Using JMP Live for SPC - Customer stories

Question

Has anyone had a customer use JMP Live to monitor their processes using the CC warnings and alerts?  (Or has anyone had a customer ask about using JMP Live for this application?)

I am asking because we have a customer who is currently exploring options for an enterprise SPC tool.  They have 5+ SPC software programs throughout the organization and are looking to standardize.  (The customer is in the very early stages of identifying requirements.)

When I read about SPC software in the marketplace, they use the words "real time monitoring" to describe the capabilities of their software.  I believe we do not advertise JMP Live with these words but since we do have the ability to automate the CC's and provide warnings and alerts, do we see our solution as being one that could be used for continuous process monitoring?

It would also be helpful to understand what the customer expectation is for an "enterprise" spc tool. Does enterprise mean the customer wants more engineers to have access to spc reports for the purpose of analysis and problem solving offline? Alternatively, does enterprise mean spc software that is monitoring real time on the production floor for the purpose of real time on the ground problem solving by machine operators and technicians?

Real time spc systems like WINSPC are very common in production environments. They take data from production measurements and do real time control charting and other simple spc calculations. These systems may also be connected to automation systems like Allen Bradly's DeviceNet and data collected are stored on a database. Imagine an operator measuring the diameter of a machined part before passing the part to the next process. If the operator sees a deviation from spec, they will make a quick adjustment to get it back into spec. A team lead may watch the control chart looking for abnormal patterns and communicate any to an engineer.

An engineer will use databased measurements to dig deeper into the problem. JMP and JMP Live are much better tool for this. I think it would be prohibitively difficult to deploy JMP or JMP live in a real time manufacturing environment. WINSPC is affordable ($1600 per user -one time cost, no annual) and good enough for on the factory floor problem solving. It does not have the analysis capabilities of JMP so companies with JMP licenses are working with both.

Hi Wendy,

you are right we don't advertise JMP Live as real time, but the question is always how real time is real time? I have been on calls where the customer said they needed real time data, but later admitted that every half hour is real time enough for them.  So since they are on the early stages of identifying requirements it might be good to ask them if they truly need real time data.

Then whether it's 16 using the task scheduler or 17 with the embedded scheduler JMP Live could be a good fit for them
