JMP connection to Electronic Lab NotebookAtotech is acquiring ELN (Electronic Lab Notebook) from Perkin Elmer named Signal Notebook. In short term they want 1) JMP to interface with their ELN, 2) deny access to a JMP file when somebody else is working on it (if connected to ELN that will works through the ELN). Is that possible ?
Note: ELN is supporting Office and likely need help from JMP development to make connection possible.
3) Later they want their ELN and JMP connected to Spotfire, is that possible ?
This will impact JMP growth within Atotech.
Thanks for the help.

Re: JMP connection to Electronic Lab NotebookI would be interested in hearing more about requests like this, and if you can, connect me with the customer. I would like to hear what they have to say.
Generally speaking, my experience has been that this requires a fair amount of IT integration work for it to really be functional. ELNs at the most basic level are databases, with various interfaces to import and export data and information. ELNs can interface with Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS), which tend to be focused on instrument control and instrument data capture. Some of the most useful interfaces in ELNs are the ability to setup an analytical run (with the method parameters and settings), send that to the LIMS system and instrument controllers, and then when the analysis has been performed to automatically capture that instrument output information back into the ELNs.
To do this well, you need some sort of ETL process to actually get the data out in a form that JMP can use. It could be easier if JMP data tables are stored in the ELN, and could be "extracted" directly, but that still requires either some sort of direct way to get a JMP data table as a data flow, or a process to request/download locally/open the JMP table.
Another challenge is that are many different types and vendors of ELNs, and designing JMP to deal with all of them could be a challenge. If the ELN vendor provides an API for accessing data that is reasonably well documented, that could make it a bit easier.
Re: JMP connection to Electronic Lab NotebookJMP could be doing this, and it's kind of insane that there isn't an aggressive campaign to do this with Thermo Fisher.
Re: JMP connection to Electronic Lab NotebookI've run into the Spotfire / Perkin Elmer set up in the past. The customers were not generally impressed. There's a lot of consulting overhead any time someone has a question that's even slightly out of line with what the current dashboard shows. Not sure exactly how the connection is done, but my impression was that it involved a special data connection and/or exported files.

Re: JMP connection to Electronic Lab NotebookHi @Emmanuel_Romeu & @martindemel,
I read very recently where Perkin Elmer is using Spotfire for their cloud solution. Please see the headline below.
"PerkinElmer is the exclusive provider of TIBCO® Spotfire® for scientific and clinical R&D applications. The enterprise-class visual analytics and discovery platform empowers your team or organization to easily mine scientific data and gain insights to drive data-driven decisions real time."

A while back I did this with an Arduino and made some control charts.
A better way to do this is with sockets, but its a bit more complex

at the end of the day, I probably wouldn't connect a headless version of JMP to an instrument in a cGMP or GLP context. There are a lot of other software products for connecting an instrument to a database in a way that would be 21CFR Part 11 compliant.
In cGMP world, the data coming from the instrument and going to the database is something that happens as part of the "closed system". Making JMP run inside the closed system is completely feasible, but why spend a year of two developing that when I can just buy an off the shelf solution, designed for my instruments, for about the cost of 5 JMP licenses.
Re: JMP connection to Electronic Lab NotebookHi Martin, indeed that's my understanding of their goal.
Re: JMP connection to Electronic Lab NotebookHi Emmanuel, not sure this will work, however I can imagine there is a com interface you could use kind of similar as using a external device or a sound card connection. I believe Byron had written some code to connect to a sound card or an external device. May worth a try.
Connection to spotfire? What would be their goal? getting data fom their Lab notebook to JMP doing some analysis and then send it to spotfire to visualize?
