Just announced: JMP’s own Bradley Jones won two 2021 awards from the American Society for Quality. “The awards recognize individuals for superior achievements in the development, promotion, and communication of quality information and technology. Awards and medals are named after people who have made outstanding achievements in the field of quality,” states ASQ.
The 2021 Shewhart Medal, named after Walter Andrew Shewhart, went to Jones “for fundamental research in the design of industrial experiments, providing experimental design capabilities to hundreds of thousands of users, and for editorial service to technical journals sponsored by ASQ.”
“I am honored by the Shewhart Medal,” said Jones. “I deeply respect those statistical giants who preceded me in getting this award.” You may recognize some of the previous Shewhart Medal winners. Here are a few of the most recognizable names...

Jones also received the 2021 Brumbaugh Award which goes to the paper making the largest single contribution to the development of industrial application of quality control. Specifically, Jones’ award said, “for co-authoring, A-optimal versus D-optimal design of screening experiments, Journal of Quality Technology, 53:4, 369-382.”
“The Brumbaugh award was a complete surprise,” said Jones. “I did not know that the paper was under consideration. The other co-authors were Peter Goos and Katherine Allen who was an intern at JMP while she was getting her Ph.D. at NC State.”
Jones won the Brumbaugh Award in 2009 and 2012, both times for his work with Christopher Nachtsheim. This award dates back to 1949 and is named after the founder and first editor of “Industrial Quality Control.”
Janet R. Raddatz, the 2021 ASQ Chair, says she looks forward to presenting the medal to Jones in May at ASQ’s World Conference on Quality and Improvement in Anaheim, California.
