Welcome to the JMP Development Update for July 16, 2021!
Thanks very much to Audrey for sharing the good news that JMP test teams are DONE with installer validation for all JMP 16.1 products and flavors. A lot of work goes into the validation process at this stage. Audrey and I would like to thank all the testers for prioritizing this work and also thank the many dev team members who assisted testers in triaging feedback and responding to issues encountered during the installer validation process.
If you’re interested in the details, Audrey invites you to review the validation checklist in Confluence as well as the configurations tested for JMP, JMP Pro, JMP Subscription, JMP Trial and JMP Pro Trial, and JMP Live.
JMP Updaters will be available on the web soon after all interested parties have completed signoff. Customers who have already installed JMP 16.0 will be able to upgrade immediately to get all the fixes and goodies in JMP 16.1. Full installers and other web-released products will be available on or around August 24.
A great deal of effort went into JMP 16.1 by absolutely everyone in JMP Development over the last 6 months. Congratulations to all of us on another great release of JMP! And of course, full speed ahead as we continue working on final fixes for 16.2 as well as JMP 17.0 NFs.
Thanks very much to Russ Wolfinger for demoing at this week’s JMP dev meeting! Russ shared results from a recent internal survey about possible future directions for JMP Genomics. He also demoed a new platform for marker statistics that JMP G developer Luciano Silva has been working on to replace SAS Genetics functionality as JMP Genomics seeks to move towards a JMP/JSL only future release. If you missed the meeting, you can find the recording here. (As always, please let me know if you have any issues viewing the meeting recording. SAS has recently changed the default storage for recordings to OneDrive, so it should be accessible through the meeting, as well as through the Stream link above.)
Mia is already beginning to compile features for EA2 on the Single Source Document in advance of our second EA iteration planned to be created to match the evening build on 8/3/21. Please review the page and let her know if you’ve got something to add for EA2. And as always, please continue to update your feature pages. We rely on the information you provide on those pages to drive customer feedback through the EA program.
Thanks very much to Tonya for sharing this week’s details on Beta/Crash/Telemetry tracks with version 17.0 selected. It’s extremely helpful to be receiving many crash reports and suggestions this early in the cycle. I very much appreciate that internal and external users are continuing to report crashes. Please don’t forget to uncheck the anonymous box and report your crashes with an email address so we can follow up with you for more replication details if needed.

JMP Development Updates
Data Discovery
- Ernest: First cut of the JMP 17 NF Table Shaper has been pushed. New/Legacy/Refreshed menus, prefs, and SI now use icons on Windows. Thanks to John Schroedl for the menu support!
- Evan: Fixed issue with TopName::streamOut causing two copies of children to be written. Fixed JMP Query Builder crash related to not-truly-private private tables. Filed several Jira issues for other instances of this problem as well as some related crashes with Formula Dispatcher and JMP Query Builder. Working on changing symbol resolution code to prefer locals over class instance members.
- Dan S: Working on possible filter updates related to JMP Clinical, Fixed crash in the dt properties panel, defects triage for conversion to Jira, removing code for deprecated "Layout" feature.
DOE
- Brad: EZDOE project is on for JMP17. Thanks for your feedback and comments! The DOE team is working on the UIs for MSA and EZDOE.
- Caleb: Attended a virtual ENBIS workshop on identifiability in ML on Monday. Had a great beta lab session Wednesday evening getting feedback on that platform from our customers in China. Getting good ideas for JMP 17.0! Fixing bugs in MSA design.
Host
- Paul T: Continued progress on OSI PI integration:
- Added authentication options
- Added ability to retrieve plot and interpolated series in addition to raw data
- Added JSL integration, script saved to imported tables
- Added table variables:
- AF Path – Asset Framework path to the time series
- Series – “raw”, “plot” or “interpolated”
- Added units property to “Value” column
- Value attributes for raw data (e.g. “good”, “questionable”, “annotated” , “substituted” now each get their own column when that option is selected
- Path column containing AF Path is added to the data table when that option is selected
- Paul N: Met with Daniel Powell to help him start getting up to speed on the activation system; walked through the design and some of the code. Continuing set up for a copy of the activation system using an Amazon Linux 2 image as an AWS failsafe/backup to current system. Successfully ran a JMP activation and used the support pages from the single Amazon Linux 2 image. Having worked out the dependencies and configuration issues, the next step is to break that out to 3 Linux images with the individual pieces: the database, the external facing activation URL, and an image containing the internal website with support tools such as serial number generation, serial number lookup, and REST APIs to support John Jones’ subscription processes. Such a split provides for better security, and the ability to configure and balance the load needed for the individual parts of the activation process.
- Michael H: Trying to figure out why the JMP to MATLAB connection is not working in macOS Big Sur.
- John Schroedl: Menu changes to allow the new lifecycle icon. Fixed some Windows project issues found when building for ASAN. Checking JMP on Windows 11 preview.
HTML5
- Mayowa: Added support for customized legend font size to html5 (JMPHTML-981). Working on fixing bug with extraneous tooltip display outside of chart area (JMPHTML-605).
- Bryan F: Continued working on JMPHTML-801: Support selection in Legend linked to Graph, which enables users to see selections in the legend and also to make selections from the legend. I should have it ready for review early next week.
- John P: Attended a Design meeting where we discussed the JMP Live “Static” mode (WEBJMP-2416, now called “Best Performance” mode) that produces static graphs while allowing column switchers and local data filters to remain active. Submitted HTML5 Client changes (JMPHTML-978) to support this mode. Reviewed resumes for our Javascript Software Developer position. Triaged my FUTURE track defects and had Shannon convert them and Josh’s to Jira (Thanks Shannon!) Attended the JMP Live Retrospective and Planning Meeting.
- Josh M: Focused on categorical profilers for Interactive HTML:
- JMPHTML-765: Got the Nominal and Ordinal Logistic cases ready for testing, which meant first enhancing image regression stream test cases for these categorical profilers
- JMPHTML-867: Add image regression stream tests for Gen Reg categorical profilers, working to get this test ready too
- JMPHTML-986: Categorical profiler axis in HTML favors top level slightly more than JMP
- JMPHTML-677: S1583036: Progress indication mostly missing when open large Interactive HTML in JMP Live
- JMPHTML-869: Met with Clay and Laura to discuss this platform, suggested to management we go static on this one
- Opened a few profiler defects, triaged ones found by testers, and cleaned up a few more old defects before Jira conversion for final items.
JMP Live
- Aurora: Using the new response screening platform to create the JSL only version of Adverse Event Incidence Screen in JMP Clinical 17. Working with Dan S to set up filters for some of the widgets we are adding to allow us to remove the old options dialog and allow for more interactivity.
- Katherine Li: Configured an overlay and card to display an expired license over a JMP Live report.
- Josh M: Continued design work on the JMP Live data table viewer.
Statistics
- Peng: Working on the Repeated Measure Degradation platform. Reviewed an article for one paper where Bill Meeker is a co-author. Investigated one numerical discrepancy issue reported by Tom Little, which turned out to be due to his misunderstanding on the Stability Test procedure.
- Elizabeth: Continued work on GLMMs. Added variance ratio and percent total variance columns to the Fit Mixed variance components report from Russ’s request during Thursday’s dev meeting (JMP-4809).
- Laura C-S: Fixed bugs in the Model Comparison table and Profiler in SEM. Improved the report of Total and Indirect Effects by adding bar plots to the corresponding tables in the report. Mapped color onto the estimates of the path diagram such that negative values are red and positive are blue. Learning about existing profiler functionality that I haven’t implemented in SEM so I can add it in the future.
Stat Testing
- Jacob: Testing Accelerated Life Test Design and updating the ALT unit tests for the new workflow in JMP 17. Testing Make KFold Validation Column. Verifying Defects and JIRA issues for JMP 17.
- Tonya: Cleaning up unit tests. Testing Laney charts.
Life Sciences Updates
- Wenjun: The Life Sciences testing team appreciated a very helpful demo from Audrey Shull about creating unit tests for JMP platforms. Chris Kirchberg, Luciano Silva, Thomas Pedersen and Wenjun Bao got together to discuss new requests for JMP for genetics data analysis in JMP Pro.
- Rebecca: Using the new response screening platform to create the JSL only version of Adverse Event Incidence Screen in JMP Clinical 17. Working with Dan S to set up filters for some of the widgets we are adding to allow us to remove the old options dialog and allow for more interactivity.
- John C: Incorporated the custom, enabled, addin home folders into the set of JMP Clinical 17 report definitions. Updated Create Static Report’s “Report Options Filtering” section to use the new widget references. Replaced obsolete report trans-id references in favor of labels as defined in report definitions and removed the “Show help embedded in current window” feature. Added automatic horizontal stretching of combobox widgets in ComboBoxClass, to fill the width of report Options panels. (Thanks Dan S. for additional background of, and investigation into, JMP displaybox stretching issues.)
Product Management
- Dan V: Presented status update on standardized messaging project with Bryan Yan to worldwide JMP sales management. Prepping for Americas midyear meetings, where we will role-play using the standardized messaging materials and Red Triangle Industries to simulate a sales call and demo. OSIsoft Pi data connector discussion and call for feedback with Kemira. Prepping for Dev meeting on the Data Prep project with Brady and Mia next week.
- Mia: Organized a Type 1 MSA customer feedback session, and an internal feedback session/discussion on Model Screening. Organizing a session with Chandramouli Ramnarayanan (new hire on the Global Enablement Team) for JMP technical field staff on “JMP in Pharma: QbD and the CMC Pathway”. If you are interested in joining, please let me know.
Technical Support

Development Operations
- Jim: Reported multiple new ASAN, LEAKS and assertion failures; marked prior DEFECTS for conversion to Jira tickets. Applied the CIS update to 15 machines, plus snapshots for all testing VMs.
- Shannon: Converted defects to Jira issues for various team members. Triaged JMP 16.X mystery crashes and gathered details on customer comments and crash stacks into new issues in the JMPTEST project to enable further investigations that might help us replicate these customer problems. Tried test cases for existing defects, added comments and screened cases lacking crash signatures through the crash system.
- Angelita: Wrapping up 16.0 and 16.1 projects and preparing for the new release. I also worked on few book returns. Also stopped by the SAS office in Milan while visiting Italy!

Documentation
- Sheila: Because we’re upgrading to FrameMaker 2020 and FrameScript 7, I installed the software first on jmpdoc-test, the software testing VM. I have an open issue with Perforce to be resolved and then will test the entire Help generation process. Documented the current Help generation process in Confluence. Generated the 17.0 help. Going forward, the JMP 17 help will be created weekly using a parameterized, scheduled Jenkins job that Nick recently updated for JMP 17.0.
System/Host Testing-Cary
- Audrey: Finishing up 16.1 testing, package validation for SOE, demo for Life Science team about writing JSL unit tests.
