Introduction

Chemical Industry is diverse, the main product areas are basic chemicals, specialty chemicals, agriculture chemicals and staring materials, intermediates used by several consumer manufacturing operations. With a high investment on R&D, global estimates at 2019 value it at US$ 799 Bn. Engineers and scientists working in chemical industry develop new, efficient, innovative chemical products that forms starting materials for several other industries. World’s best and largest chemical industries need to deliver their quality compliant products on time while using lesser resources.
Any research and developments project runs on data. Having data analysis tool like JMP can empower researchers to quicken the product development, scale-up and manufacture efficiently without the hassle of a learning to code. JMP liberates the art and science of data analysis and puts it into the hands of scientists and engineers.
Who uses JMP In Chemical Industry?

Chemical industry requires to constantly innovate and create new products and processes often without any prior data supporting it. Data analysis can be help to them to under the process better and quicken development guidelines. JMP is trusted by researchers to do efficient data analysis, develop robust development solutions, execute development projects better.
Chemical industry needs robust manufacturing capabilities have better control over unit operations and produce products with consistent quality and increase process yields. JMP with its easy-to-use capabilities of process analytics and data visualization helps to enhance the manufacturing capabilities.

JMP with its end-to-end capabilities can deploy an array of sophisticated analytics without investing time and without a learning curve. JMP fulfills the needs of the chemical industry with its capabilities favored by the chemical industry.

Design of Experiments - Leverage on Mixture, classical, or Custom designs and analysis to learn better, quicker and obtain more information out of each experiment run.

Statistical Process Control and Process Capability - Take note on your process's stability and check for changes in variability. Determine whether or not your process is capable of staying within spec limits.

Data Visualization and Cleaning - Deploy the industry leading drag-and-drop visualizations - make it simple to examine data and update graphs using filters and a column switcher.

Data Mining and Predictive Modeling - using statistical approaches like as regression, partial least squares, - principal components analysis, and decision tree analysis, examine historical data to better identify key drivers of your response all without a line of code.

Process Optimization - achieve the best outcomes, and the best process settings in a design and gain sophisticated actionable insights into your data

Monte Carlo Simulation - Develop statistical models with simulation locate an area with the least sensitivity to variation, determine how robust your process is to variation.
Customer stories

“Regardless of whether someone is across the hall or across the ocean, if you’re looking at a JMP file together, you can drop some scripts in and find ways to extend the analysis.”
– Dave Sartori, Senior Data Scientist, PPG Industries
PPG Industries success story

“I am originally a chemist with almost no education in statistics, but I developed an honest background knowledge in stats just by using JMP. Obviously, the process of acquiring knowledge is infinite… but we have the JMP community of users and developers, which is a great help to progress.”

Johnson Matthey (Sep 2020 UK T1)

Johnson Matthey, which makes precious and specialty chemicals, has continued adding JMP licenses in 2020, with three separate deals in September and more on the horizon. After adding 15 JMP users, Johnson Matthey becomes the fourth biggest JMP customer in the UK, with a total of 146 users. Johnson Matthey has acquired new JMP Pro licenses as well.
Bernard McKeown says, “This growth reflects that Johnson Matthey, the UK's largest chemical company, is a natural target for JMP. I expect steady growth in JMP usage as Johnson Matthey rolls out design of experiments across R&D, and I expect as many as another 25 JMP users later this year.”
This growth is a result of the company quantifying the value of DOE in R&D. As a panelist on Statistically Speaking earlier this year, Johnson Matthey’s JMP enablement champion, Pilar Gomez, said, “Design of experiments was allowing us to obtain results saving at least 50% of the time and resources. In some cases, it was even 70%."
Bernard adds, “Johnson Matthey’s adoption of JMP Pro excites me, because they are clear about the value of Functional Data Explorer (FDE). Many of their experiments have a functional response – and they are concerned that they are throwing away valuable process knowledge by not using the complete profile in their analysis.
“Functional DOE gives them the solution. They have applied FDE to a number of experiments and provided the data sets to Chris Gotwalt for his development team to analyze. This analysis includes using functional DOE to determine the optimal particle size distribution for processes and to determine the optimal thermal profile to minimize consumption of expensive precious-metal-based catalysts. They are carrying out further exercises to see how FDE can help them develop better batteries, fuel cells and biocatalysts faster.”

BASF (28 May 2021 EUR Chem)

Germany-based BASF, the largest chemical producer in the world, recently added 100 more JMP licenses to bring its total to 750.
Getting to 750 has been a journey for Britta Schnitzer. She started working with BASF in 2017, but it was a very difficult account at that time. Says Britta, “BASF wanted to kick SAS and JMP out at that time due to contract and licensing deployment issues. We continued to work closely with the account and were able to bypass the official JMP product owner at headquarters after we found and established additional champions in Antwerp and Asia.”
Those new relationships paid off. In 2018, a multi-entity contract with a flat fee was signed, which enabled growth in Asia and several other sites. In 2020, the US contract was consolidated into the ME agreement with one single contract with a flat fee. As a result, JMP became the preferred tool for DOE in R&D and for manufacturing just in Antwerp; headquarters still wasn’t supporting JMP usage for manufacturing there.
Britta used LinkedIn to spread the usage of JMP and conducted multiple webcasts and on-site presentations. (In fact, Britta was such a fixture at BASF, many people there thought she was a colleague and not a JMP employee.) Britta says, “By inviting people to the webcasts and on-site training, which was only available to people who had JMP installed, the user number grew from 180 to 600 in three years. We bypassed the JMP product owner to grow JMP with these activities and had strong sponsorship from BASF Antwerp.”
In 2020, Bernd Heinen and Emmanuel Romeu worked with specific users to create use cases for JMP in manufacturing at the German site. In October, the manufacturing JMP champion presented a use case to management at BASF headquarters and got approval to run a project for one production line at BASF’s main site in Ludwigshafen, Germany, which will begin this August.
“Andreas Büchse, the JMP product owner at BASF, finally understands that he can´t stop JMP growth and that our activities will put him in the sweet spot for services, including training and project help,” says Britta. As a result, BASF added 50 licenses in March, all of which were consumed very quickly internally.
“Andreas is now working closely with us and encouraging BASF’s users to participate in our virtual JMP Day series, where he will also present a JMP overview and his services. To support the expected growth created by enhancing JMP usage in manufacturing and creating greater awareness via the JMP Day series, Andreas calculated that 100 additional licenses were needed, which were added in May. We are now at 750 licenses with BASF, and I am sure there are more to come over the next few years. The deals this year with BASF are a good example that it is beneficial to never give up and to keep working with these large customers. If you continue to grow awareness about the benefits of using JMP on the user side and make the global purchase process easier, it will pay out over time,” concludes Britta.
