Welcome to the JMP Development Update for October 15, 2021!
We are in Approval Mode for JMP 16.2 as of Tuesday evening, 10/12. Code Freeze for 16.2 is coming up on 11/2/21, and the doc and L10N teams are working towards their own respective freeze dates.
Meanwhile, JMP 17 EA3 was announced to customers on October 13 and feedback on new features is already coming in. It’s great to see customers excited about new EA3 additions like GLMM and Design Explorer. You can still invite qualified customers to join the EA program via the request form at jmp.com/earlyadopter. For more information on the JMP EA Program, please see the Early Adopter Program FAQ or feel free to reach out to Mia Stephens.
We’ll be freezing for JMP 17 EA4 on 11/5/21. Thanks for all the work keeping your JMP 17 feature pages up to date! These pages are tremendously helpful in so many ways-beyond feature status monitoring, they help product management compile the marketing single source document that informs the EA web pages and later training efforts as we move closer to launching JMP 17.
Thanks very much again to Elizabeth Claassen for presenting at this week’s JMP dev meeting. If you missed the meeting, you can find a recording here. Elizabeth received some nice kudos at the meeting from Chris Gotwalt and Russ Wolfinger, two of JMP’s (many) mixed models experts. They both praised her ability to get these updates done so quickly for JMP 17, and she said that she was glad to have a firm foundation to build upon with JMP’s existing mixed models code framework. Elizabeth notes that GLMMs have been requested at least as far back as JMP 7 in 2007 when a defect for "logistic regression with random effects" was entered. While this feature has been a long time coming for JMP customers, it comes just in time for the JMP life sciences team as they rework JMP Genomics and JMP Clinical as a JMP-only product.

JMP Development Updates
Data Discovery
- Xan: Adding six more dash line styles and getting line style drawing to better match on Mac and Win.

- Dan S: Fixed bugs and added support for new boxes in saved session / JMP Live / Project report windows. Added "Box Path" section to property panel to help scripters with xpath/subscript paths to change box properties programmatically. Working on stretching updates and helping JMP Clinical with filtering and report writing.
- Evan: Improvements to <
- Dave B: Fixed hex seg instability when cursor moves in and out of hover labels, fixed hex seg having incorrect hover label when run from a script, fixing pie seg selection problem with multiple y variables
DOE
- Caleb: Finished my 16.2 work and then enjoyed an anniversary “staycation” with my wife in Durham (7 years and counting :smiling_face_with_smiling_eyes:).
- Joseph: More work on Easy DOE. Added diagnostics, plus simulation support and the capability to load or enter response data. Also, fixed bugs and state transition issues for the design workflow tabs.
Host
- Michael H: Collaborated with Evan to modernize our 18 year old JMP “Taker” classes. This Confluence page has all the details and will soon include more usage examples. This is part of a larger ongoing effort to adopt modern C++ conventions in the JMP code base.
- Aaron: Pushed a large FileSpec change which I continue to maintain is an improvement despite ample evidence to the contrary. (If I broke your stuff, sorry; if I didn’t, consider yourself lucky). Continued work on the JmpLive publish dialog error state handling. Started in on JMPLive “download as project” bugs and enhancements.
- John Schroedl: Worked on feature to expand desired menu item (ala Help > [search] on Mac) for use by search bar. Fielded vari ous visual studio issues. Worked with MS developer to triage bug in SizeBench tool when run against JMP source. Debugged filespec issues such as “path too long”.
HTML5
- Josh M: Triaging profiler defects in support of Categorical Profilers. I thought I had a fix for JMPHTML-1219, but I discovered a blocking issue with the Match JSL operator which led to opening JMP-7579. John Sall put up a fix for JMP-3704, and I followed it up with an additional code change which is currently in review. Discussed violin plots with John Powell and resurrected an old prototype I built for contour plots several years ago which draws the segments using points exported from JMP (calculations aren’t needed). Reached out to a customer on the JMP Community with a question about Interactive HTML lines. Fixed JMPHTML-918 – Singleton points in the profiler are invisible.
- Bryan F: Fixed issue JMPHTML-1196 reported by Lafarge where markers were not given precedence over lines when using a rectangular selection. John and Josh provided valuable insight into the issue. Completed first iteration of HTML5 packed bars JMPHTML-607, uploaded for review, and submitted changes. This is the first HTML5 report type to support selection, tooltips, panning and zooming without exporting column data. Such an approach protects user’s data, provides reports that look and act more like JMP, and opens the door to performance that may surpass the current desktop experience. Had another knowledge transfer session with Praveena. After posting on LinkedIn about JMP Discovery Summit last week, I was contacted by a former Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA) representative about using DOE for blast tests and made a referral to Rob Lievense.
- John Powell: Continued working on Parallel Plot tooltips. Built some unit tests for Parallel Plot tooltips and fixed some bugs found in the process. Finished planning our current sprint. Documented the results of my investigation of feedback from Lafarge’s evaluation of JMP Live and discussed with Florence, Dan, Dieter, and Mia. Sent Dave B. some observations I made while working on Parallel Plots. Answered a JMP User Community question about outputting HTML from JMP 12.2.
- Mayowa: Added support for custom font size in label seg in interactive html (JMPHTML-1225, JMPHTML-1135), working on adding row labels to parallel plots (JMPHTML-1279)
JMP Live
- Aurora: Hierarchical Folders (preparatory work: disallow regeneration on a folder, remove obsolete notification type, remove "Allow Download?" control from folders, propose basic design for publish in a hierarchical context).
Statistics
- Elizabeth: I received a lot of great comments after my JMP Dev presentation on GLMMs. Thanks to everyone who attended and commented in the meeting or to me directly. I’m excited there’s so much excitement about the feature! Continued work on the multiple comparisons option in GLMMs to provide estimates of the probability or rate parameter and not just the linear predictor so saving to a table and creating a formula column won’t be necessary (unlike what I had to show in the demo).
- Laura C-S: Continued updating the SEM code. Found and fixed a crash when using a model shortcut in SEM with a sample covariance matrix that’s not positive definite. Watched some On Demand Discovery presentations.
- Peng: Test and polish the exponential path model in repeated measure degradation, work out a way to fit limited fatigue model for Bill Meeker.
Stat Documentation
- Colleen: Writing tests for screen shots and getting some input from other testers on how to go about doing it.
- Michael C: Doc updates in Fit Model, Proportional Hazards, and JSL Reference; added help keys for Reliability Forecast; tested rule set changes made by Acrolinx support team; reviewed remaining SEO suggestions from Susan.
Stat Testing
- Tonya: Creating reports of combined beta/crash/telemetry information for all of JMP 17 so far. Testing Type I Gauge. Bug verification.
- Mark: Finished my last year on the steering committee for the JMP Discovery Summit Americas last week. Working on design of Easy DOE with Brad and Joseph. Working on testing of Easy DOE with Jacob. Working on design and testing of dissolution curve analysis in Fit Curve with Jeremy.
- Fang: Verifying PLS fix in JMP 16.2. Responding to JMP 17 EA feedback. Investigating random crash in Model Screening involving in SVM. Unit test cleanup. Testing GLMM and verifying fixes.
- Jeremy: Got a prototype working for Randomized SVD in PCA and as a JSL built in. Now making a number of performance improvements. Attended a chemometrics conference (sciX) and presented a poster. The conference gave a good survey of how chemometrics is being used across industries, pharma especially. Verifying defects in 16.2 and giving my platforms a once over. Evaluating the wavelet models in FDE. On my own time I reviewed a paper for the Journal of Cheminformatics on using QSAR models to augment the data used for matched molecular pairs analysis.
- Jacob: Verifying DOE Jira issues for 16.2 and adding unit tests. Adding new unit tests for Missing Value Clustering and Multivariate RPCA Imputation. Testing a shelved build with a potential fix for JMP-7504.
Product Management
- Dan V: Worked with Dieter, Mia and John P to triage feedback from JMP Live customer: Lafarge. Lafarge has critical feedback on HTML5 report interactivity that we have partially addressed in JMP 17, should be able to address in future versions of JMP and might be able to address today with JSL mentoring. We will offer Lafarge an EA of JMP Live 17 as well for their feedback on what is already address in EA3 and will be addressed in EA4.
- Mia: Finalized the Single Source Document and EA3 videos, and worked with Landra to update the EA page. The email announcement for EA3 went out to customers on Wed, Oct 13, and we’ve had several customers join the program specifically to look at GLMM. Also, working with Dieter on a JMP Live EA for Crispr to look at font size customizations. Working with Julian, Ernest and Brady on the jsl prototype of Workflow Builder. getting feedback from internal and external customers on the potential name change of Design Space Profiler to Spec Limit Profiler. If you’ve got thoughts/suggestions, please complete this form: https://forms.office.com/r/RrFrXPhhnp
- Dieter: Did the JMP Live 17 EA installation for CRISPR. I ran into a few issues with the EA install that Eric addressed and we now a functioning JMP Live 17 site for them.
Development Operations
- Bob: Final work to get JMP 17 EA 3 pushed. Creation of JMP LIVE 17 EA 3 for Dieter. Clarified wording on updater page with web team to reduce customer confusion.
- Myron: Troubleshooting for MIF/PDF builds. Gathered details on Help and Crash servers in preparation for AWS testing.
- Nick: Tested Matlab with various MacOSX releases. Looked into CI and build failures.
Documentation
- Qiana: Met with Stat writers, Mike Muhlada, and attended group meetings with DevOps team. Continued JMP education by completing the New User Welcome Kit. Started the Manager onboarding process. Started installing tech writing software.
- Sheila: Prepared the Discovering JMP web pages for QA to verify. Accepted SEO changes from Susan and verified some changes in the help. Worked on a structure for new production process Jiras. Began testing the Chinese help build. Prepped FM files for the Friday help build. Started troubleshooting the help callout issue.

Note from Shannon
Thanks to Stephanie Mencia for passing along this cute Halloween comic! Just a few weeks left to get your costumes ready and do some testing!

Speaking of Halloween, John Schroedl’s family welcomed these adorable litter mates Tony and Hazel (pic) just in time for Halloween. I’m told they’re thinking Franken-Tony and Witch Hazel for costumes! Hope you all have a great weekend!
