Owens Corning Composite Material (01FEB2021 – China East T1)
The world's leading manufacturer of fiberglass composites, Owens Corning, was formed in 1935 with the merger of two prominent American glassworks. Recognized as a Fortune 500 company every year since the list was created in 1955, Owens Corning expanded into the Asia Pacific region in the early 1990s, where it now operates multiple manufacturing facilities and a science and technology innovation center.
When JMP China East Team 1 first approached the R&D department, they learned that the company was struggling with the high cost of experimentation. Scientists shared that with the very limited capabilities in Excel, they were constrained to one-factor-at-a-time approaches. The absence of appropriate analytic tools, they explained, was causing the company significant losses in both money and time.
The JMP team presented a demo to key stakeholders covering DOE functionality, including definitive screening designs, custom designs and traditional methods. By demonstrating how JMP could help scientists improve process flow – and how easy it was to use and automate, particularly with Graph Builder – they sold nine JMP licenses to the R&D department with more licenses for the quality department on the horizon.
