This suggestion has several requests.
1. Make a Mac version of the JMP add-in for Excel.
The current JMP add-in for excel has a lot of nice features. The primary feature necessary for data import are the preference tab, and the Import Table feature.
2. Update the preference tab: Add an "advanced" drop down that includes the relevant Excel import Wizard options. For example Start and Stop columns and row options can be excluded since the data range is defined. Including the "treat hierarcheal..." would specifically be nice to add.
3. Add a source script to the data imported from the data table button in the add-in.
Note on the Mac Excel add-in
Its been 5 or 6 years (7 maybe) since the Excel JMP Add-In was a bright shiny new feature for Windows only.
Several times a week I demo Getting Started with JMP which always includes importing data from Excel into JMP. On a Mac you can't get there from here.
The Microsoft copy and paste only copies visible data from the excel sheet to the clipboard, where the add-in gets the unformatted data. Rounded data are WYSIWYG copied, the actual values are imported from the add-in, which makes the copy and paste option potentially dangerous.
The reasons why Johns Mackintosh Product doesn't have the Excel JMP add-in for Mac are included in a nice post from Jeff P from 2017. It seems like technology or expertise may have progressed enough since then to advance this less-than-sexy utility feature that Mac customers would use every day when they bring data into JMP?
I agree, the Excel import wizard is a fantastic tool.
Compare the simplicity of the one-click data table button in the Excel Add-in for bringing data directly into JMP vs. two pages of options, second page sort of hidden, and technically a third page of settings under the advanced RTM on the second page.
One click button takes 30 sec to explain, the wizard, fantastic as it is, takes 5 min to just scratch the surface. Complexity is a barrier for new users. Lack of features is a barrier for existing users. For the 500,000 new JMP users in the next 4 years, simplicity is key.
Hi @Byron_JMP. There are probably library issues (.net) that mean the Excel add-in can only be a Windows implementation. With that said, I use JMP on the Mac OS to import complex Excel data all the time using the "Excel Wizard" to parse the data. The features in the Excel Wizard are much more complete than the import data in the Widows Add-in. Give the Excel Wizard a try on the Mac!
