Welcome to the JMP Development Update for January 14, 2022!
We will wrap up JMP 17 EA6 at the end of the day next Friday January 21st. Thanks to everyone for working to get features ready for the next round of feedback! We will have three more EAs after this one.
After we return to work after the MLK Day holiday on Monday, we’ll gather in morning Zoom sessions for JMP Kickoff 2022 on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday at 8:30 am. I’m looking forward to hearing about our latest wins at new and existing customer sites around the world! Development will be featured in many Kickoff sessions. Of course, John Sall will start us off with his thoughts on our new company structure, sales results as well as ongoing development efforts in the main plenary session. Audrey Shull will share some more about how we do what we do as a development team. Development managers will also be featured in the R&D Town Hall that will be part of the All About the Product session hosted by our product management team. We’ll also gather with JMP colleagues from around the world in Meet the Experts breakouts. Hope you can make all the sessions and have a chance to meet some new JMP colleagues in the process!
JMP 17 Feature Freeze is also coming up between EA6 and EA7 – this milestone is planned for Friday February 18th. In addition to being an important date for major feature completion, feature freeze also marks the date when our product management colleagues begin finalizing product related materials needed for the launch (training documents, website content, new features presentation templates and examples, etc). Like the JMP user interface and other development deliverables that ship with the product, many PM-produced materials need to be translated and reviewed so that they can be ready to share with JMP customers in all regions on launch day.
Thanks to David White for presenting to C++ developers at the JMP Dev meeting on January 6 about opting into Action Recording for Save Column commands in platforms. If you missed the meeting, you can find the recording here. It’s been fantastic this week to see so many developers taking David’s advice to heart and adding this type of support into their own platforms. Big thanks also go out to Mandy Chambers – she’s been taking a first pass at testing this functionality across all platforms, adding an initial unit test for each one, and preparing instructions to pass along to platform testers.
We will meet next week for a tool demo by new JMP Live and Host group member Alex Taylor. He’ll present a tool demo on GitLab, a widely used tool both SAS and other companies, including the company Alex previously worked at (Cloudbees, parent company of Jenkins). I have a couple additional meetings on the calendar so far for 2022, but please contact me if you are interested in presenting this spring at a dev meeting!
Thanks to Tonya Mauldin for sharing this week’s details on Beta/Crash/Telemetry Tracks with crashes selected.

- Joseph: Working on getting Easy DOE ready for the next EA.
Host
- John Schroedl: Performance fix for isJMPPro(). Crash investigation from Bobby Riggs shows that the Menu Editor has a .NET object leak which can lead to crashes later in a session when attaching via remote desktop. Copying tab pages to clipboard has layout issues; working on that with Dan S.
HTML5
- John Powell: Working with Christine Bevans and Josh Markwordt to recruit a new developer for the HTML5 Team. This is the external posting. Marker segment load time performance optimization by moving some time consuming logic from JavaScript to C++. Started Year End reviews. SAS Management training curriculum. Met with Janet Stone regarding SAS manager resources. HTML5 backlog grooming/refinement.
- Mayowa: Working on adding row labels to parallel plots for categorical variables in interactive HTML (JMPHTML-1326).

- New:

- Aurora: Gathered requirements for enforcing unique package titles within a JMP Live folder. Also, continued work on "publish on client". Started work on replacing / republishing an existing report post. Clarified file re-use rules (only data tables can be re-used).
Statistics
- Annie: Worked on a few challenging (to me) defects in CCB:
- JMP-10272: Within Sigma Capability turned off in CCB with Include Missing Categories
- JMP-8114: Crash clicking Undo to remove the phase role for this control chart.
- JMP-10345: Start Over should not occur when changing from Variables to Attribute after using Undo

We continue to field calls from customers regarding the Log4j vulnerability, along with the usual questions. Here are the TS JMP Live reports. (JMP Live 16) Also, here is information regarding Jira tickets opened by Tech Support.

Product Management
- Bryan F: Completed a first draft of the Confidence Curves paper. Met with the UX Workstream group to propose goals and how to organize our work. Will incorporate feedback from the session and begin the process of forming teams to work on different aspects of the project. Collaborated on a couple of JMP Live issues with Michael Goff related to the JMP Brand Creative Guide. Michael proactively reached out to both JMP marketing and product management about syncing up with the recommendations in the guide. Consequently, I packaged the favicon referenced in the guide for JMP Live use and worked with Michael on an issue that prevented using the exact colors recommended in the guide. Worked on a dark mode issue related to profiler controls and began tracking down an issue related to Alaska and Hawaii not being shown on a graph that shows all the US states.

Note from Shannon
I noticed this interesting article in Wired the other day about recently published studies that explored capturing DNA for species identification from the air outside a few different zoos using air filters. Similar methods are already used for environmental DNA (eDNA) capture from water samples, and can even be used to identify microscopic microbial species that can’t even be cultured in a lab. The authors of the article speculate that these methods may eventually complement other tools like photographic capture and animal footprint tracking for monitoring wildlife populations. So interesting!
Hope you all have a wonderful weekend, and enjoy the snow, if we get some!
