Why don't contingency table and mosaic plot match x and y?<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=UTF-8" />Richard Cheng cheng.r@pg.com Statistics - Cincinnati asks:
Using student scores.jmp if you plot school by gender, here is what you get:

Why is ‘school’ on the vertical axis in the ‘Mosaic plot’ and on the horizontal axis in the ‘Contingency Table’? It seems one of the table is rotated 90 degrees of the other table. There could be a reason, I am just wondering.
Re: Why don't contingency table and mosaic plot match x and y?This is an artifact of statistical tradition.
Contingency tables are traditionally built with the dependent variable as columns of the table, so that's the way JMP lays them out.
Based on the name of the platform and graphing traditions however the Y axis is drawn vertically in the mosaic plot.
You can rotate the Mosaic Plot using the Horizontal option in the hotspot menu.
