The JMP Academic team wrapped up a successful 2021. By the numbers:
143 new annual licenses
110% TSR achievement
More than 500 new college courses using JMP
34 new universities onboarded the JMP Academic Suite in Q4 alone
Congratulations to each region for exceeding their usage and impact goals. Here are just a few Q4 highlights from regions around the world.
AMERICAS
University of Michigan - FlintWith the Q4 addition of a new campus-wide Academic Suite at the University of Michigan-Flint, Pany Allen (@pany_allen) shares that we now have campus-wide licenses at each of the University of Michigan campuses (joining Ann Arbor and Dearborn). JMP will be used at Flint’s campus for teaching several courses in a new multidisciplinary data analytics program offered by the college of Arts & Sciences, School of Management and School of Nursing.
Look for upcoming coverage on the Academic Faculty Use Survey from Kevin Potcner.2021 marks the 10th year that the Academic Team has conducted our annual fall Academic Faculty Use Survey. They received over 1,200 global responders sharing information about their JMP usage this year – the highest response ever, according to Kevin Potcner (@Potcner). This year’s survey revealed over 500 new courses exposing about 50K students to JMP and over 700 research initiatives that use JMP. Look for an upcoming video from Kevin about the survey, these results and how you can leverage this information in your territories on InsideJMP.
The JMP Learning Library has been updated by Ross Metusalem (@Ross_Metusalem) with 29 new two- to five-minute JMP demo videos. With the completion of the videos, each of the 100+ Learning Library entries now has a video demo paired with its corresponding one-page PDF guide. These videos and PDF guides are designed to provide the essential step-by-step instruction for a JMP or JMP Pro platform with the terminology used and topic sequence typically covered in college courses. Many commercial users also find these guides useful, especially those who are moving from older traditional software like Minitab to JMP. Thanks go to Ryan DeWitt (@ryandewitt) for creating a new branded intro “stinger” for the new videos.
ASIA
Clare Zhang (@Clare) reports that they have secured seven new Academic Suites and upgrades in Greater China in Q4, including the following two wins in the medical science area:
Weifang Medical University. Professor Wang is the Department Chair of Biostatistics in the School of Public Health at Weifang Medical University. Clare and Juliana Zhou (@JulianaZhou) first met Professor Wang at a biostatistics conference where she expressed interest in JMP Genomics. After providing an evaluation and support, she was impressed by the capabilities and modules within JMP Genomics and considered it a good match for their genome research needs at the new lab. Professor Wang acquired JMP Pro and JMP Genomics and will use them for teaching and research.
Wenzhou Medical UniversityWenzhou Medical University. The School of Ophthalmology & Optometry at Wenzhou Medical University is the top Ophthalmology school in China. Jingwei Zheng teaches statistics in the school’s biomedical engineering program. He says JMP Pro is perfect for his students who do not code, so they acquired an Academic Suite. Professor Zheng is also considering JMP Genomics for their research needs.
Muralidhara AnandamurthyMurali Anandamurthy (@Muralidhara) reports from India that four new Academic Suites were licensed in Q4, including the chemistry division at the highly ranked Indian Institute of Science. Thanks to Melisa Muhamad (@Melisamuhd) for helping get these licenses in place.
The JMP Asia team collaborated with the Indian Institute of Chemical Engineers (IIChE) for their 74th annual Session CHEMCON-2021 (Dec 27-30, 2021). Thanks to Gina Xie (@GinaXie), Alicia Song (@aliciasong) and Chandramouli Ramnarayanan (@chandramouli) who contributed to the success of the preconference workshop.
IIChE is the leading professional body of Chemical Engineers in India comprised of both corporate and academic members. The JMP team delivered a preconference workshop, Smarter Experimentation for Chemists & Chemical Engineers using JMP. Professors, researchers and working professionals attend the hands-on workshop, which introduced JMP and various experimental designs. The workshop attracted 761 registrations, while 213 unique viewers attended the workshop on event day. This first ever collaboration has generated a lot of visibility for JMP in the field of chemistry and chemical engineering in India.

HS AalenHS Aalen (Aalen University of Applied Sciences), founded in 1962 in the eastern part of the German state of Baden-Württemberg, offers a total of 60 study programs and 30 master’s degree programs in the fields of technology and business. Prof. Dr. med. Ulrich Schiefer, Head of Vision Research Competence Center, started his journey into exploratory data analysis with a perpetual license of JMP 11 when he was supervising his students' theses. At the beginning of the pandemic, Prof. Schiefer championed JMP to university academic leaders and decision makers, helping them understand the benefit of providing all students with JMP for both remote and hybrid courses. Paolo Chiappa (@paolo_chiappa) and Volker Kraft (@volker_kraft) provided as much support as possible, dismantling the dominant position of the two main software programs available there (R and MATLAB) by deploying an evaluation license for six months and offering a series of online introductory workshops. Eventually, the university dean and key decision makers were persuaded by “the quick learning curve of JMP and the indeed excellent personal support.” HS Aalen purchased a new campus-wide JAS license to cover its 6,000 students and 150 professors in engineering, chemistry and business (31DEC2021).
The French ministry of education created a new Scientific Technical Diploma in Chemistry in 2016 to train students in high schools and secondary technical institutes on the practical aspects of the Chemical sector: Analysis, Synthesis, Formulation and QHSSE. Recently, the 30 French high schools teaching the new diploma created a network, RASF - Réseau Analyse, Synthèse et Formulation (Analysis, Synthesis and Formulation Network), to share best practices on how to improve syllabi and teaching/learning methods and tools. After their review of the many teaching and learning resources available via the JMP Academic Program and JMP’s ideal fit in teaching and learning design of experiments and introductory statistics, many professors have decided to abandon Minitab (available for years at those schools) and use JMP in their courses. We expect this will lead to about 500 students per year on Mixture Design, PCAs and EDA. Hopefully many more schools will come!
Phil Kay (@Phil_Kay) and Volker Kraft provided hands-on sessions using JMP Pro for the short course Demystifying Maths & Stats for Bioscientists, organized by Newcastle and Teesside Universities. JMP intern Owen Jonathan (@Owen_Jonathan) also attended the course and learned much about JMP and DOE during his first weeks. Owen will be working on market research in bioprocess and synthetic biology industries in the new year.
