Welcome to the JMP Development Update for July 23, 2021!
Thanks to Bob Hickey for providing the following update on JMP 16.1 progress. After JMP QA teams signed off last Friday, all remaining interested parties completed sign offs and final steps to validate 16.1 updaters this week. As a result, JMP 16.1 and JMP Pro 16.1 updaters went live yesterday for customers to download.
Employees can download JMP 16.1 from this link. In addition, the JMP Pro Trial and JMP Trial are now at release 16.1. The JMP Subscription and JMP Student Subscription 16.1 downloads have both been tested and are being prepared for release. JMP 16.1 and JMP Pro 16.1 full installers are expected to be released by SAS on August 24, 2021.
As we focus on JMP 17 features and integration of fixes into 16.2, the JMP team has done a great job of transitioning to using Jira for tracking newly found issues. Audrey and I have been maintaining this graph of new defect entries for JMP 17
throughout the cycle and it clearly shows that new entries have trailed off since we asked everyone to begin entering new items in Jira. Thanks, everyone!

We are currently entering new Jira issues with IDs in the JMP-5000’s and have just under 5000 items remaining in JMP-owned components in Defects. Together with the additional items open in other JMP-owned Jira projects (JMPHTML, JMPTOOL, JMPLIVE, JMPLOC, JMPDOC, etc), we officially have more items now open in JMP Jira projects than in Defects.
Special thanks to everyone who’s been working with me on conversions of defects open in 17.0 and/or 16.2 into Jira issues. I appreciate all the work you’ve been putting into reviewing Future track suggestions so that only still-relevant ideas can be converted into Feature Requests in Jira. We are making progress but still have work to do-let’s keep it up!
Thanks to Brady Brady, Dan Valente and Mia Stephens for discussing the results of an internal user survey on data preparation tasks at this week’s dev meeting. It was helpful to hear about topics commonly requested for customer demos, hidden (or not so hidden) features in JMP that are often perceived as missing, as well as remaining challenge areas for future work as we seek to broaden our user base. If you missed the meeting, you can find a recording in the Teams meeting channel or here.
Thanks to Tonya for sharing this week’s Beta/Crash/Telemetry tracks with crashes selected. You can find this report here in JMP Live: Beta/Crash/Telemetry tracks for the week of 7/23/2021 | JMP Live (sas.com)

JMP Development Updates
Statistics
- John Sall: A “Design Space” profiler is starting to work well. It is currently inside the Profiler and is working when there are only continuous factors and continuous responses. Given Spec Limits on the Y’s, it will help you set Spec Limits on the X’s (or “Proven Acceptable Ranges”) such that most of the possible combinations of settings of the X’s within their spec range will produce Y’s in their spec ranges. Previous profilers could not do this because their off-axis factors were fixed, rather that representing an interval. The profiler shows what percent of the volume withing X limits maps to within Y limits. The internal mechanism to do this is a brute-force filling the space with random uniform points, and simple counting, much simpler than trying to find a large hyper-rectangle to fit well within a non-linear constrained space. The profiler can be connected to another table to get scatterplot matrices showing the coverage. This feature should help address a big gap with the QbD requirements in the Pharma industry and should be applicable to many other industries. In the example below, only 4% of the X space is out-of-spec in the Y’s, and they are the corners you see in red. (JMP-4839)

- Jianfeng: The equivalence tests for standard deviations feature requested by users (JMP-3104) has been completed. The feature is highlighted on this Confluence page and is ready for EA2.
- Laura C-S: Searched for data for Discovery presentation. Fixed several bugs in SEM related to Summarized Data and row states. Helped triage defects in Choice/MaxDiff in preparation for moving tickets to JIRA, and fixed the easy ones along the way.
Stat Testing
- Tonya: Helped an SE with spec limits that change with a grouping variable. Answered a user community question about set control limits in CCB. Updating unit tests.
- Jacob: Testing Accelerated Life Test Design. Testing Automated Data Imputation (S1558703) and writing a new unit test for the different save options in ADI. Working on my Time Series add-in and presentation for Discovery.
Development Operations
- Jim: Disabled some Jenkins 16.1 projects. Enabled JMP 16.2 Sub, StudentSub, Trial and ProTrial builds and installers on Mac and Win for 16.2. Future hardware planning: acquired Windows 10 VM for upgrade to Windows 11; turned in High Sierra Mac Pro for Big Sur M1 Mini.
Documentation
- Sheila: Tested the 16.1 installers. Met with Nick about how to automatically copy Help files from one server to another and proceeding to testing script updates this afternoon. (We’re working on automating the Help publication process as much as possible.) Added the noindex metatag to the 16.0 Help so that Google will no longer index it. After Google indexes the new Help completely, only 16.1 Help will show up in search results. Uploaded the documentation PDF add-in. This add-in creates a Help > Books menu and contains links to the individual PDF files that are available at jmp.com/documentation. Started working on the File Exchange web pages for the translated documentation PDF add-ins. Cleaned up the FrameMaker files for the Friday Help build. Generated the Friday 17.0 Help. Worked with Dahlia to resolve an MS Distributables error when I installed Perforce on the Help software test computer. Thanks, Dahlia!
- Michael C: Worked on a lot of SEO-related updates across many areas of the statistical documentation. I think we are roughly a 1/3 of the way finished with these updates. Hoping to finish all of the stat chapters in the next few weeks.

- 27 Bug Created in the last 7 days
- 24 Stories / Bugs Closed in the last 7 days
Data Discovery
- Chung-Wei: For Tabulate, implemented PACK statistics of multiple analysis columns into one display column. This helps to make a more compact report, or to emphasize the affinity of the columns. For example, in this report, we can pack 2 display columns, the Mean of Profit and #emp into one display column.

Or for this example, we can now pack the mean of systolic and diastolic into one column.

- Evan: Several JSL classes fixes including _init_ no longer double evaling arguments and Method calls now only using callsite symbols for arguments. Defensive “fixes” for EvalContext mystery crashes. Reworking JSL symbol resolution to prefer locals over class members. Discussions about JSL promises for basic async functionality for JSL. Prototype of JMP command palette and discussions about feasibility.
- Ernest: Fix for displaying status text on 1st level sub menus (Win). Table Shaper fixes for handling table deletion and operations that use table inputs. Fixes to handle >32bit row count in parts of Term and DtSorter.
- Dave B: Added sorting and filtering support to DisplayBoxColDisplay, tracking down memory leaks, and fixed regression with table setIndexData.
DOE
- Caleb: Fixed some bugs related to the new ALT Design workflow (which will be debuting in EA 2!). Started to work on improving the MSA diagnostics based on the feedback we’ve gotten so far. Prepared for the hybrid Quality and Productivity Research Conference next week.
- Brad: Working on EZDOE UI. Reviewing a Technometrics paper. Met with the editorial review board of JQT for the annual report.
HTML5
- John Powell:
- Mayowa: Worked on fixing bug with text truncation in html caused by the difference in font size between JMP on desktop and in browsers. (JMPHTML-1093).
- Bryan F: completed JMPHTML-801 by adding the ability to ctrl and shift click multiple items in the legend and see corresponding selections in the HTML5 report. Started working on JMPHTML-803 to allow the user to resize a frame to better take advantage of available space. Also, worked with Mayowa on JMPHTML-981 which would allow customizing the legend font size.
- Josh M: Tested Gen Reg categorical profiler in preparation for moving it to test-ready status (JMPHTML-867). Met with Mia to discuss issues preventing the standalone prediction profiler from being rendered correctly as interactive HTML. She’d like to request fixes on the desktop. Fixed JMPHTML-880, a JavaScript crash when parsing XML. Also discussed with Clay and Laura what tooltips should look like for the categorical profilerJMP Live
- Aurora: Make download-as-a-project feature work with 17.0 data posts.
