Welcome to the JMP Development Update for August 13, 2021!
The #30 China R&D Newsletter has been released, and one of the articles features JMP’s own Nala Sun discussing the Automation Framework of JSL Unit Tests in the CRD JMP team. Also featured is the great news that JMP Test Engineer Eric Wang won a 3C Award (for Collaboration, Communication and Consistency) in 2020. Congratulations, Nala and Eric, and thank you for highlighting the excellent work our CRD JMP testing team is doing!
JMP 17 EA2 installers were made available to our early adopter customers this week. Product management will soon send out an email announcement to customers to direct them to EA2 details on the web page and new videos that showcase features added or updated since our initial EA1 iteration. Although we are still early in the cycle, we are getting great feedback from both internal and external users! JMP 16.1 updaters are also available to customers and we are eagerly awaiting the 16.1 full installer release planned for 8/24/21. Thank you so much for all the fixes and improvements made in 16.1 and the continued work on fixes for 16.2!
Thanks to Bryan Fricke and Michael Goff for demoing Dark Mode progress for HTML5 and JMP Live at this week’s JMP Dev meeting! Bryan also shared other improvements made this cycle for HTML5 including panning and zooming and graph resizing (among others). If you missed the presentation, you can see a recording here. Bryan had some internet slowness during his presentation so he went the extra mile and created a second recording of his demo that you can find here. (Please note-if you click the link and do not have access, Bryan should be able to grant it to you to view.)
Thanks to Tonya for sharing the details of the Beta/Crash/Telemetry tracks for the last 2 weeks with crashes selected. You can find the JMP Live report here.

General Announcements
- Xan has been working on a Ghostbusters page in Confluence-you can find a rough draft here. It’s more of a “Who You Gonna Call?” page (as opposed to something scary like a giant marshmallow person). It outlines various areas of support and who’s responsible for them on his team. Check it out!
- If you’re willing to be a featured employee on Inside JMP, please download a copy of the Get to Know form. Simply fill out the questions and when you’re done, upload it, along with 3 photos of you to the folder. Thank you for helping to make our JMP family a little more familiar!
Important Upcoming Dates
- JMP 17.0 EA2 – 8/3/21

JMP Development Updates
Host
- Michael H: Got menu life cycle icons working on the Mac. Go to JMP > Preferences > Menu and try different settings for the two “Mark Menu Items” options at the bottom. Revamped check box and radio box host controls on Mac, in preparation for multi-column checkboxes, and to remove dependency on a deprecated Cocoa class. Added code to look for the PPTX template file in multiple locations so a Mac JMP user can provide their own template to override the one embedded in the JMP bundle. Fixed a crash (16.2) with exporting an empty journal as PDF.
- John Schroedl: Crash investigations. Debugged scrolling issue in enhanced log. Fix menu editor issue which led to inability to edit toolbars. Started search toolbar for experiment with Evan.
- Brian C: Added ability to open selected members in SAS Transport files and honor labels for column names. Enhanced Excel Wizard to allow columns to be changed from Numeric to Character in the preview window.
- Paul N: Pushed change on Tuesday to switch from pThreads to C++ Threading on macOS. Fixed JMP-5917 python << get() crashes JMP. Revisiting JMP-740 – scipy fails to load with JMP 16, 17 when paired with Python 3.7. It works with Python 3.8 or Python 3.9 so there is a workaround, upgrade to Python 3.8 or greater. Two of the 4 Python packages depends on are now available on Apple Silicon. Both numpy and pandas are installable, which are by far the 2 most important of the 4 we try to bring in. Matplotlib and scipy still do not have ARM versions. Working with Daniel on getting familiar with the activation system and working on updates for JMP 17.
- Paul T: Converted S1365464 - CRP: Remove semicolon JMP places in code for OSISOFT PI to a Jira issue, JMP-5783: OsiSoft Pi (OSIPI) Data Import. Changed OSIPI JSL generation to use a simpler model, switched to non-modal window for Modify action, and recorded demo video for EAs. Fixed various database and import related defects:
- S1291478 - JMP Query Builder does not handle two data tables whose names differ only by whitespace
- S1395989 - Address Sanitizer exception on Quit after running tests/Functions/testOpen.jsl
- S1458534 - CRP: Open Table does not quote identifiers in SQL when executing SQL from DB2.
- S1588998 - CRP: Execute SQL performance is better in JMP 15.2 than JMP 16.
- S0972100 - Loading SAS extended attributes via TK is prohibitively slow
HTML5
- John Powell: Studied the implementation details of the Parallel Plot and discussed them with David Barbour. Requested details on the requirements for the Interactive HTML version Parallel Plot. Held a Sprint Review meeting and Sprint Retrospective meeting. Discussed priorities for our next Sprint with Brian C. Demonstrated JMP Live’s Best Performance publishing option at the JMP Dev meeting. Participated in another full Interview for our JavaScript Software Developer position. Helped Mayowa reduce future defects and asked Shannon to convert remaining defects to Jira.
- Mayowa: Worked on adding support for heatmap label font size customization to interactive html (JMPHTML-1123), adding support for Max label size control panel setting to interactive html (JMPHTML-1170).
- Tommy: Working on font size customization for tables for HTML5.
- Bryan F: Completed the initial pass at JMPHTML-803 which relates to the HTML5 frame and scroll box resizing capability. Prepared and delivered a presentation on recent additions to Interactive HTML at the JMP Dev meeting. Since my internet was on the fritz, I rerecorded the presentation which can be found here. Made some updates to the Confidence Curve add-in that I hope to make available in the near future. Participated in an interview for a Javascript Developer position and provided written and verbal feedback to the team and written feedback to HR. Gave a demonstration of the legend selection and resizing capability at the HTML5 Sprint 4 Review and provided feedback at the HTML5 Sprint Retrospective.
JMP Live
- Michael G: Dark mode dev demo. Pushed out update to manage data page with the new data posts. Pushed out update to “file browser” on the space page. The files space now has a folder tree and file list to browse the packages within a space. Listing the admin user and groups in a space’s details section.
- Aurora: JMP Live 17.0 - Spaces (reworking control chart warning feature for spaces, new method to find users & groups who can admin a space), Data Posts (bug fixing).
- Tommy: Finished up working on the report optimization setting for JMP Live.
Statistics
- Peng: Continued working on repeated measure degradation. Completed a 1st order Kinetics model and continued polishing distribution and quantile profilers and scripting within the platform.
- John Sall: Working on ideas to speed up hierarchical clustering--only incremental speedup so far (JMP-3316).
- Annie: Pushed the first change to add a label role to CCB, worked on fixing some existing defects and more defect triage.
Stat Testing
- Fang: Bug verifications in JMP 16.2 and JMP 17. Unit tests clean-up. Adding unit tests for variance ratio and percent total variance columns in Fit Mixed. Initial testing of GLMM with binomial distribution.

Note from Shannon
Thanks to John Sall who shared a link to a drone video from Olympics ceremonies! That particular video was no longer available, but I did find this one of the drones forming the Olympics rings here on YouTube. I also enjoyed this “software bug Olympics” comic below (from here). Hope you all enjoy your weekend!
