Welcome to the JMP Development Update for January 21, 2022!
I hope you all enjoyed our inaugural JMP company kickoff week! It was truly inspiring to hear about how teams around the world are working with their customers to get the most out of JMP products. JMP revenue growth was amazing at 16% and the event sessions were excellent too. I know many of us were especially motivated by the customer stories showcasing how JMP is helping scientists and engineers analyze their data to solve many important and complex problems. And I really appreciated the effort we are going through to measure and begin to manage our carbon footprint as a company. Thanks to Jordan Hiller and Katie Stone for helping move this effort along. Please see Inside JMP for detailed recaps of each day of kickoff along with session recordings.
We have now passed our freeze date for JMP 17 EA6. Please let Mia know if you have a feature you’d like to highlight in EA6, and be sure to add EA6 updates to your feature pages by the end of the day on Monday, Jan 24. Mia will be happy to help if you need anything. If you are planning on recording an EA video – she also needs these by the end of the day Monday. This will be our last EA before JMP 17 Feature Freeze on 2/18/22.
Thanks very much to new JMP Live team member Alex Taylor for sharing a tool demo showcasing Git yesterday. If you missed the meeting, you can find a recording here. As noted in the very active chat session during the Teams meeting yesterday, Git is an industry standard tool for source management with increasing integration with other systems we also use (XCode, VS, Jira, Confluence). There has been an ongoing discussion about Git for a few years now within our group, during which time SAS development adopted Git as their standard tool. As you’ll recall, there was a JMP 16 retrospective brainstorming group on the topic. Please refer to the meeting chat for conversation details and useful links.
Thanks to Tonya Mauldin for sharing this week’s details about beta/crash/telemetry files with crashes selected.

JMP Development Updates
Host
- Paul N:
- Fixed a manual activation issue encountered by a customer using JMP 9 (!!!) who needed to activate manually but was getting errors due to a latent bug in the system when manually activating JMP 10 and older versions. It had been present since the manual activation page was updated for JMP 11 and newer. Prior to the AWS migration, the internal manual page used a different mechanism, so tech support would have been able to activate JMP for the customer. This is now fixed on our internal AWS pages and on Peter’s external facing page on jmp.com.
- Made progress on replacement of original Open Street Map server. Current one is running on ancient, and now unsupported version of Red Hat Enterprise Linux, with mapping software dependent on Python 2. Python 2 is deprecated and no longer receives any updates - security or otherwise. The original map server is running on outdated map data that is several years old. Succeeded in getting a built from scratch OSM server running on a Linux Virtual Machine. I have it serving tiles, currently loaded with current north-america-pacific data. Currently in process of adding Mexico data to the server.
- Some of the things to do before a replacement server can go live:
- Point JMP at this test server and verify it works with JMP.
- Rebuild with the latlong projection expected by JMP versions < 16.2, and retest.
- Setup new physical server.
- Load up the world’s data.
- John Schroedl: Enable BLAS by default. Double-clicking JMP files in Explorer should no longer send the files to server pool instances of JMP to open. Investigating flickering in Open dialog when filtering to All Files (*.*).
- Aaron: JMP Live Publish on Client work. Working on EvalContext threading fixes with Evan. Added .jmpflow file type support to Windows and Mac hosts, open, and save dialogs.
HTML5
- John Powell: Worked with Christine and Josh on screening candidates and planning interviews for our software developer position, then interviewed one candidate. Hosted the JMP HTML5 breakout room at kickoff and contributed my notes from the conversations. Found and documented some hard to find regressions from a change in mid-December. Knowledge transfer of some of Bryan’s technical areas. Year-end wrap up discussions with team members and Brian C.
- Mayowa: Working on fixing bug with inaccurate click selection of categorical parallel sections in parallel plots (JMPHTML-1477), had knowledge sharing sessions with Bryan Fricke.
JMP Live
- Justin: Added button for on-demand refresh on the data table landing page. Also added data table setting/content update history table to the History tab on the landing page.
- Aurora: Continued work on replacing / republishing an existing report post with "publish on client". Finished everything except for the scenario of replacing a JMP Live report and updating an existing JMP Live data table along the way. Working on that scenario now.
Statistics
- Peng: Worked with Leo Wright to prepare materials for reliability analysis related training, plus a couple of fixes and continuing testing of repeated measures degradation.
- Annie: Worked on the 3-Way Control Chart dialog, adding methods to set each of the 3 chart types, along with setting the sample size. (Jira issues JMP-8365 &JMP-8366).
- Laura C-S: Participated in kickoff meetings and continued work on multiple-group analysis.
Stat Documentation
- Karen: Attended kick-off (with oatmeal) this week and continued working on rewrites for Bivariate and Oneway.
- Colleen: Getting review PDF’s out for several chapters, Process Screening updates, updating and adding help keys, and documenting some NF defects.
- Michael C: Cleaned up doc files in preparation for the EA 6 help build; attended kickoff meetings; updated the reports that writers use to be Jira-only reports now.
Stat Testing
- Mark: Attended all the kick-off events – great start! Helping with design of Easy DOE with Brad and Joseph. Testing Easy DOE with Jacob. Finished my editing of ASQ Handbook (for now). Answered questions in JMP Community. Assisted Jianfeng with design of UI for equivalence tests.
- Jacob: Testing Design Explorer with Mixture Factors, MSA Design with Nested Factors, and Easy DOE and the new save .jmpdoe feature. Adding unit tests for Blas and Lapack numeric routines. Reviewing documentation for Explore Missing Values.
- Tonya: Working on reporting for the beta program and bug verification.
Product Management
- Dieter: Prepared our JMP in the cloud paper for Discovery, worked with Brian on an certificate issue CEA Grenoble had and helped Ryan Clare with the JMP asset library.
- Mia: Thanks to everyone who provided questions for the Kickoff “This is JMP” session, and to all of you who recorded introductory videos and participate in the developer Q&A. The recording of the session is here.
- Bryan: Spent time in knowledge in transfer sessions, working on defects, attending kickoff, and handling some UX Workstream logistics. Last week we had fun with a little snow and hope you did too.

Development Operations
- Jim: Updated the JMP Clinical Early Adopter License Agreement provided by Rachel Smith on the Mac; Drew mentioned that JMP C EA7 will be the initial EA release for Mac. Cleaning up disk space on JMPSRV01. Preparing for JMP 17 EA6. Reported assertion failures as a result of the latest Debug UT run on mac OS. Reported (Service Now #INC0569482) that I was unable to revert a unit test VM, which ultimately revealed that the SD cards need to be replaced on one of our aging systems.
Documentation
- Qiana: Participated in JMP Kickoff 2022. Met with WebWorks developer, trying to figure out how to address the JA and ZH 16.2 Help search time issue. Attended “Optional JMP Dev Demo: Gitlab”. Continued reviewing resumes and watching HireVue videos. Worked on JMP Academy homework. Pushed JMP 17 EA6 Help to production.
System/Host Testing-Cary
- Mandy: Attended all the JMP Kick off meetings – all very good and informative. Worked with Dan S. on tabulate fixes with Packed columns for the next EA; Did a little testing with Workflow builder to ensure it is good for the next EA; Added a few JSL test cases for Action recording-Save column additions with platforms. The new Big Class Families table was pushed out JMP-666 and I’ve reinstalled JMP 17 and tested the table and rebenched JSL tests where I needed to with the new Pet column added.
- Mike M: Attended JMP 2022 KickOff. What a GREAT job everyone did! It truly inspires me to work here! Updated Sikuli TableMerge test for updates to Big Class Families. Finished investigation and updates to App Builder Encryption test (thanks Dan!), worked to recreate scrolling bug with list boxes, and reviewed several huge image diffs from last week for any irregularities.
- Lisa: Entered a bug reported in an EA5 track regarding marker size persistence, verified 17.0 feature to add additional color blindness filters, and entered a request to better handle the transition from horizontal bar charts to treemaps.
- Hui: Explored and reported an HTML5 issue for the new feature of using multiple image columns on desktop. Thank Mandy for the demo. Updated John P. about the findings. Reported a regression when saving a journal. Used text explorer platform for a text analysis project.
- Nick H: Late last week I added some tests to the performance testing suite for some common string and list operations. Jacob has since integrated them into the nightly runs so we should now have a way to analyze the performance of these operations over time.
- Hunter: Mostly defect verification and investigated some host issues recognizing the new .jmpdoe file type.
- Josh L. – Working on JSL Scripts. Trouble shooting a publishing issue, turned out to be expired credentials. I suggested that they add , Prompt(Ifneeded) ); to their JSL. This will cause a prompt to logon to JMP Live instead of getting an error. Our Windows 11 boxes were down due to a hardware issue on V-Sphere. I directed the test team to a Windows 11 box I have running in Azure.

Note from Shannon
Big congratulations to JMP Live developer Justin Chilton who married his sweetheart Emily last weekend! Here’s a beautiful picture of the happy couple on their special day. Congratulations, you two!

Finally, thanks also to Anne Milley who shared the following from customer Tim Gardner at Riffyn. His 7th grade son used Fit Model, Prediction Profiler, Mean Diamonds, RMSE estimates, P-values, and Visualizations for his first science project.
Tim said, “Sure beats Google Sheets! Honestly, he had more trouble writing the report than he did learning JMP. Y’all have a beautiful product. (I know I’ve said that before.
”

That’s one way to continue to grow our user base - start them on JMP when they’re young! Apparently this works for product managers too-Dan V got started with JMP in 4th grade, after all. Hope you all have a great weekend and stay safe with the winter weather coming!
