What content would serve as a useful resource to better use JMP?Let's use this thread to discuss/document ideas on what content is needed to help users in their JMP journey. Please include an example post if relevant.
Re: What content would serve as a useful resource to better use JMP?I tried it just now. It needs to sort the answers better and access the community answers. Group the near-duplicate answers to shorten the list.
I like the icons. There should be a community icon.

Re: What content would serve as a useful resource to better use JMP?Has anyone used a JMP 17 EA release? If so, have you used the JMP Search functionality (Help > JMP Search)?
Re: What content would serve as a useful resource to better use JMP?I know this is derailing the conversation a bit, but below are instructions I started sending with our licenses to allow a person without admin privileges to load their own license:
In some cases, you will be asked to open a license file every time you open JMP. The following steps should resolve this:
- Save the attached file in a location where you can leave it for the next year, for example in Documents/JMP License.
- Select the license when JMP opens
- Go to File > Preferences
- On the left, select File Locations
- On the top right, select License File Path
- Select Browse
- Pick the file
- Leave the admin name and organization blank
- Select OK when told the license has been accepted.
- Close and re-open JMP
- You will likely get a message that the license file is not valid and be asked whether you want to try a different license file. Select Yes.
- Choose Open license and pick the same file you saved earlier
- Again leave admin name and organization blank and select OK.
- Now JMP should open without asking to re-select your license.
Re: What content would serve as a useful resource to better use JMP?Yes, it would be nice to have an ombudsman that could find great solutions to issues around help, user interface, error messages, maybe other things that are not exactly C++ code. It's a really hard job, thinking outside of the box. Producing better error messages, fixing a GUI, and better help might all be approaches to solving a problem. Finding the most cost-effective (from many points of view) solution...not always obvious. @Jeff_Perkinson has been that person for a long time; there are several other people with more specialized niches as well. I try not to flood them, and generally use an out-of-band email so the rest of the community doesn't think they are a personal consulting service...
So yes, a red triangle (super user) option for the ombudsman might be useful: "please look at this thread."
(Or should it just be visible to everyone?)
Recent example for me was the two different users having a hard time with their license file; I emailed a suggestion to the person I think can make it work better. Not help, not gui, just needs a timely dialog explaining why the license won't stick unless you are in admin mode... I think it is helpful to be able to propose solution(s) to a problem too, not just tell Jeff to read the thread.
It is also really helpful (to me) to get feedback that I've been heard. (I usually do, thanks!)
Re: What content would serve as a useful resource to better use JMP?Linking between different help sources could be neat. In platforms and the scripting index there are links to help (which is great!), what about adding links from help to relevant pages in the documentation library, and useful posts in the community? Yes, in theory you could just take relevant info and put it in help, but sometimes it is helpful to see something explained multiple ways.
I do still think having some way for super users to easily tag a post for review by someone at JMP that can update the help files would be beneficial.
Re: What content would serve as a useful resource to better use JMP?Continuing to my previous list
- Ability to reference / quote Scripting Index directly in community in such a way that the data would be embedded, not just hyperlink
- Also this could in best case provide "link" which would open the link in JMP Scripting Index on the users computer
- Ability to reference JMP Help pages directly in community in such a way that the data would be embedded, not just hyperlink
Re: What content would serve as a useful resource to better use JMP?I should try the site tag in google search more often!

Re: What content would serve as a useful resource to better use JMP?For general JMP usage:
- Easier linking to Scripting Index and JMP Help would also help. For example with the @ tag . It would also be nice to directly link to a specific message in already existing post, currently I think it is only possible to refer to opening post when using @.
- Anything which would help users to find information is always useful, but too bad that can't solve the issue in which people do not look for information and just directly ask it in community.
- Some type of categorization/grouping/tags/... could maybe help with this.
- Some sort of show and tell section (blog posts cover this partially)
- Even I could write something like this as I use JMP/JSL almost exclusively currently at work to solve many problems and automate processes. I would just have to get approval from my supervisor / parent company that I could share what we do on high-level and use my work time on it, so in the end it should provide some value to the parent company also.
- I have also shared the quite lengthy post (which I did never post
), about posting to community. Idea was to update the Getting fast helpful answers to your questions. I have attached the file as .pdf (it was originally written as .MD). The links seem to be broken but it should have the general idea I had.
More related to scripting:
- Besides the Python and R @Craige_Hales mentioned there is also excel which should be covered somehow
- Also it could be nice to have an article which could give examples how jsl scripting skills might translate to other languages or how it could be combined with other languages. Even I'm struggling a little with this as I write so much JSL (even on my free-time, I could just use my time and write Python instead) and it really isn't that sought out skill in Finland (at least to my knowledge...), but I do understand that it will somewhat translate over to for example pandas and numpy even if the syntax is completely different.
- Improved Scripting Index
- Improved Script Editor
- Improved File Exchange section in community
- Currently it is a hassle to share and update add-ins and I much prefer using GitHub and maybe post them to community or then not.
Re: What content would serve as a useful resource to better use JMP?C++ Programmer's Guide to JSL Was my attempt. Something similar for python would extend the idea beyond syntax and talk about semantics of pandas vs data tables. R was mentioned too.
(On my phone, can't make the @mention work at all, feel free to fix my link!)edit: fixed with a proper browser
