JMP leaders give a year in review and vision for the future
At Kickoff we start the year off right – building relationships, celebrating accomplishments, sharing knowledge, and planning for the next 12 months. This week marks the first Kickoff for JMP as a company, rather than a division of SAS. And the first day was dedicated to our business infrastructure.

Year in review
JMP was successful in 2021 from many perspectives:
- JMP grew 16.6%, back to double-digit growth after a tough 2020.
- JMP passed $1 billion in total revenue at SAS, joining a small group of SAS products to do so.
- JMP grew its workforce by 52 people. We now have 255 employees in the US, 144 outside of the US and 55 job openings to fill. (Help us recruit!)
- JMP Statistical Discovery LLC was born.
John Sall explains why JMP has become a separate companyJMP is now officially known as JMP Statistical Discovery LLC. Why are we embarking on this new journey? In short, it provides better long-term prospects for JMP. As John Sall put it, “We don’t want it stripped or flipped.”
We have a strong business for many reasons. John paid tribute to the people who have already left a legacy for JMP, building the foundation in its earliest days. Most of them still work for JMP.
Jon Weisz attributed success in 2021 to lots of factors, including our “customers who really love the product and are empowered in using it.”

Conditions in 2022
“We are in the age of analytics. This is our era,” said John. While we’ll likely experience more COVID uncertainty, we should look forward to the new release – JMP 17 – and work toward another year of double-digit growth.
Recognizing that it is “very hard to look out in these times,” Jon forecasts that in 2022 we will achieve:
- Total Software Revenue: $139 million
- New licenses: $33 million
- Renewals: $106 million
Delineating customers and users
The JMP User Acquisition missionJulian Parris, Director of User Acquisition, gave an inspiring overview of his team’s mission “to maximize the probability that a person will be a user of JMP if they need JMP,” as well as methods for helping potential users “adopt a JMP lifestyle.”
Why? Because “we owe it to the world to tell them about JMP,” said Julian.
Jeff Perkinson, Director of User Enablement, described initiatives that will allow users to make the most of their investment in JMP, including a continuum of learning and support opportunities and feedback gathered through the JMP User Platform.
“We can’t make it to our goal of one million users without keeping the ones we have,” he explained.
Ruth Hummel, Sr. Manager of Analytical Education, said that JMP Education will have a more global focus than it has in the past, will develop clearer learning paths, and will plan offerings based on how our users want to learn and how much time they can spend on learning.
More highlights
Diana Levey, Sr. Director of Global Marketing, painted a picture of her team of corporate communicators and memory makers, and how they inspire data explorers around the world to try JMP.
John Jones, Director of Digital Operations, provided a high-level timeline of the work to stand up right-size systems for our company.
New Finance Director Jason Romanos introduced himself and his growing team, adding that he is inspired to join a company with “a strong culture around doing the right thing.”
General Counsel Rachel Smith highlighted successes with the simplified and modernized license terms and agreements. She explained that we’re seeing quicker negotiation times – Amazon.com accepted its order form in 1 hour and 10 minutes, Element Biosciences accepted in a record 34 minutes.
Two top takeaways from Rachel:
If you work in sales, you may get questions about JMP Statistical Discovery LLC from customers. If so, reach out to Business Operations for help responding – we want a consistent and coordinated response to customers.
If you’ve used SAS Legal in the past (e.g., for HR matters, registering intellectual property, vendor agreements), you may continue to so, but copy Rachel on your communication. We need to track how we use SAS Legal to put necessary systems in place for the future.
Janet Stone, HR Director, announced that all JMP employees, regardless of job title or location, will be on a bonus plan this year that is based on JMP financial performance as well as your own. “JMP has seen very positive results over the past years,” said Janet. “Going forward your bonus plans will reflect that success.”
R&D updates
The evolution of JMP Workflow BuilderDuring his opening remarks, John emphasized we will continue to invest in R&D so that we can maintain a highly technical product that meets the evolving needs of our users.
Guided by R&D’s unofficial motto – “always be improving” – Audrey Shull, Sr. Manager of Development Testing, reviewed the group’s commitment to process improvement with specifics on the Early Adopter program, the transition to Confluence and a case study on the evolution of Workflow Builder. We’ll get much more detail about the product during the Day 2 Session: All About the Software.
And as Weisz said, hopefully 2022 will be like the old song "We'll Meet Again." We all look forward to seeing each other in person. For now, we'll see you all Wednesday and Thursday for the remainder of Kickoff.
