Welcome to the JMP Development Update for July 30, 2021!
Now that JMP 16.1 web updaters are posted online after last week’s signoff, we are beginning to receive a few 16.1 tracks and crash reports from customers. Thanks to everyone in technical support and development who is helping triage those issues! Even while we forge ahead with JMP 17 work, we would like to address customer-reported problems that are safe to fix in 16.2, our last planned JMP 16 maintenance release.
Regarding JMP 17 feature work, don’t forget to make EA2-related updates to your JMP 17 Feature pages in Confluence ASAP. Mia is continuing to compile information from these pages into the Single Source Document (SSD) in preparation for highlighting features that are ready for testing in EA2 on the JMP Early Adopter page. As you all know, JMP 17 EA2 installers will be created to match next Tuesday evening’s build and will be made available to customers approximately 7-10 days later once QA teams have signed off.
Mia asks that you please check over what is captured in the SSD and let her know if you want to add or remove a feature. If you have specific questions you’d like to ask EA members as they test your feature, please add these to the Motivation and Summary section of your feature page. You can also check out this Confluence page for information on the Early Adopter Program (how to log in, how to invite customers to join, information about EA membership, and how the program works). Feel free to reach out to Mia if you have any questions about the process!
We will have two months between EA2 and EA3 to receive and respond to customer feedback. EA releases will then follow every ~5 weeks after that point. We plan to have 6 EAs before JMP 17.0 Feature Freeze (planned for 2/18/22). We will have 3 additional EAs after we pass our Feature Freeze deadline to allow us to continue to collect bug reports, crash reports and feedback for future feature releases. For a full list of JMP 17 dates, please visit the JMP 17 Dates page in Confluence.
We had great attendance for John Sall’s Design Space demo at yesterday’s JMP dev meeting, and it was terrific to see all the comments and interest from members of the extended JMP technical team around the world. I know John appreciated all your thoughts and ideas, so thanks for taking the time to share them! If you missed the meeting, you can find a downloaded copy of the demo recording here. You can also find John’s Confluence page for the feature here.
Speaking of JMP dev meetings, we have several upcoming meetings already on the schedule, starting with JMP student intern presentations at next week’s session. Also, Brady Brady asked me to share some materials the presentation on data preparation given last week, including this zip file: \\d73817\public\Dev Updates\dataPrepSurveyResults.zip containing the .pdf Brady showed during the meeting and a .docx file that explains the data prep process and outlines details about the other files in the zip file.
Thanks to Tonya for sharing this week’s details on Beta/Crash/Telemetry tracks with crashes selected. The JMP Live report is here:

JMP Development Updates
Data Discovery
- Xan: Added an option (default on) that displays tiny map shapes as marker dots. Affects DC in US maps, many island nations, and a few EUR countries, as shown here. It’s dynamic based on relative sizes and the overall display size, so let me know of situations where the dots seems too much or too little for usefulness.

- Dan S: Fix for empty window in platform launch error (Genomics and others). Fix clipped axis labels. Fix MS Word output - recently broken with boxToPicture changes. Use less horizontal auto-scroll to keep red-triangle in view.
- Evan: 1.2X speedup for :colname lookups. Improved error messages for locked classes, namespaces, and symbols. Now correctly resolving :colAndMemberNameConflict to the column rather than the class member. Deduplicating symbol resolution logic and trying to get locals to be preferred over class members.
DOE
- Caleb: Participated in the hybrid Quality and Productivity Research Conference (QPRC). My talk went well, as did the conference overall. In addition, I’ve been working on the ANOVA power explorer to give users the option to specify either group means, between-group variance (the current approach), or the maximum difference. I’ve also been working on a simulation feature for all of the sample size explorers.
- Ryan L: First push for Design Explorer in DOE, investigating if it’s ready for EA2.
Host
- Paul N: Worked on testing the separation of windows threading from portable code to allow the macOS to run using C++11 threading. Have now run baseline tests on windows and macOS using current pThreads and macOS using C++11 threads. An initial push is planned to separate the code, leaving macOS still using the current pThreading model. A day or two later, I will flip the #define in x.h on macOS to use C++11 threading. Worked on rehosting activation servers on AWS. A test database is set up with an EC2 instance that can talk to the database. Investigated a crash on windows with an OpenGL script that passed a missing value into one of OpenGL functions (JMP-5151).
- John Schroedl: Menu and crash fixes for Win Server 2012. Investigated custom window chrome. Fixed issue where JMP starter would not get focus after launch if it is the main window. Updated radio and checkboxes to show actual separator for the special case of "-" text.
HTML5- John Powell: Interviewed candidates for our JavaScript Software Developer position. Attended the JMP Live Steering Committee Meeting. Answered a JMP User Community question about how to increase the size of the Means and Standard Deviations caption in Graph Builder. Collected information about how text can be customized in JMP reports and created Jira stories to support customized text in Interactive HTML. Added support for customized Reference Line Label font size and color (JMPHTML-1119). Made our unit tests run more consistently on different environments.
- Mayowa: Changed html font to match font type used in JMP (Segoe UI on Windows, Helvetica Neue on macOS), worked on supporting font size customization in html for graph titles/OutlineBox (JMPHTML-1127) and Marker/Marker Labels(JMPHTML-1129).
JMP Live
- Tommy: Added a new option to JMP Live to enable JMP to send a report optimization setting to indicate whether or not to the report should optimize for best performance or best interactivity. Working on sending that setting to JMP to retain the value during regeneration. Also participated in a call with Bundesdruckerei to troubleshoot a publish problem they are experience trying to upgrade to JMP Live 16. We determined their desktop security configuration for TLS is not compatible with the SAS standards for TLS. We’re working on a change for 16.2 to allow customers to enable all supported TLS ciphers if they need expanded compatibility at the expense of security.
- Aurora: Support download-as-a-project of folder containing only data posts. Updated code & tests to un-skip some automated tests that we skipped at the start of 17.0 development. Marked many Jira issues as obsolete for JMP Live 17.0.
- Michael G: Integrating data posts with different aspects of the JMP Live Client. Details, manage data, in spaces. Various bug fixes.
Statistics
- Elizabeth: Had a major breakthrough with GLMMs! Will be able to do a first push for initial testing after EA2 is branched. We should have a pretty well-rounded platform for EA3 in October.
- Annie: Exploring paths to add a Label variable to CCB so users can have an IMR (Individuals and Moving Range) Control Chart using a column on the X-axis that has non-distinct values. (JMP-5127) Put together a presentation for the new Laney P’ & U’ charts to go along with EA2-a JMP Dev presentation is planned for 8/27.
- Laura C-S: Integrated several bug fixes to 16.2. Reviewed a sample chapter for a book proposal from Narayanan (P&G) on Multivariate Stats with JMP. Studied Chris’s new SEM numerics code. Posted another Medium article with links to the JMP Community.
- Peng: Continued working on the repeated measure degradation this week, experimenting ways to speed up the calculations.
Stat Testing
- Jacob: Testing Design Explorer and Compare Designs. Working on the add-in for my Discovery presentation.
- Tonya: Working on unit test cleanup.
Life Sciences Updates
- John C: Created a UI and framework for JMP Clinical 17 Set Study Preferences, which will offer the same widgets found on reports in a central location, and will determine the initial value for each report widget. Added functions to temporarily disable (and reenable) column properties, to work around a Value Order property being assigned that interferes with a sort step in data prep. Removed Report Navigator from Review Builder. Updated report finalize code to automatically save registered data tables to the temporary output folder for the report run.
Technical Support
- Duane: Today, TS says goodbye to Nick Holmes, but we know that he will contribute greatly to Audrey’s team. We are still awaiting approval for his replacement. I will be out next week, so Wendy will be your TS contact while I’m away. Here are the TS JMP Live reports. (JMP Live 16) Here is information regarding Customer Reported Bugs filed by TS (in Jira).

Development Operations
- Jim: Installing operating system updates on multiple Mac UT machines. Preparing for the JMP 17 EA #2 branch/build/installer tasks early next week. Investigating needed script changes for (Bob’s upcoming) WinOS JMP single-file installer.
- Nick R: Collaborated with Sheila on a Jenkins project that will generate the JMP help on a schedule each Friday and post it to test locations in preparation for promotion to production.
- Myron: Worked with Melanie on file encoding issues impacting the nightly process that converts doc FM source files to MIF and PDF files for L10N.
Documentation
- Sheila: Validated the PDF files and Help in the 16.1 installers. Tested the new version of FrameMaker. Met with Tom Pedersen to discuss adding Genomics Help to the main JMP Help for 17.0. Generated the 17.0 Help. Sent Judi Rourke info to update the support.sas.com Documentation section at https://support.sas.com/en/software/jmp-support.html (changes are now in review before being published). Tested Nick’s new method of copying the Help files from the SAS EXP server to the TEST server in preparation for publishing the Help. Note that the 17.0 Help is generated every Friday.
- Michael C: Stat doc writers have continued working on updating the 17.0 stat doc chapters for SEO considerations. Of 128 stat chapters to update, we have now updated 65 of them and made some initial edits in a few additional ones. The goal date to finish these is Oct 1, so we are well ahead of schedule! Special thanks to Susan C. as well for reviewing so many of our edits.
- Karen: Working with the other writers on updating the documents for SEO, that is to make sure that the first few sentences of major sections are descriptive of what a user will find in that section as to help with search results.

Note from Shannon
While looking for a Star Trek related comic today, I came across this interesting story about “Star Trek and its Wacky UK Comics”. The other day at lunch, Xan and I were talking about various Star Trek series including Star Trek: The Animated Series, which we both never watched before the Paramount+ app but which many of you who have seen it know, featured the original actors’ voices. I just recently heard about the upcoming computer animation series Star Trek: Prodigy (with a hologram of Captain Kathryn Janeway appearing as the Emergency Training Hologram J), but I had never before heard that there were some very off-brand Star Trek printed comics created before the series even came to the UK market. The article certainly gave me a chuckle.
I hear GalaxyCon is being held in Raleigh this weekend and William Shatner will be there, but as much as my son Hunter and I would probably enjoy attending that event given his recent Star Trek obsession, I think we’re going to wait on being around thousands of people for a while. Stay safe and cool, everyone!
