Great project @katie_stone and @Jordan_Hiller . I look out my window in Bldg. A ,at the large solar farm. Since it went up, I see no hawks mid-day and wonder if the solar farm structure has done anything to wildlife (like small mammal hawk food). I've read conflicting things about the good and bad impacts of soalr farms. Would be interesting to include info about this and in general our architecural footprints worldwide in the study.

Chris_Kirchberg

To add to @gail_massari comments,

I have also read the impact of wind turbines on creatures that fly as well (bats, and birds for example).

Another example are stories of materials we send off for recycling not getting recycled and ending up in landfills or the ocean. Defeating the point of recycling. How widespread is that?

Overall, it would be nice to see the "balance sheet" of everything (as much as we can) in this analysis/study.

Thanks, @gail_massari and @Chris_Kirchberg, all great points. Let us see what we can find out.

Transitioning to a more sustainable world, that relies on renewable energy that reduce greenhouse gas emissions, is not without environmental and financial tradeoffs. But when our world has seen the 6th hottest year on record (https://www.pbs.org/newshour/science/for-6th-straight-year-earth-sets-record-for-hottest-in-history), I see no other choice but to move aggressively forward with decarbonization to get to net zero.

I am on my town's Alternative Energy Committee and we face an uphill battle because of the capital needed to transition, and other pushback, but data can help make our argument of why it is critical. I am working with another Committee member on getting the funding to establish our town's carbon footprint, also with the help of a consultant, because as I have relayed it to the town board, "When you start a diet the first thing you need to do is get on the scale to establish a baseline so you can see if you are making progress."

katie_stone

Hey @jostau, thanks for sharing that article. Have you seen the source data they referenced? It would make a great JMP Public post, just sayin'!

Ryan_Gilmore

Also, this would make for some good conversation in the Data for Green group in the external side of the Community.

@katie_stone Agreed on JMP Pub! From the source they referenced, do you mean NASA or NOAA or the scientists?

Indeed, this is Great project @katie_stone and @Jordan_Hiller.

Last September, I had read a book titled Numbers Don't Lie: 71 Things You Need to Know About the World by Vaclav Smil.

Based on data, the author allows us to see what is happening on the earth from a very comprehensive perspective.

For example, this is what he wrote in the section "transparent energy solution" on the book.

"In the United States and the European Union, buildings account for about 40% of total primary energy consumption. Transportation is second, accounting for 28% in the US and 22% in the EU. And heating and cooling account for half of the energy consumed in residential buildings. That's why the best thing we can do to increase our energy budget is to increase insulation so it doesn't lose heat.
...
In other words, triple glazing (glass window) can reduce energy loss by up to 90 percent compared to single glazing (glass window)."

(The book I had read of was Korean translation version. So, the above excerpts may differ slightly from the contents of the original English version.)
