Wella International (May 2021 – DACH T2)
Major European hair care company Wella International recently signed a new multi-entity contract with JMP, covering 43 users across Germany, Singapore and the US. Headquartered in Geneva, Wella has been in operation for more than 140 years and has a global presence in nearly 100 countries. Acquired by P&G in 2003, Wella became a subsidiary of Coty in 2015.
Having used JMP for several years as part of parent company Coty's global contract, scientists at Wella had come to rely on the tool for a range of R&D activities. But when the COVID-19 pandemic caused a slump in beauty sales and Coty announced its divestiture of Wella, longtime JMP users had to react quickly to secure management approval to retain their licenses. Various business and financial discussions took place in the wake of the divestiture announcement, involving stakeholders from Wella's Legal, R&D and Procurement departments.
All options were on the table – including both local licensing and the possibility of a multi-entity contract – and the JMP team prepared quotes to help stakeholders make an informed comparison. Discussions got off to a rocky start, as Wella's representatives were used to paying yearly renewal fees and a new multi-entity contract would mean paying for first year fees again.
However, JMP and Wella came to the joint conclusion that a multi-entity contract would be the best, most forward-looking option. Under their new agreement, Wella can easily add new legal entities to the existing contract – a level of flexibility that had been a top priority for the company's internal stakeholders. Simone Raab credits Carol Gretz and Rachel Smith for their expertise in setting up Wella's new multi-entity agreement, as well as Katja Grütter, who helped negotiate licensing operations in Switzerland.
