On December 9 JMP presented our latest Technically Speaking event, How to Model Complex, High-Dimensional Chemical Spectra. With more than 600 registrations the event was a clear success. What might have made the event truly unique was that more than twice as many existing users than new users attended, meaning good upsell opportunities exist for JMP Pro. Highlighting features only available in JMP Pro, Bill and Jeremy showed attendees how to do spectral analysis in JMP, including data pre-processing, exploratory data analysis and predictive modeling.

Since much of the event highlighted capabilities in JMP Pro, consider sending your customers and prospects to the JMP Pro web landing page. The page highlights the advanced features in JMP Pro, including Functional Data Explorer (FDE). This page also highlights the form requesting an evaluation of JMP Pro.
Analyzing spectroscopic data: Pre-Processing, JMP Blog on JMP Community
This blog from Bill Worley maps up nicely with content from the event. In the blog, Bill shows how using Functional Data Explorer and covariate design of experiments allows for fewer spectra to be used in the development of a good predictive model. He also discusses how newer multivariate platforms like Model Driven Multivariate Control Charts (MDMCC) can be used to enhance spectral data analysis.
Spectral Tools, JMP Blog on JMP Community
This blog from Jeremy Ash also covers many of the topics from the event. It describes, at a high level,
Spectral Tools he and Bill created for analyzing spectral data, or related data (chromatograms, etc.). Most of the functionality can already be performed in JMP, but the intent was to streamline the process. Hopefully this will help lower the barrier to entry for new users, and make routine tasks faster for experienced users. You should also share part 1 and part 2 of their blog, which describes the spectral analysis workflow.
Analyzing Spectral Data: Preprocessing and Beyond, JMP Discovery Paper US 2021
The most recent Discovery presentation on the topic, this talk was delivered by JMP’s Bill Worley and Jeremy Ash at this year’s Discovery Summit Americas. JMP’s capabilities for analyzing spectral data from preprocessing to building predictive models are shown, as are visualization, preprocessing and model development for spectroscopists, analytical chemists and material scientists. Bill and Jeremy review and demonstrate standard normal variate (SNV) and Savitsky-Golay (SG) smoothing using JMP and share more advanced preprocessing tools and how Functional Data Explorer can be used to visualize and qualitatively analyze spectra.
Using Multivariate Tools in JMP for Analysis of Spectral Data, JMP Discovery Summit Americas 2020.
Delivered by Bill Worley. This presentation outlines using Functional Data Explorer and covariate design of experiments for fewer spectra to be used in the development of a good predictive model. Note that much content here is also covered in Bill’s blog.
Pre-Processing Spectroscopic Data for Analysis , JMP Discovery Paper EU 2021
Recorded presentation from Bill Worley for Discovery Summit Europe 2021. Bill highlights pre-processing spectroscopic data as an important first step in preparing your data for analysis. He also reviews and demonstrates Standard Normal Variate (SNV) and Savitsky-Golay (SG) smoothing using JMP, pre-processing tools that are fairly standard throughout industry.
Functional Data Explorer: Visualizing Results to Non-Data Scientists, JMP Discovery Paper EU 2020
This presentation from Discovery Summit Europe 2021 is from Simon Stelzig, Head of Data-Driven Development at Lohmann. Stelzig uses adhesive formulation and tape development as a backdrop for how data specialist talks with a non-specialist about complex data analysis in a non-complex way. He shows how the Functional Data Explorer is a great tool to perform such analysis and visualize the results in a spectral-like form, where the resulting predicted spectra greatly helps the developer gain insight and develop a mechanistic understanding.
Fujifilm Diosynth Biotechnologies, Customer Success Story
This customer success story JMP® Pro is helping scientists at Fujifilm Diosynth Biotechnologies (FDB) to establish new data science proficiencies in support of the company’s broader business goals. Talks about how Fujifilm uses exploratory data analysis and dimension reduction with the tool’s Functional Data Explorer platform to design of experiments and visualization and how JMP provides a strategic, cost-effective means for scientists to grow process knowledge in less time.
