analyzing the data. Continued research on analyzing recurrence data.
- Worked with Evan and Annie on providing a generic solution in the portable layer, so that when a user broadcasts a command that saves some results to a new table, the portable layer will recognize the situation and combine individual tables into a single table with ID labels. However, during the code review process, we realized that the impact of the change is too broad, and it is too late in the development cycle. I decided to postpone the change until the beginning of the next release.
- Scraped data off two old papers that Bill Meeker provided and analyzed them with the Repeated Measures Degradation. The platform works as expected. Reported my findings.
- Joseph: Continued Easy DOE work, mainly Analyze, Predict, and Report tabs and related transitions between Guided and Flexible mode. Also, working through various bugs.
- Caleb: Fixed some crashes in Compare Designs. Started work on a reliability project with Peng, looking at disengagement data on autonomous vehicles from the California DMV. We’re looking to present on this project at the ISSRE conference in Charlotte and perhaps JMP Discovery. Had a great time representing JMP at patent dinner with Laura Castro-Schilo!
Host
- Michael H: Added a command line option “-Stringish YES” to easily use “hack mode” for a Mac Debug build. (“Stringlish” was suggested by John Sall and I think it’s a great name for this!)
- Daniel: JMP Check for Updates has worked in production successfully and we have now retired the old SAS managed tomcat server!
Note from Shannon
I attended a session for parents on Thursday led by Lisa Allred from the SAS Work Life Center about talking to your kids about recent mass shootings, managing their fears and your own anxiety about recent events. You can find a recording of Lisa’s comments here. Thanks to Janet Stone for forwarding the invite - I noticed I was not the only JMP parent on the call.
After the recording, Lisa opened the floor for parents to express their thoughts and feelings about recent events and ask further questions about how best to approach this topic with kids in a low-anxiety, age-appropriate way. She also provided some handouts on talking to your kids with SAS-specific info (<\\d73817\public\Dev Meetings\Talking to Children About School Violence.pdf>) and one that could be shared outside of SAS (<\\d73817\public\Dev Meetings\Community Handout on School Violence.pdf>).
If it feels like this is happening more often than ever, that’s because it is. According to Pew Research, the number of active shooter incidents in the US has risen over the last two decades. Mass shootings only account for 2% of US gun deaths, however. While mass shootings and murders may get the most press coverage, consistently over time, more than half of gun deaths are suicides. I lost a close childhood friend to gun suicide several years ago on the day before Mother’s Day. Perhaps you or someone you know has lost friends and family members in this way.

My brother-in-law serves in the Navy and has shared that gun suicide is a big problem in the military and among veterans. My friend was serving in the border patrol in upstate NY when he died. More US soldiers die of suicide than die in war operations (NPR, 2021) and not surprisingly, suicide rates are higher in the military than in the general population.
This Memorial Day, I remember members of the military who died in wars and conflicts in service of our nation and its ideals. I also remember those who died not in battle but due to other causes after serving our country. This includes my friend, many soldiers and veterans who have suffered injuries and incurable wounds, and my father-in-law Roy who died of lung cancer related to exposure to Agent Orange in Vietnam.
You are free to share your opinions on topics like mass shootings, mental and physical health of active duty military personnel and veterans, suicide prevention and other gun violence in our community by reaching out to your elected government representatives. It only takes a moment to voice text an email, tweet at or call your elected representatives if you have thoughts on their positions on these topics or any others.
Hope you have a relaxing and thoughtful long weekend!
