And the award goes to…Congratulations to our very own Distinguished Research Fellow, Dr. Bradley Jones (@bradleyjones), for winning a distinguished honor: the 2021 William G. Hunter Award, given by the Statistics Division of the American Society for Quality (ASQ).
“Of course, we know Brad as a real pioneer in design of experiments and the head of our DOE group and a long career of inventions,” John Sall (@John_Sall) explained at today’s development meeting.
“He pretty much invented the modern era of design of experiments, beginning with Bayesian optimal designs, and then all the research into split-plot designs with Peter Goos. And more recently the alias optimal, which led to the definitive screening design and the group orthogonal supersaturated designs (GO-SSDs) that are a recent addition.”
The award was established in honor of William G. Hunter, co-author of Statistics for Experimenters, the classic work that scientists and engineers have been using since the ‘70s. Hunter taught with George Box at University of Wisconsin and was the founding chair of the ASQ Statistics Division.
The award goes to a person whose qualities mirror those of Hunter, including substantial contributions to statistical consulting, education for practitioners and integration of statistics with other disciplines, as well as demonstrated actions in communications and implementing innovative statistical methods.
