Searching in the Community
The Search Bar: It’s more than it seems.
When you type a search query, you’ll get the top results in a dropdown, and if the search query is relevant to a particular Place, like a Category page, or a Blog, for example, you’ll see those results first under Places, and the Post results after that under Posts.
If JMP staff have a recommended result for your search term, you’ll see that first with the “recommended” indicator . The recommended results are not affected by your search filter selections, which we’ll cover in a moment. These may not be in the filtered set you’ve specified, but they will show up as the first results regardless.
Using the dropdown filter on the right of the search bar focus your searches to the entire Community, within a particular Category, board, Knowledge Base, by Username, or in your Private Messages. The list options can change according to what part of the community you’re in.
The dropdown list shows the icon indicating the post location (such as category, blog, knowledgebase, etc), the title, a summary, number of comments, date, and for clarity, the post location written out.
If none of the top results are what you’re looking for, just hit Enter (or click on the magnifying glass), and you’ll be taken to the Search page
The search results page has tabs to focus the search on Posts, Users, Private Messages, or Places;
In the posts section, there are drop-down filters to filter by Location, Author, Date, Metadata, Type of Post, or whether it Contains images, videos, or attachments.
The Advanced Search tool that allows you to view results by Topics or Posts, limit how many results you see, and show only Topics with no replies.
Additionally, the Search Options red triangle dropdown gives you the option to Subscribe to the RSS feed for this search or turn on batch processing features, if you have permissions for that.
Current filters are shown below the main dropdowns, and they can be removed by clicking the X next to them. Again, the recommended posts will always show up first, even if they’re not in the filter parameters.
On the Search page listing, you’ll also be able to see the author, post location, date of publishing, the number of Kudos the post has gotten, any Tags and Labels associated with each listing, and any attachments the post has. Clicking on the tags or labels will give you a list of all the posts that have the same tag or label within the current section of the Community that you’re in.
With the Sorted By red triangle dropdown, you are also able to sort by Best Match, Date, Number of Views, Number of Kudos, and Number of Replies.
Finally, if there’s more than one page of results, you see the pagination on the bottom right of the listing page.
And that’s everything you need to know about Search!
Excellent job in the production! You capture all the various features. I'm not wondering if we cover too many. Maybe two videos - a simplified and in-depth versions?
I would suggest we scope it to the following:
- Mention the Recommended results
- Scoping the search (and why you would want to scope - an example showing the difference might be good)
- Mentions adding/removing filters on search results (and why you would want to do that)
I would be interested to know what others think.
I'm open to either, but from a personal preference, I like short videos that are more thorough like this.
