Welcome to the JMP Development Update for September 24, 2021!
We have just over a week before we will freeze for JMP 17 EA3. Please update your feature pages in Confluence by October 4 (tagging items in your Motivation and Summary section with “EA3”) and complete your videos by October 6. The first week of October will be a busy week with JMP Discovery Summit ongoing. Thank you for signing up to staff Meet the Experts! Maanasa sent out invites for those sessions, so please let her know if you didn’t get one.
Please make sure to tend to your 16.2 strings ASAP. You will have a final chance to review string reports for this weekend’s Stringbot run and make any updates needed prior to our 16.2 UI string handoff.
Congratulations to Ryan Lekivetz, Caleb King, Joseph Morgan, and Brad Jones on another DOE group patent! The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office issued their patent titled Tool for Optimal Supersaturated Designs on 2021-09-21 as U.S. Patent No. 11,125,655.
Thanks very much to Luciano Silva for demoing the new Marker Statistics platform at this week’s JMP Dev meeting. If you missed the meeting, you can access the recording here. Luciano shared this link to the introductory short genetics video he tried to run in the dev meeting yesterday. (For future reference, Elizabeth Claassen passed along the tip that to share audio from a video playing on your computer, it’s necessary to use the option to share your computer audio when sharing from Teams.)
Thanks very much to Tonya for sharing this week’s details on Beta/Crash/Telemetry tracks with crashes selected. You can find the JMP Live version here: Beta/Crash/Telemetry Tracks for the week of 9/24/2021 | JMP Live (sas.com).

JMP Development Updates
Host
- Paul N: Making progress setting up activation services on AWS to use AWS’s lambda functions - rewriting Perl and PHP and implementing the code in Python in a Lambda function. Set up a clone of the current activation environment on an EC2 Linux instance and tested the functionality by opening up the http port for only my SAS desktop machine. From that machine, I can run the full activation functionality on the EC2 instance. Most of the technical issues including serverless interaction with the database through Lambda functions have been addressed. This does yet solve the user authentication needed for access to the SAS only internal web pages – for tech support, serial number generation, and marketing’s access to the activation DB. Nor does it yet address restricting access to activation based on geographic restrictions for listed countries. That functionality we currently get for free sitting behind SAS’s servers. Daniel is looking into that functionality by setting up the pages in AWS’s CloudFront. Our efforts now are primarily focused on securing activation if it’s hosted up on AWS.
HTML5
- Bryan F: Adding unit and system tests for packed bars. Documenting HTML5 implementation of packed bars. Evaluated and provided feedback on regression tests that Anna Kushner created for packed bars (thanks, Anna!). Optimized packed bars by caching data used for drawing. Continued testing resiliency of HTML5 build system. Helped track down bug in system tests related to exporting JMP font sizes to HTML5. Provided input for and feedback on this week’s white-boxing testing of HTML5.
- Praveena: Continued the learning with team members, attended the virtual new hire orientation. Conducted Whitebox testing and logged some defects. Currently looking into one of the defects logged as part of Whitebox testing JMPHTML-1223.
- Mayowa: Worked on supporting custom label font sizes in interactive html for treemaps (JMPHTML-1124), bubble plots (JMPHTML-1125) and annotations (JMPHTML-1130). Changed label formatting and precision in interactive html for bar charts to match JMP.
JMP Live
- Eric H: Working on options for how data is handled when publishing to JMP Live 17.0. JMP Live 17.0 will have more options when publishing, such as using data that is already on JMP Live.
- Aurora: Data Posts (cascade publish-time "Allow Download?" choice to all consumed data posts, update an error message). Post Lists (remove some obsolete options in preparation for 17.0 changes). Spaces (disallow discoverability of personal spaces on JMP Public, notify only those users with space-specific allow_admin regarding space join requests). Access Control (short circuit access control logic based on ALLOW_ANONYMOUS_ACCESS as a safety backstop). More intro to GraphQL training.
Statistics
- John Sall:
- Hierarchical Cluster's Clustering Criterion now works for large problems, using Randomized SVD. (JMP-7058) Make multiple-level Progress Bar for Hybrid Ward. Move randomSVD routine to zx.cpp, zx.h. Work on keynote.
- Radio Buttons in JMP now support tips. Any radio buttons you have in dialogs that could use more description on what they mean should now use tips to provide that extra information. See radioBoxSetTips in display.h for how to use this feature.

- Laura C-S: Enjoyed meeting up with Annie to do some trash clean up in Chapel Hill!
Continued working on swapping internal SEM numerics. Met with James to go over survey responses from SEs meant to help us come up with a generic industry SEM example. Worked on a new Model Shortcut for multivariate latent growth curves. I also received news that a book for which I contributed a chapter highlighting JMP’s PCA and MFA platforms is finally in print!

- Peng: Testing, fixing, and making changes to Repeated Measure Degradation. Also fixing recently reported issues.
- Jianfeng: Triaging and fixing my old defects and pushed all my JMP 16.2 changes. I have managed to reduce my defect counts by 50 percent! Once I finish the cleaning up work, I will resume the work of equivalence test for binomial proportion.
Stat Documentation
- Michael C: Responded to a comment on a blog post based on my 2012 Discovery presentation. Request was for the script used for the graphics in the post, which needed some minor changes to run in current versions of JMP.
Continued work on Scripting Index updates for stat platforms with Colleen (Jira epic JMP-3281).
- Colleen: Working on updating the scripting index (descriptions, prototypes, examples, help keys) for the following platforms: Model Comparison (JMP-6962), Process History Explorer (JMP-6963), Explore Missing Values (JMP-6957), and Explore Patterns (JMP-6958). Documenting new models in Fit Curve.
Stat Testing
- Jeremy: Helping Jianfeng with defect clean up in principal components, multivariate, and MDMCC. Evaluating the wavelet models in FDE. Working on the extrapolation control paper. Submitted a poster and virtual presentation on spectral data analysis in JMP to a chemometrics conference called scix. Also, Jackie and I finally submitted a paper on my final dissertation chapter to JASA. It is on inferential procedures for lift curves at extremely small testing fractions, which is relevant to drug discovery. The paper is on arxiv here. Fingers crossed!
- Tonya: Testing Laura’s new MSA changes, bug verification and unit test cleanup.
- Jacob: Testing the design diagnostics in MSA Design. Testing Explore Missing Values and writing new tests for Missing Value Snapshot.
Life Sciences Updates
- Anisa: Worked with Shannon on moving JMP Clinical defects to Jira.
Product Management
- Mia: Compiling information on the Feature Pages in the Single Source Document in preparation for EA3. If you haven’t already, please update your feature pages by Oct 4, and send Mia videos by Oct 6. Follow-up meetings/discussions about “Workflow Builder” (the feature formerly known as Table Shaper). See this page for the current status of this feature. Hosted a lively discussion led by Evan on a new feature under development, “Search Bar”. Preparing for various Discovery US activities, and lots of meetings (with Curt and Julian about the next steps for the JMP Student Subscription, with Chris and Dan to talk about the status of features in EA3, …).
Technical Support

Development Operations
- Jim: Working with Kimi to get Python issues resolved on multiple unit test machines. Continuing to work with Audrey on the rebalancing of JMP UT runs across operating systems (including setup of Intel-based Monterey machine for JMP Pro 17).
Documentation
- Susan C: Reviewing SEO updates. I also generated the help today for our Friday build.
System/Host Testing-Cary
- Mike M: Ported Sikuli test env over to Azure with much help from Evan and Josh (thanks, gents!). The latest version of Sikuli won’t run with our testbench, so we’ve temporarily loaded the older version to get it running on Azure. We also found out that we can’t change the display resolution on these VMs, which is causing some tests to fail. Josh has an open ServiceNow ticket to allow us to control that. Found several issues with bar labels in HTML5. Also found an interactive Hierarchical Clustering bug when a Sikuli test failed.
- Mandy: Worked mostly on table shaper stuff, trying to ensure some changes are okay for JMP17EA3. Wrote a few more tests for Tabulate packed analysis columns. Will write up details for EA3 and maybe do a short video
- Hui: Helped investigate JMP17 EA journal issue. Worked on verification of tooltip on HTML5 categorical profiler. Reported 6 issues while testing. Continued working on testing scenarios for HTML5 parallel plot. Thanks to John Powell for sharing his test cases when working on the new feature!
- Lisa: Testing the new hashed bands error bar style and new options in the Customize dialog to hide points with missing color or missing size values.
- Josh L: JMP Live Jira testing and Bug verification. Had a few server issues this week around access to and from Azure that have been resolved. Added some more features to the JMP Live Daily deployment script. It now emails users when the latest build has been installed.
