Remove Multi-Response Formatting definition from SPSS ImportFrequently, users need to import an SPSS (.sav) file. If that file contains a multi-response (MR) variable, it may lose information. Specifically, if one or more of the response categories were never selected in the data, then JMP will not retain that information. It will be as if the response category never existed. Wish List request: remove any .sav file MR definitions before importing to JMP -- this will bring them in a separate binary variables. Alternatively, bring the MR variable in such that it still "exists" (shows 0% incidence and results in its own binary variable if using "make indicator columns".

Re: Remove Multi-Response Formatting definition from SPSS Import - Status changed to: DeliveredSorry for the late notice on this. We have implemented changes in JMP 17 that should allow you to address your second proposed solution. Let me know if you do not feel your wish has been fulfilled and I can reopen.
Re: Remove Multi-Response Formatting definition from SPSS ImportHi Sarah,
Thank you for the note; however, I am not able to find the changes in either of my versions (17.1 and EA9). Could you point me in the right direction? I am trying to bring in a multi-response variable ("mycolors") from SPSS where one of the categories ("blue") has all zeros. If I try to run a distribution on mycolors, blue does not appear. Likewise, if I try to use Cols>Utilities>Make Indicator Columns, a "blue" variable is not created.
Thanks for your help,
David
Re: Remove Multi-Response Formatting definition from SPSS ImportSorry David, I forgot to elaborate! A new feature in 17 puts all possible MR responses in a text field for the column. The list of variables is concatenated and in the column notes. I know this is not how you suggested this feature be implemented, so please let me know if this does not fulfill your request, or if you have any further questions on the feature. Thank you!
Re: Remove Multi-Response Formatting definition from SPSS ImportHi Sarah,
Thanks for your response, and sorry for my delay. This is an improvement. Ideally, you could implement a solution so that the SPSS-imported MR variable looks just like a JMP-created MR variable. Specifically, when using Cols>Utilities>Combine Columns [Selected Columns are indicator columns + MR checked], it creates a MR variable with value labels from a set of binary variables. The value labels include responses that are not in the data. Is it possible to create a value labels column property for SPSS-imported MR variables too (that includes all responses)? That way, when the user summarizes the MR variable in the Categorical platform, it will show all the responses (provided they turn on Category Options > Include responses not in data). If so, it would make sense to have them turn on this preference by default.
The other option would be to delete the MR set definition during SPSS file import so that all responses are represented as a binary variables.
Thoughts? Thanks!

Re: Remove Multi-Response Formatting definition from SPSS ImportHi, thank you for the feedback! I have passed that on to the developer.
I also want to make sure you are aware that there is already a preference to suppress Multiple Response handling and to force all the responses out as binary columns. This has to be done through JSL, but will persist between JMP sessions. It is specified by: pref(SPSS Enable Multiple Response(0));
