Welcome to the JMP Development Update for August 5, 2021!
Thanks to everyone for all the work on JMP 17 feature pages in preparation for EA2! The EA2 installers are now ready for testing and we expect to be able to make them available to customers within a week or so. It’s excellent to have so many new features and fixes to share with customers since our first iteration, and we’re all looking forward to hearing feedback as customers begin to update.
Please remember that Mia is often requesting status on ongoing JMP 17 projects through comments on their feature pages, so please keep an eye out for those comments and respond to her requests for updates.
Audrey shared the following update to mark the end of the SAS summer internship program: ”JMP welcomed eight interns this summer, and based on the presentations we saw yesterday (recording here), I think we all got a good deal out of it. The interns had a great experience and interesting projects, while we in JMP benefitted from these talented young people. While we say a fond goodbye to some of them, a few will continue to work part time with JMP throughout the school year. Best of luck to all of you as you return to your studies!”
Thanks very much again to our interns who presented yesterday, and of course also to Audrey for doing such an amazing job coordinating the JMP intern program! These past two years of summer internships have had the added challenge of being virtual, but Audrey has handled the transition so well, continuing the tradition of JMP intern shared training and keeping everyone in touch throughout.
The summer interns this year made great contributions to in many areas-improving the quality and organization of JMP learning resources, understanding how our customers are using and benefitting from our software (and understanding the challenges they still face in getting the most out of it), as well as improving the software and the processes by which we create, test and validate it. Internships are such a valuable part of getting real life experience in a field, and I know that these students will take what they have learned on to future positions and careers. Hopefully they will also continue to use and love JMP along the way!

- Hui: Worked on HTML5 support on Font Sizes. Reported 10 issues in Jira.
- Hunter: Reported some host issues for supporting the .jmpdoe file extension (S1587858), tested configurations for performance issues opening SAS data sets with extended attributes, and JMP 17 EA 2 validation.
- Mike M: Lots of work this week catching up on Mac image tests after Justin got them running again (thanks Justin!). Reviewed many of the 100’s of Mac diffs and sent a list of Hover Label tests to Lisa to investigate (thanks Lisa!). Found an axis fonts issue where a scaled-up font will overlap axis titles (no open JIRA yet). Investigated an undo code change that seemed to affect CCB image tests. Also checking that Outline Box << Close() message work inside of CCB, they seem to only work at the top level of the CCB report.
- Mandy: Tested the Table Shaper and tried to come up with examples for the EA2 video. Reviewed EA support tracks. Worked with Dahila Watkins on virtual join issue at JMP 15 that is problematic for user moving to 16 and opened a JIRA ticket.
Data Discovery
- Dave B: Fixed a scatterplot3d selection bug and worked with John Powel to figure out scatterplot text customization issues. Updated jmprunner so that Jira issues show up on the context menu for change list builds if the check in comments reference one. Updated jmprunner so if there is a debug build available, it can be run via the context menu (the nightly builds and builds we release to the public should have debug builds available but they are not created for change list builds). Updated the context menu for tables to include a dialog entry to make it easier to select multiple columns or multiple styles. Researched a couple of crashes.
- Dan S: Fixes for MakeCombinedDataTable in TableBox, Scrolling in ListBox and when adding new sections to a report, and a potential crash using filters in Text Explorer. Working on filtering options for JMP Clinical and stretching option in Control Chart Builder.
- Evan: Fixed several high-profile JSL classes symbol resolution bugs. Reviews for JSL Promises. Looking into current (internal) uses of XPath and Display Box subscripting to see if we can make some improvements there. Investigating how to best aggregate window specific content for search.
- Ernest: TableShaper: fixing bugs in Recode support for EA2, starting adding a “custom JSL” operation
Host
- Paul T: Added new content to OSIPI feature page here. Modified generated JSL to support a more object-oriented model that can support “Run” and “Modify” actions.
- Paul N: Updated libcurl in main and 16.2 from 7.77.0 to 7.78.0 21 July 2021 release, which fixes 5 CVE vulnerabilities. Pushed host separation of JThread, so the windows threading code is in hostJThread.cpp. C++11 and pThread code for threading remains in JThread.cpp. Early next week I will flip the #define on macOS to use C++11 threading instead of pThreads. Once the C++11 threading has proven stable, I will remove the pThread code from JThread.cpp. Continuing work with AWS based activation.
HTML5
- John Powell: Put final touches on our Interactive HTML Improvements feature page for EA2. Planned HTML5 ‘End of sprint’ meetings. Met with interviewers to plan full Interviews for our JavaScript Software Developer position and performed our first full interview for this position. Fixed issue with Significance Circles in Scatterplot Matrix (JMPHTML-1154). Answered a question on the JMP User Community about Local Data Filters in Interactive HTML. Started investigating a way to save, restore, and share local data filter settings while on JMP Live. (WEBJMP-348)

Note from Shannon
In this morning’s call for updates, I shared this story about an Olympic diver competing today who is from Morrisville. Thanks to Bob H for sharing some additional local Summer Olympics connections! Hope you all have a wonderful weekend!
As some of you may know, the training center and headquarters for the USA Baseball Olympic Team is here in west Cary. Tomorrow morning (6:00 AM EST) will be the gold medal game vs Japan.
Here is Bob’s picture of the team posing for the official team picture before they left the training facility for Tokyo:

He also reminded me that we have a 17-year old silver medal-winning swimmer from Cary, and the bronze medal winner in the women’s triathlon lives here too.
Wishing all the athletes luck as the games wind down! I have a lot of highlights still to watch, though I did catch several of the track and field throwing events already. I competed in discus and shot put in high school, but the numbers that these professional throwers put up there are just unbelievable to me!
One last local Olympics connection, but this one to the city of my birth (Rome, NY), not my adopted hometown (Cary NC). Former Olympian Anthony Washington competed in discus at the Olympics several times and graduated from Rome Free Academy (RFA) in the years while I was growing up so he was a definite hometown hero.
I always found it so cool that I had the chance to work out at the RFA gym during the summers in middle school and even had a chance to throw discus and get some pointers from Tom Myslinski, Washington’s coach who gets a nice mention in this article. (His wife, affectionately known as Mrs. Mys, was my English teacher one year at my high school.) Washington also has a son who excels at throwing events. Turner Washington recently won NCAA national indoor and outdoor shot put titles and an outdoor discus title for Arizona State but seems to have just missed the Olympics. Hopefully next time!
