Welcome to the JMP Development Update for August 20, 2021!
JMP 17 EA2 installers are available to customers and program members received an email Thursday morning about the new release, so we expect to start seeing more feedback flowing through the system soon. The product management team has also sent reminder emails to previously invited customers who have not yet requested access. You can always find more details on the JMP 17 EA Program confluence page, including log-in information (for jmp.com/earlyadopter), access to EA videos and a JMP Live report of current EA program members.
The DOE team had a lot of good news this week! First of all, Brad Jones was honored with the William G. Hunter Award, named for the founding chair of the ASQ Statistics Division. The award is given annually to honor someone who exemplifies Hunter’s dedication to statistics. According to the ASQ website, which also includes a list of the prior winners, “This includes substantial contributions to statistical consulting, education for practitioners, and integration of statistics with other disciplines as well as demonstrated excellence in communication and implementing innovative applied statistical methods.” Brad, big congratulations on this honor!
Two patents were also recently issued to the DOE team. A patent entitled “Tool for Hyperparameter Validation” was issued on 2021-07-27 as U.S. Patent No. 11,074,483. And a second one entitled “Tool For Designed Experiments With Uncontrolled Factors” was issued on 2021-08-10 as U.S. Patent No. 11,087,033. Last but not least, Ryan and Joseph completed the final proof of their paper titled “On the testing of statistical software” for the Journal of Statistical Theory and Practice today. They received word of the paper’s acceptance on 7/30 and are looking forward to seeing it appear in an upcoming special issue on the “State of the art in research on design and analysis of experiments.” Congratulations, all, in recognition of these achievements!
In addition to recognizing awards and achievements, we have welcomes to say this week! I know we were all thrilled to see Jeff Perkinson’s announcement that the JMP Tech Support division in Cary led by Duane Hayes is joining the JMP Customer Care group! Development works closely with all members of Duane’s team and we greatly appreciate all the work they do to assist our customers with issues they encounter when using JMP. Tech Support is an important conduit for user suggestions and bug reports, and I appreciate their tireless support and encouragement to customers to update to a more recent version of JMP. Welcome to the division, all!
Also this week, Nicole welcomed David Elsheimer to the Stat Development Team as a Graduate Research Assistant. David is currently pursuing a PhD in Statistics from NCSU and received his Master’s of Statistics in December 2020. His research interests are Statistical Computing and numerical methods. He is currently under the advisement of Dr. Wenbin Lu. Nicole and David worked this week to get his machine set up and get him acquainted with the various tools he’ll need as he gets familiar with JMP. Welcome, David!
Thanks very much to product management and sales for presenting at this week’s JMP Dev meeting! This joint presentation by Dan V, Juliette Plager, Jeff Upton and Keith Blake helped us all understand better the preparation process JMP teams go through prior to meeting with their customers. It also showcased how our newest product JMP Live is being incorporated into sales presentations about the JMP workflow and JMP family of products. If you missed the meeting, you can find a recording here.
Thanks very much to Tonya for keeping us updated on this week’s Beta/Crash/Telemetry tracks with crashes selected. You can find the JMP Live report here: Beta/Crash/Telemetry tracks for the week of 8/20/2021 | JMP Live (sas.com)

General Announcements
- Jessica Marquardt asked me to spread the word that there will be an Everyday DOE social hour at Discovery: “Do you use DOE for a personal project or passion? We’re hosting a Discovery Summit Americas social hour focused on the topic. The conversation will be about running DOEs for things like serving chocolate chip cookies, for making cold-brew coffee, for hard boiling eggs, etc. For example, do you remember reading how DOE came to this JMP user’s rescue when her baby wasn’t sleeping well? If you do anything with DOE for fun or as a life hack, send Jessica Marquardt a note.”
Important Upcoming Dates
- JMP 17.0 EA3 – 10/1/21
- JMP 17.0 EA4 – 11/5/21
- Please visit Confluence for a full list of JMP 16 and JMP 17 dates.
JMP Development Updates
Product Management
- Stephanie: Attended a virtual UX conference a couple of week ago and summarized my notes on each talk I attended on this confluence page. Added a link to the talk itself as well. There were some great talks that I thought might be of interest to the whole team-hope you enjoy them!
- Dan V: Working with John Sieman, Michael, Roger and John on adding JMP features protected by patents information to jmp.com and About JMP for JMP 17. The patent listing for JMP 16 is now listed on jmp.com at jmp.com/patents. This page will be updated for JMP 17 and will be also accessible directly from About JMP.
Technical Support
- This has been an exciting week for JMP Technical Support. In case there is anyone that hasn’t heard, Technical Support is moving to Customer Care!
- As per usual, here are the TS JMP Live reports (JMP Live 16). Here is information regarding Customer Reported Bugs filed by TS (in Jira).
- Note from Shannon: I filtered one of the JMP Live reports from the first link above to show weekly non-trial, non-crash tracks by version. It clearly shows a declining trend in tracks per week involving JMP 15.X. It’s excellent to see so many customers working with JMP TS to get JMP 16 and use it! Thanks so much to our excellent JMP TS team and welcome to Customer Care!

The issue was a warning on import of the package that importing an additional package would improve performance. JMP treated the warning as an error, which aborted the script. Updated code to ensure that the warning goes to the log and is not treated as an error. The user resolved the issue by installing the additional package. Fixed JMP Python issue JMP-740 for JMP 16.2. Note from Shannon
Thanks to John for sending this video link to the amazing drone display at the closing ceremonies of the Olympics! It is truly spectacular.
I hope you all have a wonderful weekend! Special best of luck to all the parents out there who have kids resuming in-person school next week. I know many of us are anxiously waiting on emergency use authorization for the under-12 crowd as we mask up our children and send them back to the classroom. As I keep telling my 9 year old, this new school year is unprecedented in all of modern history-we’ve never had this number of kids who are new to schools or have not been in the building in recent memory. It’s OK for us and for them to feel anxiety and frustration and hope all at once. Please know, you’re not alone in having mixed emotions, no matter what your school situation might be this fall.
Emergency vaccine approval for kids can’t come fast enough!
