Welcome to the JMP Development Update for November 5, 2021!
We welcomed two new people to the JMP team this week! Beth Evans has joined R&D as our new office administrator and you can find her in A4331. You can visit this page in Confluence to find the table of project management and admin responsibilities that Amy sent out earlier in her welcome note. Also, long-time JMP customer Jasean Rasnake has joined Duane’s JMP tech support team. Welcome!!!
We have now officially frozen source code for JMP 16.2. Thanks for all your help fixing, testing and documenting high priority items for our final JMP 16 maintenance release! The doc team and L10N team are working on finalizing their work and we are moving towards creation of a final installer candidate on November 19.
JMP 17 EA4 is also frozen as of 5 pm today. I appreciate all the work on your feature pages for this iteration. JMP product management is thrilled with how much easier these pages make it to gather details about features to share with customers. Mia is working on compiling the Single Source Document for EA4. If you haven’t already, please update your feature pages by Nov 8, and send EA videos to Mia by Nov 10.
Thanks very much to Julian Parris and Mia Stephens for presenting at last week’s JMP Dev meeting! If you missed the meeting, you can find a recording here. Julian presented a JSL prototype for workflow building that leverages JMP’s action recording functionality. Ernest Pasour has already created an initial C++ implementation of the workflow builder for EA4 and we’re looking forward to customer feedback on this new tool.
Thanks to Tonya Mauldin for sharing the Beta/Crash/Telemetry tracks for the week of 11/5/2021 with crashes selected. The JMP Live version of this report can be found here: Beta/Crash/Telemetry tracks for the week of 11/5/2021 | JMP Live (sas.com)

Data Discovery
- Ernest: Initial cut of Workflow builder (JVS) for EA4.
- Dave B: Added line number to the import data preview, limited text added to reports with “Data Title on Output” option, and added size legend to gb/parallel plots.
DOE
- Brad: Inviting participants to the Stu Hunter Conference next March. Working on a new DOE paper with Chris Nachtsheim and Ryan Lekivetz.
- Joseph: More work on Easy DOE. Added the simulation option for Guided users (by way of a disclosure icon), fixed tab transition issues, fixed run size bug for Guided users, worked on JSL support, added EA warning text and fixed miscellaneous bugs.
Host
- Michael H: Worked on the intractable MATLAB problem. Got it to fail on Apple Silicon the same way it fails on Intel Macs. Created a tool to convert Apple’s new .ips crash file format (an ugly JSON file) to the legacy Crash Reporter format that our crash reporting tool chain relies on. Updated symbolize-crash-report to handle the new .ips format, which is the kind of crash report that macOS Monterey now generates.
- John Schroedl: Working on integrating OpenBLAS into Windows project. Weighing options of static vs dynamic link of BLAS code with a runtime swtich. Various VS support questions. A bit of long filename research.
HTML5
- John Powell: Submitted code to make Parallel Plots update/regenerate on JMP Live JMPHTML-1316. Discovered that the issue in JMPHTML-1307 turned out to be a Firefox bug. Josh M. will be looking into a work around. Updated detection of unsupported Pareto Plots so we could continue rendering as a static image until it becomes a priority to support this platform in Interactive HTML (JMPHTML-625). Fixed Zoom and Pan support for Line of Fit confidence regions JMPHTML-1134. Working on font customization support for Local Data Filter JMPHTML-1399. Participated in the JMP Brainstorm Session for 2022. Requested conversion of the last of the HTML5 team’s FUTURE track Defect’s to JIRA (Thanks, Shannon!)
- Bryan F: worked on JMPHTML-1309, discussed at the recent JMP Live Steering committee meeting where a graph can look blurry on a Mac Retina display. Implemented a solution that Brian Corcoran found on the web, and found that HTML5 graphs now look much better when the user zooms with the browser. The solution caused a regression with an optimization used when many markers are drawn. Developed a solution for the regression and will submit it after the EA is good to go. Completed a couple of JMP Live dark mode laying defects (WEBJMP-4012 and WEBJMP-3811). Thanks to Michael Goff for his help on those tasks. Finally, I presented a proposal developed by the UI/UX group 2 (Edgar Beere, Brian Corcoran, Qiana Eaglin, Chris Gotwalt, Xan Gregg, Duane Hayes, Aaron Kennedy, Laura Lancaster, Josh Markwordt, Manuela Merkhofer, Mia Stephens, and Marilyn Wheatley) at the JMP Brainstorm Session.
- Praveena: Completed the fix for textbox background color and table header column color JMPHTML-1240 & JMPHTML-1234. Started work on JMPHTML-1172, Increase size of plot col display with larger fonts.
JMP Live
- Michael G: Lots of small improvements and bug fixing. Getting started on webview publish. Preparation work for hierarchical folders and nested groups.
- Aurora: For Hierarchical Folders, fixed a few pre-existing gaps in publishing posts to a folder (notifications, check for lost large objects). Ensure that the correct pub/sub messages are sent for changes to the folder hierarchy, and that timestamps and control chart warnings propagate up to the immediately owning folder, but no further. Added a filter for posts that have control chart warnings. Stopped writing a now-obsolete audit log record and started updating how we test publishing to a folder.
Statistics
- John Sall: In Hierarchical Clustering, center the data before taking the SVD to use in CCC Criteria for unstandardized. (JMP-7058). Considered proposing changes to the PCA launch dialog, which Jeremy has been working on (feature page here). We should consider more work for unstandardized data, imputation, and robustness for the SVD methods, and even more layering to better navigate all the methods. Watched the David Hand video about the limitations of classification measures.
- Elizabeth: Multiple Comparisons on the data scale (so probabilities and counts for LSMeans and odds ratios and rate ratios for differences) in GLMM (JMP-6490). Begin prep for several mixed models webinars coming in the next few weeks.
- Peng: Continued testing my work on the repeated measure degradation work and fixing discovered issues. Also made a significant performance improvement (JMP-7822) in Life Distribution with Grouping to address the performance issue surfaced during testing the repeated measure degradation work.
- Laura C-S: Finished updating the estimation algorithms in the SEM code. Updating each of the red triangle menu options to handle multiple groups. Helped with a couple of questions on SEM from Tech Support. Double-checked implementation of Bartlett Factor Scores in SEM. Participated in brainstorming session and looking forward to see how those ideas are implemented.
Stat Documentation
- Michael C: Documented more NFs in SEM, Tabulate, and the new Random SVD() JSL function; reviewed strings; started prototyping a JSL script to support Colleen’s screen shot unit testing project.
- Karen: Worked on small defects for the MDMVCC and MDS chapters.
Stat Testing
- Jacob: Writing tests for Easy DOE and Accelerated Life Test Design, and testing updates to Design Explorer. Testing and verifying a 16.2 fix for Missing Value Clustering (JMP-7504). Transitioning the performance testing results from the jmpqafiles SAS server to JMP Live.
- Mark: Supporting Joseph with Developing Easy DOE. Developing unit test scripts for Easy DOE with Jacob. Developing testing strategy with Joseph, Ryan, and Jacob for transitions between modes and tabs in Easy DOE. Addressed two EA comments about Design Space Profiler for Tonya. Attending FTC Webinars.
- Tonya: Worked on a blog post about the dialog options for CCB. Testing the new bias and linearity report for MSA. Bug verification.
