Welcome to the JMP Development Update for March 18, 2022!
We are nearing release of JMP 17 EA7, likely early next week. Please update your feature pages and check the boxes in the Feature Readiness Checklist section at the end. This is very helpful to both development and product management when trying to assess status of features.
SAS has announced that they will retire Defects during the third weekend outage this May. The update and browse clients as well as the database will be shut down. After defects retires, you will be able to use the Inside SAS search to search text pages for specific defects. You can find all the details here in Confluence. FYI that a table containing the main fields and full text of all JMP defects can be found in Perforce here: //depot/main/test/Utilities/DefectsDashboard/All JMP defects.jmp
Thanks very much to Peng Liu for presenting at yesterday’s JMP Dev meeting. Peng’s demo of the new Repeated Measures Degradation platform generated a lot of interest from other JMP team members and a very active chat session! If you missed the presentation, you can find the recording here. We have a few demos coming up on the schedule, but please do let me know if you’d be interested in presenting and we can look at open dates.
Thanks to Tonya Mauldin for sharing the details of this week’s Beta/Crash/Telemetry Tracks with crashes selected. The JMP Live report is here: Beta/Crash/Telemetry Tracks for the week of 3/18/2022 | JMP Live (sas.com).

Product Management
- Dan V: Had some fun on the community with this data challenge. Byron and Brady put together some nice solutions and we are seeing how it scales. Planning on engaging with the JMP community to work together the end-to-end workflow of a data problem I am working on, building a script to process new data as it comes in, correctly identify signal and noise, clean up sensor data issues and fit models to look at performance changes over time.
- Bryan F: Provided feedback and created some mockups for the Design Space tool. Coordinated with Joseph Morgan and Chris Humphrey on delivering Easy Doe icons. Requested feedback for a question asked about the Model Screening platform on the JMP User Community and received help from Clay Barker and John Sall.
- UX Workstreams:
- Presentation Layer: Team members presented ideas for changes to JMP’s style. I presented a prototype showing how a tabbed view could always be an option and for closely linking reports with the originating data table. Also, suggested simpler and less colorful icons.
- Developer Process: Conducted a usability test on MSA Design with Kevin Potcner (thanks!) and showed the video to the team. I intend to collect pain points from the usability study next.
- Functional UX: Met with Kevin Potcner and Susan Conaghan for a design charrette for the bivariate platform.
- Mia: In preparation for the release of EA7, compiled information from feature pages, produced several EA videos, and updated the JMP 17 Single Source Document. Our EA members should have access to EA7 early next week.
Technical Support
- Wendy: Along with the daily support of JMP customers, Technical Support continues to work closely with NeuraFlash providing feedback and reporting bugs for the upcoming Service Cloud implementation.
- Here are the TS JMP Live reports. (JMP Live 16) Here is information regarding Jira tickets opened by Tech Support.
Development Operations
- Bob: Along with Sam Gardner, met with SAS R&D and SAS Pricing/Packaging to begin discussion on get the new JMP Clinical into the SAS release processes. Met with Rachel and Carol to discuss naming issues and steps with new JMP Clinical. Worked with Daniel Powell on the new system to handle updater download processing.
- Jim: Branched and built JMP Pro 17 EA#7. Many thanks to Michael Hecht for resolving source code and notarization issues! Reported multiple LEAKS and ASSERT issues. Worked with Drew to isolate a crash on launch of JMP Clinical on mac OS. Perforce support.
- Myron: Working on the Salesforce API to migrate the crash system away from Sirius. Minor unit test processing changes to pick up results changes (JMPTOOL-195). Working on the automatic sample data processing.
Localization
- Angelita: Investigated issue with KO Builtins kit, processed return of Korean 16.1 Multivariate Methods book, and updated JMP Live translation process documentation.
- Mel: Validation of JMP Live Jenkins jobs.
- Howard: Updates to JMP Live Jenkins jobs; continues to research Scanbot improvements.
- Trish: Processed invoices, reviewed confluence documentation, and triaged JMP Live bugs in preparation for handoff of strings to localization next month.
Documentation
System/Host Testing-Cary
- All: EA7 Testing
- Nick: Working with Evan to put together unit tests for JMP Search. This will involve creating some new matchers to check search results for baseline queries over time. I will also try to add some performance tests. Tracked down a number of new unit test failures caused by a change Dan S. made last week - they seem to have been corrected now. Starting work on a video to show how testers can access display boxes within report tress more easily in JMP 17 following a new hint system introduced by Evan earlier in the 17 cycle. Continuing to make progress in getting all my unit tests to run clean and keeping up verifications.
- Mandy: Continued Workflow Builder testing with Ernest. We still need to fix Virtual Join columns rerunning from WFB (JMP-10768). Adding test cases for new ID column for stack groups that Clinical needed for Tabulate. Added the packed column selection filter for the rows, so will add test case there (per Drew, JMP-10892). Worked on Mac crash with Michael H. that no one could see but me, and that has been fixed now.
- Hunter: JMP 17 EA 7 validation, sent several test cases for JMP Search window Sikuli tests to Mike M. (Thank you, Mike!), defect verification, reviewed the help tooltips and menu options document, and worked on recreating one JMP 17 EA 6 track.
- Audrey: EA7 Testing, thinking about Workday goals and the “mission” of our test groups, tweaking the view-only list of components, investigating a few issues in JMP Live.
- Lisa: Worked on testing EA7, verifying some hover label editor crashes, and looking at JSL for textseg customization.
- Josh L: JMP 17 EA testing, JMP Live story / bug verification. Reviewing high priority Jira bugs and moving them.

Data Discovery
- Dave B: Fixed mosaic seg hover label not updating correctly when rows hidden/shown, fixed table box problem with editing and padding, and fixed a mac only problem with the filter/select where dialog not dismissing correctly.
- Dan S: Action recording in data filter, additional fixes for move-to-project, data filter updates to fix problems working with transform columns, and fix for open/close in Ishikawa diagram.
- Xan: Made an EA video for GB tabular data. Fixed bugs related to Multiple Response and C++ undefined behavior.
DOE
- Joseph: Worked on Easy DOE main effects plots (i.e. Data Entry tab) and on the Profiler (i.e. Predict tab). Also, more work on state transition issues as well as layout, sizing, and spacing issues.
Host
- Paul N: Received legal approval to enable DES encryption code to decrypt Illumina IDAT v1 file format data files. Enabled the code in JMP to support IDAT files and did some code cleanup. Black Duck scanning on JMP 17. Revisiting Open Street Map server. Researching the configuration for MapProxy, which is a sever layer to present a wms server interface that JMP is expecting, rather than just the tiles being served from an OpenStreetMap tile server. Now I have a running OpenStreetMap server in a virtual machine running the MapProxy demo softwre that can serve map tiles of a limited area of the world. What’s left to do is connecting the two so map proxy serves data from OUR map server, and then does it in a way that’s compatible with what JMP 16 and earlier is expecting.
- John Schroedl: Fixes for menus in high contrast mode. Fixed Alt-click on red triangle dismissing the popup early. Registered .jmpflow files with Explorer. Investigate issue possibly related to Blue Cielo document management s/w. Updated crash and help dev servers with latest security patches.
- Daniel Powell: Bob Hickey and I are working on rewriting the legacy JMP Update system in AWS. The database, Lambda, API and UI layers have been put in place successfully and now we are running through DEV testing/validation!
HTML5
- John Powell: Render Markers with Hide Missing Color or Size static (JMPHTML-152). Met with new developer Paul Spychala and helping him get started. Investigating Marker colors lost when size and color role applied JMPHTML-757. Preparing for Manager Essentials course. Answered questions on the JMP User Community about getting static images in interactive HTML:
- Paul S: Attended SAS New Employee Orientation and completed various onboarding tasks. Took a tour of the facilities, met a bunch of the JMP employees in person and over teams, and installed JMP and now learning all things JMP,
JMP Live
- Aurora: Dropped obsolete second way to bulk-delete packages. Re-enabling deletion of non-empty hierarchical folders. This will delete what can be deleted and leave the rest behind. Still working on this. UX Workstream: started "mashup" proposal for Fit Y by X platform (working with Mia on this).
- Aaron: Working on error handling for JMP Live publish - basically brainstorming every possible thing that could possibly go wrong at any step of the publish process, and making sure we detect that situation, get an error back to the main publish code, and display a (hopefully) helpful message to the user.
- Josh M: WEBJMP-4561: Make data table column sidebar have filtering.
Statistics
- John Sall: Many Design Space Profiler improvements in response to Heath Rushing and Bryan Fricke. Design Space now connects with the Simulator, many more things are editable, and labeling is much improved. One new feature of special note is help text that appears initially, then disappears when you start changing things. See "Late-Stage Features" here in Confluence.
- Laura C-S: Fixed a few bugs involving fit indices and standardized parameters with the new SEM code. Investigating cause of larger log likelihoods in some SEM examples. Collaborating on a manuscript with a couple professors using longitudinal SEM. Learned that a quant psych PhD student from Vanderbilt U. will be joining us (remotely) this summer for an internship working on SEM projects (yay)!
- Peng: Prepared for JMP Dev presentation.
Stat Documentation
- Michael C: Made updates to the Scripting Index for Oneway and Contingency platforms; reviewed tracked edits in Oneway and DOE documentation for Karen; worked with stat developers to get simulated data tables added to sample data in JMP 17.
