Graph Builder scientific notation and bold lines

Question

Is there a way to show scientific notation as 10^2 (minus the carrot) rather than 1e+2? Additionally, outside of changing the preferences from gray to black, is it possible to bold the outside boundary and tick marks of a plot? Please see the example of both the bold lines and notation below. The scientific notation in the image below is incredibly common in the oil and gas industry and the required format for many O&G and geoscience publications when showing data in log space. Thank you.

Tacking on to Brady's comment about the wishlist - you might put it into the internal wishlist.  I've received some chin-music from customers about what "publication quality graphics" mean.  If you put it on the internal wishlist, the rest of the SE's can add customers that have had similar issues.

Hi Peter,

Yes, it is possible to show the notation you describe using custom axis formatting (see image below)... but I don't think most people are going to want to do this. See if you agree after inspecting the custom formatting code. There are a few moving parts here:

1) Using Unicode for superscripted characters. (Note the discontiguous addressing)

2) Dealing with negative exponents

3) Converting numbers to superscripted character equivalents via lookup by processing one digit at a time

As to the bolded lines: again, this can be done with custom JSL by writing small horizontal and vertical lines to the framebox--as long as the ticks are inside, not outside the graph. This is tedious: the script must be applied to the display tree after the graph is created, and must infer line lengths from the graph's scaling.

It is likely best for the customer to request this formatting using the wish list.

You could recommend that the user export the graph in a vector format (SVG, EMF, PDF) and then apply the edits in another tool, including right inside PowerPoint or Word if they're on Windows. They might find the end of this blog post helpful.
