Play Ball! JMP and Analytics in Baseball is a new white paper we just published to the JMP Resource Center. Written by Sig Mejdal, VP & Assistant General Manager for the Baltimore Orioles, the paper describes how Mejdal uses JMP to evaluate players for the MLB draft, assess talent in free agency, evaluate player performance, and in many other areas.
He demonstrates how he's used JMP capabilities to discover the predictive ability in the data, illustrate it to others and create tools to ensure the utilization of the findings as well. Mejdal also shows us how he uses JMP to share findings and tell stories in a way that traditional, often non-analytical, baseball decision makers can understand. Using JMP Graph Builder and the interrelationships between JMP graphs Mejdal discovered he could find hidden patterns in the data, and communicate his analysis and guide users to the answers, often by simply dragging columns of data into JMP Graph Builder.
The paper is full of helpful visualizations (with help from JMP's Kevin O'Donnell and Xan Gregg) and some great stories from the baseball world.

It's an important asset given the dearth of sports analytics assets we have in the JMP Resource Center.

Even though the title has baseball it it, there are important take-aways for many--especially as it pertains to evolving the culture to a more analytical one.
