Special Reminder: JMP 17 Sample Data Freeze is coming up quickly on Wednesday, May 18. If you intend to simulate new sample data or create scripts or other samples, please create them and have a tester review them before this date. Thanks!
Welcome to the JMP Development Update for May 6, 2022! If you are working on applying retention labels to your content in preparation for the May 10 deadline, you may find this Confluence page on labeling OneDrive content helpful. Thanks to JMP L10N team member Sandy Jenkins for creating it!
This week we froze for JMP 17 EA8. A few important fixes were selectively integrated after testing on Tuesday and the EA installers for Mac and Win have been rebuilt with those changes. Please make sure your feature pages are up to date with any changes that you want to share with customers.
Thanks very much to Laura Castro-Schilo for presenting on JMP 17 SEM updates at this week’s JMP Dev Meeting! Laura detailed many additions and improvements made to the platform in 17 and mentioned a few features that are unique to JMP and present time-saving advantages over existing SEM tools. If you missed the meeting, you can find a downloaded copy of the recording in this folder.
If you’d like to present at an upcoming dev meeting, please let me know. I have two meetings on the schedule for June 2nd (FDE) and 9th (JMP Live) but I have other dates open in May and June so please let me know if you have something you’d like to share!
Thanks to Anne Milley for sharing some details on JMP’s recent experimentation with sponsoring podcasts:
We arranged for environmental advocate, Alexander Verbeek, to feature WildTrack on his fairly new podcast, The Planet, earlier this week. It was excellent. Zoe was brilliant and there was quite a bit of engagement for the live event, so it even went longer than scheduled. We hit a record for the number of people who listened live, but many more will listen to the podcast on demand. With his two Twitter accounts, Alex has ~450k followers.
Finally, I’m very sorry this week to share the sad news that HTML5 team member Josh Markwordt will be leaving as of May 13th for an opportunity outside SAS. Josh has been with us for nearly a decade since the beginning of the HTML5 project. More recently he has become a valued contributor to JMP Live development. John Powell is working with Josh on transition activities and John plans to open a replacement position soon. Thank you, Josh, for all your contributions during your time with us. I know we all wish Josh the best in his new position but will miss seeing him around the halls!

- Presented Data Acquisition and Data Connectors training with Brian Corcoran and Sara Doudt. Worked with Sara to develop content for external Data Connectors page on jmp.com (also linked from the end-to-end analytic workflow page: jmp.com/workflow).
Key takeaways:
Data access is fundamental. It's the starting point for any analytic journey. That's why JMP makes it easy to access data from a variety of sources.
Broadly, and not perfectly, JMP gets data from three sources:Files, databases and web server-based programming interfaces.
We answer "yes" to many commonly asked questions like: “Do you have a data connector for X?” or "Is there an ODBC driver or API?" or "Can you export a file or Excel file?"
This is a strong focus of product development in the next few releases. We need your help in understanding the need and identifying requests around data connectors/data access.
- Mia: Met with Duane, Peter Hersh and others to discuss reliability requests from NXP. Met with Dan and Peng to discuss various reliability topics and planning for the JMP 18 cycle. Met with Taylor Ferguson and Sara Doudt to plan the next JMP User Platform poll, which will focus on the product. Also met with the User Platform Advisory group to see results of the previous survey on the JMP User Community. Working with Peter Hersh, Don McCormack and others on a tool originally built for STIPS (Data Analysis Director, or DAD) to help novice analysts know which methods to use and when. The impetus is ExxonMobil, which needs a tool like this to help displace Minitab in some locations. Working on videos, feature pages and the Single Source Doc for JMP 18.
- Bryan F: This week I worked on and delivered icons for Work Flow Builder. John Schroedl helped me figure out that icon dpi was controlling the size of icons on buttons. I also worked with Ernest Pasour on some details of the WFB user interface. I conducted a small usability study on some minor JMP user interface changes both internal and external to JMP. John Schroedl helped me with exploring on to make some minor tweaks to the user interface. I did some research on the history of heat maps and corrgrams for JMP-7412. Provided some feedback to Michael Goff on a help message for JMP Live. Had a meeting with Developer Process Workstream to listen to and present ideas for how to change the MSA Design platform.

Note from Shannon
Hope you all stay safe with all the wild weather this afternoon and evening!
I’ve heard the expression “the real McCoy” many times but hadn’t thought too hard about its origins, so I learned something when I clicked on the Google Doodle for Monday celebrating noted inventor Elijah McCoy. His parents escaped slavery in Kentucky via the Underground Railroad in 1837, raising their family in Ontario. Elijah and his siblings attended segregated schools there, and he left for Scotland at the age of 15 to become an apprentice and study as a mechanical engineer at the University of Edinburgh.
Later, he worked by day as a fireman and oilman for Michigan Central Railroad and by night on inventions in his shop at home. He obtained 57 patents during his lifetime, most related to railroad engine lubrication. His inventions reduced maintenance time, allowed trains to run farther and faster than ever before, and became standard issue on trains of the day. You can see this wikipedia article for more details on his diverse ideas and how his patents were used.
