Welcome to the JMP Development Update for November 19, 2021!
JMP 17 EA4 is out the door and is already getting internal and external feedback. Thanks for all your work updating feature pages, making videos and preparing items for testing! Product management has announced the availability of EA4 to customers with an email highlighting newly introduced and enhanced features and new videos. JMP 17 EA5 will be cut to match the evening build for December 10.
A few final high priority fixes were added to JMP 16.2 this week in preparation for creating a final installer candidate and kicking off installer validation next week. We’ll be tracking testing efforts for JMP and JMP Pro annual license and subscription in JMPTEST-163 and tracking validation of JMP Trial installers in JMPTEST-409.
Thanks to Audrey Shull, Nick Holmes and Justin Chilton for tag teaming at this week’s dev meeting to present on unit test updates and answer questions in the chat. If you missed the meeting, you can see a recording here. Nick has since pushed the updates to the JSL Unit Test GUI, so you can sync //depot/main/test/JSL/ to get them. Note that you will need to use them in a November JMP 17 build (after CL 562899) to allow updates like the 3 state checkbox to work. Please send them any feedback you might have after trying out the changes, which Nick detailed below:
- Incorporation of text subsets "Stress", "Rapid" and "Superbaseline"
- You can view this list in a JMP data table
- You can choose a preset filter which pulls from the text subsets
- Additional Perforce integration
- Prompts you to update your subset lists if they are not up to date
- Additions to the gear menu to sync all unit tests and all subset lists
- Display of the current filter(s) selected as text in the GUI
- Run Superbaseline button
- Selects the superbaseline filter and then runs the tests
- Partial selection of check boxes
Thanks to Tonya Mauldin for sharing this week’s details about Beta/Crash Telemetry tracks with crashes selected. The JMP Live report is here: Beta/Crash/Telemetry tracks for the week of 11/19/2021 | JMP Live (sas.com)

General Announcements
- Hope you all saw the Inside JMP article on JMP’s participation in the Wake County Holiday Cheer program again this year! We have a great history of helping those less fortunate in our area through this program. You also have an opportunity to participate in the SAS Salvation Army Angel Tree drive coordinated by WIN. You can submit a request here – the last I heard they still had a few children left to sponsor.
- If you’re willing to be a featured employee on Inside JMP, please download a copy of the Get to Know form. Simply fill out the questions and when you’re done, upload it, along with 3 photos of you to the folder. Thank you for helping to make our JMP family a little more familiar!
Important Upcoming Dates

- Please visit Confluence for a full list of JMP 16 and JMP 17 dates.
JMP Development Updates
HTML5
- Josh M:
- JMPHTML-1219: The exported Html5 Partition Categorical Profiler with Nominal response did not display the curves
- This was a large change that addresses the weird behavior in the Match operator, unfortunately I had to port these bugs to JavaScript as it is unlikely they will be updated for consistency in JMP (see JMP-7579 and JMP-2150)
- This unblocks Partition, Boosted Trees and Bootstrap Forest for categorical profilers. Wrote email to the testers to begin testing.
- Paid down some technical debt by updating all the mosaic tests that had NominalAxisBox to help with JMPHTML-852. JMP no longer produces the XML in our unit tests, so really they weren’t that meaningful. This uncovered two bugs in the axis code (now AxisBox is used instead):
- JMPHTML-1409: It shows "error reading data" after exporting to html5 with large data table
- First I found a bug in JString.compress() when you provided data larger than 99,999,999 characters long. Evan McCorkle fixed this (see JMP-8807). The updated format can handle up to 1e34-1 characters.
- With the JavaScript fix in place to support Evan’s updated format, the distribution plot with 12.2 million rows exports to HTML and loads in Chrome in 18s and Firefox in 21s! Note, not just any plot will be able to handle this much data.
- Bryan F:
- Completed work on JMPHTML-1406 so that users can show ordinary bar labels above primary bars that may also have packed bar labels.

- Also finished work on JMPHTML-1309 to support double resolution for graphs on both Windows and Macs. Now users can zoom in without the graph looking pixelated up to 200%. The graph should also look crisper on Retina displays. Doing so required reworking the way markers optimized selection and drawing many markers.

- Fixed a couple of issues noted by Andy Zhou. JMPHTML-1191 involved the lightness of certain buttons and JMPHTML-1194 involved the lightness of tabbed containers in dark mode. I created JMPHTML-1428 to address the brightness of the highlight color used in data filters, which I intend to address soon.
- Mayowa: Worked on rendering parallel plots with overlay role as static images (JMPHTML-1288), supporting customized font size for pinned hover labels when the tooltip values font size is customized (JMPHTML-1138).
- John Powell: Fixed tooltip for variance of a categorical variable in color role for Markers (JMPHTML-966). Added support for customized text size via Text Font preference in Local Data Filter and Column Switchers (JMPHTML-1399). Renamed “Submit” to “Update” in the Local Data Filter on JMP Live and added tooltips for “Auto Update” and “Update” as per Susan C. and Landra C.’s advice (design page, JMPHTML-1096) Prepared for end of sprint meetings to be held after Thanksgiving. Provided input and created JMPHTML-1429 based on Andy Z.’s JMP Live/HTML5 feedback via Mia S.
- Praveena: Worked on JMPHTML-1205, added Boolean overload for attribute function, JMPHTML-1166- customization of control font. Working on JMPHTML-1429, emphasize tabulate header.
JMP Live
- Aurora: For hierarchical folders, I stopped tracking and showing view count for folders, and I continued work on a unified REST API endpoint for publishing post(s). However, later in the week I got involved in the design of "publish with webview" which will change that unified endpoint somewhat. We are working on a design that will be more "future proof" and will work with interactive publish and JSL publish, to spaces, folders, etc. Also fixed a bug for user search, investigated a PostgreSQL vulnerability, and took part in design review for refreshable data.
- Michael G: Added support for nested groups. Added action in the JMP Live client to create a new empty folder. Modified space keys to only allow alphanumeric characters. Continued work on webview publish. Various bug fixes.
- Bryan F: Fixed WEBJMP-4242 which was a dark mode issue where messages about a user not being followed or not following others did not appear to be centered when rendered in dark mode.
Statistics
- Jianfeng: Jeremy and I gave a talk at ENBIS-JMP webinar on Wednesday. It went really well, and we had nice feedback from Dr. Murat Caner Testik, chair of ENBIS: “Thank you very much again for this wonderful webinar. I believe that our members benefitted from it very much. Hoping to host you in other ENBIS events in the near future.” Continued to work on the new feature of equivalence test for two proportions (JMP-8040). Thanks!
- Peng: Explained a convergence issue while fitting the threshold Weibull to a user’s data. Debugged a problematic and complicated user calculation which tries to verify confidence interval calculation in Life Distribution. Finished the first test of repeated measure degradation models with an accelerant.
- Laura C-S: Continued rewriting functions in SEM to enable multiple group analysis. Added R^2 estimates by group to the path diagram. Answered a couple questions about SEM including one from a heart surgeon designing a survey.
