Welcome to the JMP Development Update for January 28, 2022!
JMP QA teams have now signed off on JMP 17 EA6 installers for JMP Pro and JMP Clinical. Installers were rebuilt earlier in the week to include a few critical fixes. Thanks to everyone for the quick work testing the fixes and the installers!
With EA6, JMP Clinical 17 kicks off the very first alpha testing phase for a JMP Clinical release, and will offer customers a chance to test selected reports on Windows. (The team plans to release JMP Clinical 17 EA7 on both Mac and Win.) The Life Sciences testing team (Anisa Scott, Susan Shao and Wenjun Bao) has been busy testing reports, comparing result numbers with previous versions and validating the installers. They will be helping triage feedback from EA customers as the team works to add support for additional features throughout the rest of the 17 cycle.
A number of people on the JMP development team have been working on defect triage and cleanup recently. Thanks for all your help retrying test cases, adding details, reprioritizing items, and closing out defunct issues! Here’s a helpful reminder of the process for developers to follow when a fix is pushed for a Jira issue:
- Mark the item Test-Ready by clicking that button
- Click the Edit button, which allows you to do these three steps in one:
- Change Assignee to the appropriate tester
- Change Fix Version/s to 17.0
- Indicate the Perforce push details in a comment
A tester will verify the change and either mark the item Accepted and Closed/Fixed, or indicate if the fix needs further work by changing Fix Version/s back to 17.0:OPEN, changing the item back to DEV-READY, and adding an explanatory comment.
Speaking of testing, JMP localization team manager Trish O’Grady has posted a new position this week for a localization tester to join her team. You can use this link to the Employee Referral Portal to invite a referral to apply. Or, if you’d like to share this on LinkedIn, please use this external link or share with internal candidates using this internal link, which provides more details about the job and its responsibilities.
Thanks to Tonya Mauldin for sharing the details of this week’s Beta/Crash/Telemetry tracks with crashes selected. JMP Live report is here: Beta/Crash/Telemetry Tracks for the week of 1/28/2022 | JMP Live (sas.com).

JMP Development Updates
Data Discovery
- Xan: Making progress on "tabular data in Graph Builder" issue, a top priority from PM.

- Dave B: Plot col now supports non-linear scales and has a new jsl command “Set Axis” that allows much richer customizations to be made, fixed redo problems with custom axis names in 3d graphs, fixed plotcol journal problems, fixed table losing sort order when a column is given a new list with a different number of elements.
- Dan S: Added "Invisible" option to NewWindow(), prototyping a report feature similar to "private" data tables for low-overhead scripting, optimized TableBox measuring for tables with many columns, investigating platform launch with filters to see if we can avoid running the platform twice (first without filter, and then with).
- Evan: Working on showing search results for other editions of JMP (like Pro when running Standard, or Standard/Pro when running Trial).
DOE
- Caleb: Finished writing new explorers for the remaining legacy power calculations. Starting in tonight’s build, you should now be able to run One and Two Sample Power for Counts Per Unit, One and Two Sample Intervals for Counts Per Unit, Reliability Life Testing, and Sigma Quality Level from the Sample Size Explorer menus.
- Joseph: Added support for .jmpdoe Easy DOE file type to allow for saving and reconstituting Easy DOE objects. Also, worked on refining Guided Analyze and Predict tab functionality.
- Brad: Submitted paper on mixed level screening designs to the Journal of Quality Technology.
Host
- Paul: Worked with Eric on securely storing database credentials in JMP Live. Worked with Daniel on activation, tracking down potential issues with the data feed for Antoine’s script accessing the activation server. Continued looking at map server, and still working on getting it callable by JMP. Helping to chase down an issue Mandy reported on home window.
HTML5
- Praveena: Worked on adding tickOffset to axes JMPHTML-820 , analyzed the issue for resizing canvas in jmplive JMPHTML-1329 . Attended JMP Academy meetings, met with my new teammates for the work on second assignment.
- Mayowa: Fixed issues with parallel plot row labels not showing after exporting to HTML directly from a JSL script (JMPHTML-1326), continued working on fixing bug with inaccurate click selection of categorical parallel sections in parallel plots (JMPHTML-1477).
- John Powell: Finished Year End Wrap up conversations. Interviewed a candidate for the HTML5 Software Developer position. Reassigned Bryan Fricke’s Jira components and items to HTML5 team members. Implemented support for PlotCol font size customization when drawn on canvas (JMPHTML-1405). Investigated issue with marker size calculations for negative size values with Xan’s help (JMPHTML-1482). Made the toolbar opaque in Dark Theme (JMPHTML-951). Adjusted map inset code to handle new Compact Map Mode (JMPHTML-891). Investigating an issue with multiple map boundaries when Compact Map Mode is enabled (JMPHTML-1483). Tried out Xan’s new Axis Table Caption Box Location (JMP-1797) - will require effort to get it to work in Interactive HTML. Jira Backlog grooming/refinement.
JMP Live
- Aurora: Finished the "publish on client" scenario of replacing a JMP Live report and updating an existing JMP Live data table along the way. Moving existing Jest tests for publish and replace from the old way to the new "publish on client" way.
Statistics
- Laura L: Made an initial push of changes for reorganizing the Variability Chart to work better with multiple responses and to make the functionality between it and the EMP Measurement Systems Analysis platform more consistent.
- Annie: Fixed several Jira issues this week:
- JMP-10431: Three way chart dialog unable to give individual on group std devs with median moving range
- JMP-10457: Individual on Group Std Dev chart should not have within identifier on the Y axis
- JMP-7708: Switch to IMR button does not work properly after removing a graph and certain frames
- JMP-6572: S1573507: Test failures should be saved to the summary table (Cusum)
- Jianfeng: Pushed several improvements to equivalence tests based on EA feedback (JMP-10197) from Yusuke Ono and EA users.
- Laura C-S: Continued working on multiple-group analysis (MGA). I found a bug in the MGA standard errors of standardized estimates and fixed it.
Stat Documentation
- Michael C: Worked with Karen to get the rewritten Bivariate chapter out for technical review; helped Qiana with EA production steps; completed HR training module on best practices for interviews.
Stat Testing
- Tonya: Testing the 3 Way chart dialog in CCB and Laura’s recent changes with Variability Chart and MSA.
- Nicole: Working on EA feedback, cleaned up unit tests, and met as part of the UI/UX workstream.
- Mark: Developing unit tests for Data Entry step in Easy DOE using covering arrays. Answering some feedback from Early Adopters. Answering questions in JMP Community.
Product Management
- Dieter: Helped CEA Grenoble to get their JMP Live site up and running, tried to replicate an installation issue Gore is running into and help Regeneron to set up OKTA authentication.
- Bryan F: Processed 2021 Academic Survey Results (thanks, Kevin Poctner!) and created an affinity diagram in order to identify usability issues. I shared these results with the UX Workstream.

- Created questionnaires for the UX workstream to identify usability concerns with JMP styling and functionality. The Workstream is using dot voting to identify areas of greatest concern.
- Presented a set of minimum goals for the UX workstream and conducted a pre-mortem to identify areas of risk. I again created an affinity diagram with this input where I used virtual stickies to simulate the experience of working with physical objects to coalesce similar items together. The Workstream used dot voting to identify the greatest risks. Next week I plan to have a mitigation strategy formed.
- Had several individual conversations in order to gain insight into how we can improve JMP UX on all fronts. I welcome these sorts of conversations in order to leverage a diversity of perspectives on UX withing JMP. Fielded various usability questions both within Confluence and Teams.
- Met with the Product Management team for Q1 meeting.
- Met with Qiana (thanks for setting up the meeting!), Landra, Amy, and Nicole about beginning a JMP Standards Guide. Great meeting and look forward to the cross-functional work!
