Re: Issues/watchouts when overlaying Parallel and Points in Graph Builder - Status changed to: Acknowledged@mjoner thank you for your suggestion. We have captured your request and will take it under consideration
Re: Issues/watchouts when overlaying Parallel and Points in Graph Builder - Status changed to: Needs Info@mjoner it's not clear what the issue is here. Please keep in mind that Parallel plot is not being actively maintained and the parallel plot in Graph Builder is our supported approach for creating these types of plots.
When I ran your script, it only showed the points on the left most parallel element. Was that intentional? When you create a parallel plot in JMP 16 Graph Builder and also select the points element you get this graph

and this is the script to recreate
dt = Open( "$SAMPLE_DATA/SAT.jmp" );
dt << Graph Builder(
Size( 818, 616 ),
Show Control Panel( 0 ),
Variables(
X( :"2004 Verbal"n ),
X( :"2004 Math"n, Position( 1 ) ),
X( :"2003 Verbal"n, Position( 1 ) ),
Color( :State )
),
Elements(
Parallel( X( 1 ), X( 2 ), X( 3 ), Legend( 6 ) ),
Points( X( 1 ), X( 2 ), X( 3 ), Legend( 7 ) )
)
);
Re: Issues/watchouts when overlaying Parallel and Points in Graph Builder@SamGardner Yes, intentional. The bug being reported here is that we had some inexperienced user get into Graph Builder and want to see points and parallel at the same time (presumably to get the advantage of the tooltip when hovering the point)... but that user then turned off points for some of the X's and while leaving all X's selected for Graph Builder's parallel element. This then creates a disconnect where the points element is rendered against the wrong variables in conjunction with overlaying the parallel element.
What I was trying to point out here is I think the choice of X's has to be linked if overlaying points element and parallel element: if a user tries to de-select an X from parallel, it should also deselect from points, and vice versa.
Or, if there is a good reason to allow independent selections of which X's are showing, GB needs to render the overlay correctly. For example, in my original JSL the points for "2003 verbal" should be showing and they should show in the "2003 Verbal" column of parallel (which is the right column, not the left one!).
Hopefully this explanation is a little clearer, reading back I can see how my original one was confusing (and I'm not sure if I've done better here). If it's still confusing let's get on a short call.
Re: Issues/watchouts when overlaying Parallel and Points in Graph BuilderThanks for the clarification @mjoner . Yes, it is odd behaviour and this looks like a bug. Can you report this to JMP Technical Support (support@jmp.com), and provide the link for this post in the message? For future purposes, issues that appear to be bugs in current versions, it is best to submit those to JMP Technical Support. The Wish Lists are best used for new feature requests.
Re: Issues/watchouts when overlaying Parallel and Points in Graph BuilderIt was already reported as 7613488503. This number is already on this wish list idea post, too. We have a habit of posting both to Tech Support and to this wish list.
Issues/watchouts when overlaying Parallel and Points in Graph BuilderIt appears that (1) value orders are not consistent in Parallel Plot and Graph Builder and (2) when not selecting all variables in Points overlay, selected ones insist on showing up at left instead of with the correct columns in the Parallel plot.
Maybe there is a reason that different variables can be selected for Points element vs. for Parallel element, but I can't imagine what that would be.
Here is some code in case you are interested in replicating this issue.
dt = Open( "$SAMPLE_DATA/SAT.jmp" );
dt << Graph Builder(
Size( 854, 668 ),
Variables(
X( :"2004 Verbal"n ),
X( :"2004 Math"n, Position( 1 ) ),
X( :"2003 Verbal"n, Position( 1 ) ),
Color( :State )
),
Elements(
Parallel( X( 1 ), X( 2 ), X( 3 ), Legend( 3 ) ),
Points( X( 3 ), Legend( 4 ) )
),
SendToReport(
Dispatch( {"Points"}, "", OutlineBox, {Close( 0 )} ),
Dispatch(
{},
"Graph Builder",
FrameBox,
{DispatchSeg( ParallelAxisSeg( 1 ), {Transparency( 0.25 )} )}
)
)
);
