On January 27 we offered our first Statistically Speaking event of the year, Exploring the Cosmos Near and Far. Plenary talks were delivered by Astrophysicists Katie Mack and JJ Hermes who gave us some good reasons to look to look up…to the skies. With new, powerful telescopes giving us a look into deep space and marvel at the expanse of the cosmos. Professor JJ Hermes shared his latest research about the search for planets around white dwarf stars; Professor Katie Mack followed with theories of the end of our universe – as she outlines in her best-selling book, The End of Everything: (Astrophysically Speaking)
With more than 3,000 registrations for the event, our Sales teams will be reaching out to advance conversations on the benefits for analytics for their organizations and how JMP can help them in those endeavors. To help with those conversations, we’re recommending the following assets.
Given the topics covered in the talk, it might be best to highlight JMP’s ability to make breakthrough discoveries and to embrace data-driven decision making.
If you have any questions, please reach out to me.
Thanks

The following assets should help start or advance conversations in these areas.
The End of Everything (Astrophysically Speaking), Book Chapter
Our main call to action for this event, this is the first chapter in her new book. In this excerpt (Chapter 1: Introduction to the Cosmos) Mack introduces “eschatology," the study of the end of everything. She focuses on the five most likely scenarios, introducing questions and answers that can be answered with scientific observation, mathematics, and physical evidence. It’s an entertaining, expansive look at how the universe meets its demise.
Using Data to Align with Your Life Purpose, Analytically Speaking
In this Analytically Speaking on-demand webinar Vic Strecher talks about the studies that led to his understanding of life purpose, and how data is helping others understand their own. He’ll cover designing an experiment to study how the affirmation of core values can help change behavior, the benefits of approaching learning with a greater purpose in mind, what happens to your health, absenteeism and presenteeism when you lack purpose?, how his app builds a within-person predictive model to help people align with their purposes and why the people who transcend are better innovators and discoverers.
The key elements to create and promote a data-driven culture, Statistically Speaking
This Statistically Speaking discusses the key elements for building a culture of analytics: a shared vision, constancy of purpose and continual reinforcement, software tools that can facilitate/encourage the use of analytics and to train people in their effective use. Committing to these principles fosters adoption and engagement, makes decision making more objective and transparent, and promotes data-driven collaboration within and between teams and stakeholders. Panel includes Bradley Staats, Professor, Kenan-Flagler Business School, UNC Chapel Hill (who also does the plenary); Sameer Vittal, Chief Consulting Engineer for Analytics & Reliability, GE Gas Power and Gregory S. Nelson, Author, The Analytics Lifecycle Toolkit.
Never Stop Learning, Book Chapter
This chapter by Bradley Staats a behavioral scientist and operations professor at the University of North Carolina’s Kenan-Flagler Business School builds on the theme of growing into your purpose. Staats argues that in order to succeed, we must strive to be dynamic learners. The chapter explores the important role others play in our learning success, including their influence on our motivation and on determining what and how we learn. He encourages seeking out people who have information and experiences different from yours and building successful relationships.
