Welcome to the JMP Development Update for October 1, 2021!
Our Marketing colleagues are asking us all to share on social media about what we see, attend, and learn at Discovery Summit next week. You can share on Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn or Instagram. It can be just text, or you can share both a screenshot and text (which is better!) It's critical to have a variety of voices, images and experiences shared.
Very important: Use the hashtag #JMPDiscoverySummit because Arati Mejdal will be monitoring the hashtag and re-sharing from JMP accounts. Plus: You may selected to receive some JMP swag!
Thanks to all who attended John Sall’s practice for his Discovery plenary at this Thursday’s dev meeting. John appreciated your comments and continued feedback as he prepares to give the talk live next week.
As you know, we will be creating JMP 17 EA3 to match this evening’s build. Please update your feature pages by October 4, and create any EA3 videos by October 6. Approval Mode for JMP 16.2 begins on October 12 so please continue to review your lists of items open in that track to determine if they can be safely fixed for our final JMP 16 maintenance release.
Next week JMP DevOps is excited to welcome Qiana Eaglin as the manager of the JMP documentation team. Susan C and Sheila will report to her, and Qiana will also collaborate with product managment and writers on the statistical and life sciences documentation teams to make sure customers get the information they need to get the most out of our products. Qiana has been working at SAS for 8 years as a senior technical writer and prior to that, worked in technical writing positions at Ateb, DataFlux, and IBM. Before becoming a technical writer, she held positions in software testing and project management. If you happen to see Qiana at Discovery sessions, please give her a warm welcome!
Hope you saw this article on Inside JMP highlighting the JMP JSL unit test framework. Thanks to Jessica Marquardt for working with Joseph, Audrey and Nicole to highlight the history of this important tool, even as we move ahead with enhancements to the framework and how we use it to monitor regressions during JMP development.
Thanks to Tonya for sharing this week’s Beta/Crash/Telemetry tracks with crashes selected. You can find the JMP Live report here: Beta/Crash/Telemetry tracks for the week of 10/1/2021 | JMP Live (sas.com).

JMP Development Updates
HTML5
- This week, Bryan and Mayowa conducted whitebox testing for the HTML5 team. They covered a wide array of features and graphics segments with a focus on features we updated in the past few sprints. They created a total of:
- 19 bugs (1 Critical, 4 Major, 8 Normal, 6 Minor)
- 4 bug subtasks (3 Major, 1 Normal)
- 1 improvement (Normal)
- 1 story(Normal)
- Last week, Praveena, Josh and John Powell conducted whitebox testing for the HTML5 team. They covered a wide array of features and graphics segments with a focus on features we updated in the past few sprints. They created a total of:
- 11 new bugs for JMPHTML (3 Major, 7 Normal, 1 Minor) and 1 new Minor bug for JMP
- one additional test case for an existing JMPHTML bug
- 2 stories for JMPHTML
- John Powell: Summarized whitebox testing results. Held end of sprint meetings and prepared for JMP Discovery and EA3. Helped with a couple of support issues for JMP Live. Helped Praveena with her first HTML5 bug fix, code review, and Perforce submission. Built this Confluence page to collect a list of tools used by the Host Group. Submitted unit tests and code to support drawing Graph Builder Parallel Plots. Working on implementing tooltips for HTML parallel plots. Here’s Julian’s String Theories Parallel Plot from JMP Public rendered in Windows 10 (left) and in Chrome (right):

- Josh M: Entered JIRAs from last week’s whitebox testing (3 normal and 3 major priority for HTML5, 1 normal priority for JMP). JMPHTML-682: Profiler does not preserve state when interacting with the server on JMP Live. Investigated issue for Mike Anderson involving embedding JMP Public posts in a webpage slide deck. Prepared for and gave Sprint 5 demo. Updated management on profiler status. Mia is following up on some items blocked by desktop work. Helping Praveena get up to speed on creating unit test cases and fixing a line bug. Backlog JIRA triaging.
- Bryan F: Continued testing and developing unit tests for the HTML5 implementation of packed bar charts. Participated in a white-box test and found and entered 19 issues: 14 bugs, 4 bug subtasks, and 1 improvement. Participated in a sprint review where I presented improvements I made to the build system as well as the work I did to develop packed bar charts. For example, I showed an interactive case where a graph representing a million rows was responsive to selections, tooltips, scaling and panning.
- Mayowa: Worked on adding reference lines to parallel axis plots in interactive html, did whitebox testing, participated in the HTML5 team retrospective and sprint planning.
- Praveena: Learned about Perforce process from team members. Fixed the bug JMPHTML-1223 ( "null" displayed in tooltip msg), started looking into JMPHTML-1198 (Unselected lines don't match JMP with a dark background).
JMP Live
- Michael G: Enabled multi-selection of reports in every expected context. Allows you to select and move multiple posts to a new space / folder. Added ability to edit details about a space. Merged standalone package folder view into space folder view. General bug-fixing around new space features.
- Aurora: Hierarchical Folders (preperatory work: yank special privileges from folder owners, simplify folder-related queries). Audit Log (add records for granting & revoking access to a space). Control Chart Warnings (bug fix). Automated tests (fix some, tag some with Jira numbers).
Statistics
- Laura C-S: Continued working on swapping old for new SEM code. Answered a few questions about SEM in the JMP community and through email. Met with James to continue working on a “bread making” example with SEM.
- Peng: Testing and fixing minor issues in repeated measure degradation before the EA cut. Also fixing a couple of bugs in time series due to recent work.
- Elizabeth: Fixed final GLMM bugsbefore the EA. One large-ish project remains (Multiple Comparisons on the proper scale). Started preparing JMP Dev presentation on GLMMs.
- Annie: Finished integrating the last of my fixes for control charts into 16.2.
Stat Testing
- Mark: Evaluate design of Easy DOE and develop unit tests for it. Support for other DOE projects. Judge student posters for JMP Discovery Summit and perform other duties as a Steering Committee member for next week. Support work on analysis of dissolution curves in Fit Curve. Met with ASQ editor about my initial comments for the revision of the DOE material in the Handbook for Six Sigma Black Belt certification.
- Jacob: Adding unit tests for the new MSA Design diagnostics. Testing Missing Value Snapshot (JMP-5330 and JMP-7225). Testing Design Explorer. Verifying DOE Jira issues and adding unit tests
- Tonya: Testing Laura’s new MSA changes. Viewing JMP Discovery papers and talks.
Life Sciences Updates
- John C: In JMP Clinical 8.2, reworked Create Live Report for Patient Profiler to support customers using JMP Live 16. In JMP Genomics 10.2, updated documentation paths for help buttons. In JMP Clinical 17, fixed a bug that prevented Review Builder from reopening in the same session if it was previously closed through JMP Main Menu > Window > Close All. Added a mode to ComboBoxClass:setAvailableValues() to allow selections to be maintained by position rather than string value, which is used by the Set Study Preferences’ Demographic Grouping widget. Created ProcessClass:makeOutline() to make outlineboxes whose open state is tracked similarly to other widgets’ values (with review templates, study preferences, and factory defaults), which is currently used in the Set Study Preferences UI but could be extended to reports. Updated Set Value Color to assign the default gray color override by default to any chosen treatment control level. Converted .sas7bdat metadata paths and references to .jmp.
Product Management
- Dieter: Attended 2 AWS webinars and working on running JMP PV on AWS AppStream and Azure Virtual Desktop.
Technical Support

Development Operations
- Bob: Worked with Curt and Mia on Student Subscription issue. Opened ServiceNow ticket to correct mistake of serial numbers being sent as "A" and not "B". Finished work of getting remaining support files for installers all secured into Perforce.
Documentation
- Sheila: Worked on the localized DJ web pages after getting reviewer feedback. Tested adding the Genomics Marker Statistics doc to the help. Verified SEO updates. Generated the 16.0 and 16.1 help.
System/Host Testing-Cary
- Audrey: Demo for QA team about upcoming changes to the JSL Unit Test Framework. Touch base with Beijing testers before their National Day holiday begins – they will be out of the office until Oct 7.
- Nick H: Have been working with Justin to familiarize myself with the JMP Unit Testing Framework and Dashboard so I can begin to take over support for these items. Though there is still much to learn, together we have worked to close out some bugs in both the dashboard and framework. Recently I began preparing the testing framework for upcoming changes to the unit test streams to add a rapid test stream to the already existing stress tests. Notably, developers will be able to run “super”Baseline tests which will not only include existing baseline tests but also a subset of “rapid” tests. SuperBaseline tests will be run from a button added to the JSL Unit Testing GUI. This will hopefully provide a larger subset of tests for developers to execute when they want to run more than just baseline tests.
- Mandy: verifying defects, and writing a few tests; working on a few TS tracks and reporting JIRA tickets; working on defects you sent me to verify that they might be fixed and closing them. Table shaper is about as ready as it can be for JMP17EA3 – until we get some feedback and find out what direction it will go from here. A few esthetic thing in there, like the Recode drawing part, but not fixing it until we find out what is needed.
- Hunter: Investigated JMP 17 EA 2 tracks, installed and tested with Monterey Dev. Beta 8, found issue where JMP 17 installer on Mojave did not warn as being unsupported, tested candidate fix in projects for an MFI crash, and defect verification.
- Josh L: JMP Live Jira testing and Bug verification. JMP 16.2 and 17.0 regression testing. Updating and improving my JSL test scripts. General deployment question and machine updating questions.
