Welcome to the JMP Development update for March 11, 2022!
Special reminder from Susan Conaghan: For those asked to review the Help menu tooltips, please provide feedback by Tuesday, March 15. You can find the review document here: \\jmpsrv01\source\doc\Bookmaster\v17\Menu_tooltips (Updated_Help_menu_March_2022_review.pdf).
We are now officially frozen for JMP 17 EA7. Thanks to everyone for working to finalize features and bug fixes prior to the freeze! Installers will be built and vetted starting early next week. If you have news to share about features or important fixes, please update the Motivation and Summary section of your features pages. While you are reviewing the page, please check boxes for important items on the Feature Readiness section at the end of the page.
All of JMP will be celebrating Pi Day on Monday 3/14/22 with a day off. This is supposed to be a day to rest, relax and recharge, so I hope you will all enjoy it! Hopefully you had a chance to attend Discovery sessions this week, watch the plenaries and talk to some customers! If you have notes you’d like to share with the group, you can add them here in Confluence.
This past Tuesday was International Women’s Day. I very much enjoyed Hannah Fry’s data stories talk at Discovery that day. Thanks also to Diana, Arati and others for coordinating a JMP Discovery affinity group for women on that day. Thanks to Lisa Grossman for sharing this link to a Twitter account that connects International Women’s Day and data! It was created to highlight median pay inequality as tracked at UK companies with >250 employees. The pay gap is a major issue that impacts working women and their families across the world, but it’s rare to see that data made public and even available for searching. When companies tweeted support for “breaking the bias” with the hashtag #IWD2022, a bot would retweet that company or organization’s median hourly pay gender gap. Scrolling through that feed was illuminating. Some organizations have close to or equal median pay for women and men, including some tech companies. However, there were some notable exceptions…

Thanks to Tonya Mauldin for sharing this week’s details of Beta/Crash/Telemetry tracks with crashes selected.

Product Management
- Dan V:
- Wrote a couple of articles on LinkedIn. The first is summarizing the Bright Minds Mingle: Driving Analytic Excellence in your Organization session at Discovery Europe. One about putting together a real background for virtual meetings and a one on my background and career journey.
- Attended Discovery Europe presentations and meet the experts. Meeting about pricing and packaging updates/changes for 2022, 2023 and beyond with members of legal, finance and bus ops. Prepping for upcoming Unilever presentation on building a culture of analytics. Organized the JMP Live customers page with Dieter and Sara, pulling information from GIDB and adding in information from sales teams about the status and challenges of all of our current JMP Live customers. Met about changes to the JMP Academic Suite Offering. Micron quarterly engagement meeting to discuss JMP Live roll-out plan. Prep for upcoming JMP Live training with Sara and Dieter.
- Bryan F:
- UX Workstreams:
- Presentation Layer: Team members are working on initial design ideas for JMP styling and layout. I also showed a YouTube video that demonstrated Tableau.
- Developer Process: A couple of code changes have been made based on a usability test with Nicole Jones for MSA design. I plan to run more usability tests soon so we have some feedback to use when experimenting with a development process that incorporates design thinking.
- Functional UX: Created a mashup of ideas to create an HTML5 tab based, horizontal layout of the bivariate report. Created an Adobe XD based prototype of a confidence curve graph that can expand into a confidence curve graph. Based on design ideas provided by Aurora, Kevin, Ledi, Mark, and me; we have broken up into pairs that will brainstorm to further enhance design ideas. This type of group ideation has been termed a design charrette.
- Consistency: Susan Conaghan organized a meeting around getting better consistency in terminology across the product. We intend to employ design thinking to develop a strategy for solving the consistency issue.
- Updated a few source files with guidance from John Schroedl (thanks, John) so that the new Easy DOE icons show up in JMP.
- Coordinating with Russ Wolfinger on a JMP Community question related to the Model Screening platform.
- Presented Comparing Predictive Model Performance with Confidence Curves (2022-EU-45MP-1039) with Russ Wolfinger (thank you, Russ!). We got some good feedback in the session.
- Conversation with Dan, David, Drew, and Laura about discoverability of tab layout configuration options.
Technical Support
- Bobby: Thanks so much to Hunter Weaver for helping investigate a projects crash reported by SE Mike Anderson, narrow down the case, and enter a Jira issue. Bobby noted that Hunter is always such a reliable contact for Tech Support and he very much appreciates being able to contact him when needed.
Development Operations
- Jim: Verified fixed Jira LEAKS, ASAN and assertions failures and reported new ones. Preparing for JMP 17 EA #7; met with Sam, Wenjun, Anisa and Drew regarding Clinical EA updates/timeline.
- Myron: Started working on Salesforce API to replace Sirius. Moved Mac crash symbolize job to a different machine and closed out several crash-related JIRAs (split stack search, attachments, etc.). Server-related maintenance tasks (deleting/moving unneeded files to maintain free space on jmptran, jmptool, etc.).
Localization
- Angelita: Portable UI & Builtin Kits for Handoff 1 created and delivered to translation teams.
- Mel/Trish: Validation of Portable UI and Builtin Kits.
- Howard: Research on Scanbot Improvements.
- Trish: Worked with Michael and Qiana to standardize documentation & localization Jira components for use in the JMP and WebJMP Jira projects. JMPDoc and JMPLOC Jira projects are now only used for project/process management.
- Trish: Work Orders and Purchase Orders created for JA, DE, IT, ES, FR, KO V17 software localization.
Documentation
- Susan C: Ran production checks on all the books, generated and published EA7 help. Verified that help with the build yesterday. Met with the Functional UX consistency team to discuss a style guide and term bank. Implemented more feedback on the Help tooltips and menu updates and resent the proposed changes for review. Updating the Student Subscription doc. Met with Chris to address any initial questions.
System/Host Testing-Cary
- Mandy: Russ made a change to Tabulate to have a unique ID column (JMP-10778) so I created an Xcode build to test the feature and fixes on Mac. Dan S. made a test build for windows – to run Tabulate tests. Testing Workflow builder fixes and adding JSL tests. This week, built updates with Xcode on the Mac and found a crash and a few asserts that developer fixed. Tracked down a random crash (JMP-10597) on the Mac with Xcode with an odd swipe of 2 fingers in the Tables > preview area with Tables > Stack. Attended Discovery and did Meet the Experts on Thursday and had 4 folks come in our room with issues, mostly resolved. Working on verifying fixes, doing Debug Xcode build today to make sure some asserts are gone on Mac.
- Nick: Cleaning up some failing unit tests, most notably ones in the C ++ unit test framework, which thanks to Chris Gotwalt are running cleanly. With these fixes along with some others in the JSL framework, failure numbers are down significantly. I will be making a real push in the coming weeks to get them completely clean. Tested and added tests for changes Dan S made to OutlineBox and TabBox messages to make behavior more consistent for scripts that are run when box titles are changed programmatically. Met with Evan to discuss unit tests being set up for JMP Search – hope to get a good start on that next week and perhaps add some performance tests as well.
- Hui: Continued testing and bug verification on Treemap. Met with Steve Chen and went through his Server Automation Setup. Thanks Steve for the help. Familiarized myself with Visual Studio Code and other software tools. Communicated with employee help desk on laptop updating issues. Submitted a poster draft for US JMP discovery conference 2022.
- Audrey: Looked into SPSS crash (already fixed, thanks Brian!). Set up a simple link to our JMP components, see Component Owners List - this will update itself at least daily.
- Lisa: Tested the vertical/horizontal alignment for text customization in graph builder, verifying 17.0 tickets, and closing hover label tracks involving the Extract method that has been removed (thanks for triaging those!).
- Hunter: More JMPTOOL-342 crash handling verification, investigated projects crash publishing to JMP Public (JMP-11536) and reported issue connecting to JMP Public (WEBJMP-4841), and defect verification.

Data Discovery
- Dave B: Character columns are now included in the filter and select where dialog for table boxes. Character comparisons can be case sensitive or insensitive and the operators supported are ==, not equal, contains, starts with and ends with. Feedback on the operator list and suggestions for operators to add is welcome. The dialog now does some simple validation when ok is clicked. User choices are now persisted to initialize the dialog when it is brought up. Fixed a performance problem with filtering a sorted table box. Created test case for an anonymous crash sent in with a script that was clearing the log.
- Dan S: Fixed crash in Hover Labels after columns are deleted. More work to make Lock Title and JSL title callbacks work the same for tabs and outline. Fixed problem where JSL ref to Graph Builder goes stale after Start Over / Dialog. Fixed some problems moving scripts and other windows to a Project.
- Xan: Discovery conference and (mostly) fruitless axis work.
DOE
- Brad: Participated in the Stu Hunter Conference as a member of the program committee. Thanks to John Sall, who gave a great discussion of a plenary talk!

Host
- Paul Nelson: JMP Discovery – meet the experts. Worked with JMP & SAS lawyers and JIRA team as to why our request for DES caused the JIRA automation for 3rd-Party library and Export compliance to get stuck. Looks to be just about resolved with all sub-tasks now approved and a minor amount of work remaining. Final approval for DES so we can read IDAT v1 files should be soon. Build and update to new version of libCurl 7.82.0. from 5 Mar 2022, - fixes vulnerability in 7.80.0 that BlackDuck reported. BlackDuck flagged Log4j 2.17.0 with a medium vulnerability, 2.17.2 is now the most current. Updated blackduck scripts and p4 workspace to drop 9.3 jars from scan.

Started working on the bug Hierarchical Clustering Criterion Table header columns incorrect. Attended the JMP Live Meet the experts event, Aurora gave an excellent demo of JMP Live features. Justin, Michael. Chris and Aaron helped explain the features.
JMP Live
- Aurora: Improved performance of publish and saved some completion details in the database for easy lookup by JMP Live client. Do not allow a user who could not download a data table to view a preview of that data on JMP Live. Allow moving folders around anywhere within any folder hierarchy within a space (but do not allow movement between spaces). Participated in "Meet the Experts" for Discovery Europe.
- Josh M: Created a dialog to display column properties (WEBJMP-3665) with initial support to display the dialog and a small subset of properties we decided we wanted to display in JMP 17.
- Michael G: Lots of publish on client improvements. Match JMP dark mode and language. Improved the success page. Capturing more errors. Completed data options for publish and replace. Added a way to copy package ID to clipboard. Various bug fixes.

Note from Shannon
Thanks to Xan Gregg for passing along this local trivia!
Chapel Hill has roads named for statisticians. Since they meet in a T intersection, I wonder if the area is called Hotelling's T square?
