JMP Journal questions around JSL and special charactersHi all,
We received a few questions during last weeks Mastering JMP Journals session. Hoping someone (i.e. @davidbarbour?) might be able to provide some insight:
1) Is there a script created behind a Journal? If so, how can we access it?
2) Is there a way to add special characters (i.e. greek characters, subscripts/superscripts) as text directly to a Journal? Attendee tried copying an equation from MS Word into a Journal text box but superscripts or subscripts did not translate correctly. Could it be keyboard-setting dependent or does JMP limit ability to type special characters as text in Journal?
I've played around with #2 a bit. Copying+pasting works depending on where you are copying the characters from. The Community mentions you can also change keyboard to enable some keyboard shortcuts (i.e. greek letters). The JSL-methods that help send Unicode text to data tables does not appear to work for journals. Any additional options we might try?
Thanks! Jeff
Re: JMP Journal questions around JSL and special characters1) Yes there's a script. You can access it by changing the .jrm extension to .jsl. It's not user friendly though, and I wouldn't recommend tinkering with it. It's incredibly brittle. Journals are scriptable - i.e. Brady's Sledgehammer - but most of that are loops sending messages to the elements in the display tree over and over. If someone wants to get really fancy with customization, I alway point them to application builder - it does everything that you can do in a journal with much more control.
2) Mac and PC both have symbol/keyboard explorer utilities (not the one in word/powerpoint - it's a separate little app that's part of the OS). That's what I use when I want a special character. I just search for the one I want and copy and paste it in. Super and subscripts don't work. You can get a little fancy by enabling HTML markup (a right-click option for journal text boxes added in 16). That will give you access to bold, italic and underline capabilities, but something like HTML markup bullets or numerated lists don't.
best,
M
Re: JMP Journal questions around JSL and special characters1)The easiest way I've found to get the script behind a journal is to first clear the log window, then run the JSL
Window(windName) << Get Script
where windName is a quoted string with the name of the journal. The code sent to the log will recreate the journal.
2) I assume you're looking for inline changes to text, otherwise you can select the entire block and use whatever font styles you want. I have used the markup option in the past to make inline changes to text, but can't seem to remember what tags will work for font styles.
doesn't work, nor does or . I am certain I have used this approach in the past to change the typeface, so I'm not sure if it has been disabled, or I'm using the wrong tags. I have never tried it with super/subscripts. Along those lines, have you tried the alt-keys (e.g., alt-185 for a superscript 1)? It's Windows only and you're limited to a few numbers, but it may do the trick.
Re: JMP Journal questions around JSL and special charactersThanks to you both for the tips!
