Welcome to the JMP Development Update for July 2, 2021!
This week, JMP testing teams in Cary and Beijing began validating our slate of JMP 16.1 installers in preparation for signoff later in July. Thanks to much hard work by all of JMP development, we were able to complete work on 16.1 deliverables on time and started the validation of the installers earlier than planned. Thank you all!
Also, thanks to Xan Gregg for presenting at this week’s dev meeting! Xan demoed various selection modes for JMP graphs and answered a number of questions from curious JMP platform developers. If you missed his talk about ongoing work on partial selection on Thursday, you can see a recording here. Xan would appreciate you sending him feedback as you try out these new updates, as they are still a work in progress.
Also in JMP 17 news this week, Josh Markwordt announced some major progress on profiler support for interactive HTML and JMP Live: categorical responses are now supported for additional platform profilers. Josh emphasizes that his work on interactive HTML profilers is still ongoing, and he plans to highlight their availability to EA customers in EA2. He would be grateful for some extra testing from internal users in the meantime. This table that Josh shared with the HTML5 testers summarizes the current state of profiler interactivity with categorical responses in various JMP platforms:

Josh says, “The categorical axis should behave close to JMP although font differences in the browser may cause tick mark collisions/thinning to occur at slightly different thresholds.” He also shared the following details about the four profilers with Xs in the table above:
- Neural and Generalized Linear Model – these platforms were not implemented. With this push they are expected to come out static and display "Profilers with categorical responses are not interactive in this platform." in the log.
- Functional Data Explorer and Loglinear Variance – these platforms should give an error if you try a categorical column in the response role in JMP, so it should not be possible to create one with a categorical response to output to HTML5/JMP Live.
- The standalone profiler is still being evaluated, comes out interactive for now. This will probably result in the most bugs should you test it.
Josh is hoping you will be able to give these newly interactive cases a try in a current build of JMP 17.0. You can enter Jira issues (linked to the items listed above for each platform) to detail bugs, observations, requests, etc. Or, if you are not a Jira user, you can send your feedback directly to Josh.
Thanks to Tonya for sharing this week’s details on beta/crash/telemetry tracks with crashes selected. As you can see, the launch of JMP 17 EA1 is generating quite a bit of interest from a variety of customers!

Important Upcoming Dates
- JMP 17.0 EA2 – 8/3/21
- Please visit Confluence for a full list of JMP 16 and JMP 17 dates.
JMP Development Updates
Data Discovery
- Xan: Unquoted colors in JSL will now generate an error when the preference is set to do so. Add selection support to boxplots in Oneway. Constrain label placement time to fix performance regression.
- Dan S: Property panel improvements, Dashboard Builder crash fixed, fix open/close of filter in Projects, fix for disappearing outlines after image save, update for box namespaces, batch performance for saving large numbers of formulas in Response Screening, investigating patient profiles for Clinical and transform columns that use Exclude state from Local Data Filters.
- Evan: JSL Classes bug fixes. Interviews for tester position. Writing v17 feature pages for Display Box Data Storage (namespaces) and With Window Handler.
- Dave B: Fixing journal, streaming and display issues with plotcol axis, added filter where option for tableboxes (similar to select where), tablebox context menu updates to allow consumers to customize the context menu, and trying to fix some of the noise in the html image tests.
DOE
- Brad: Responding to reviewers of the EZDOE AddIn prototype. Current respondents are uniformly positive about the potential benefit of such a tool.
Host
- John Schroedl: Debugged problems with passing varargs and bad return values from Call DLL. Apple broke varargs (…) argument passing in their M1 implementation but taking the TK patch for that broke the Win implementation. Rebuilt and updated sample DLL shipped with JMP.
- Michael H: Finished implementation of the new .jmpdoe file type for Mac. Working on static analyzer issues identified by the macOS Monterey beta version of Xcode.
- Bryan B: Wrapping up the ability to send multiple HTTP Requests to run in parallel in C++ and JSL. It will block with an optional progress bar.
HTML5
- Bryan F: Participated in HTML5 Sprint retrospective and review meetings for Sprint 3 and participated in planning for Sprint 4. Worked on integrating the HTML5 dark theme with JMP Live (JMPHTML-934), displaying categorical color roles in various tooltips (JMPHTML-917, JMPHTML-962). Fixed various bugs for HTML5 including problem where Dark Mode impacted readability of text in selected rows (JMPHTML-920), icon updates when switching between dark/light themes (JMPHTML-938, JMPHTML-939), and issues with treemap labels (JMPHTML-694) and data filter-treemap interactions in JMP Live (JMPHTML-940).
- John Powell: Held a Sprint Retrospective Meeting, and Sprint Review Meeting to wrap up HTML5 team’s 3rd JMP 17 Sprint and a Sprint Planning Meeting to kick off our 4th JMP 17 Sprint. Proposed a UI design for JMPHTML-972 to allow user to control when the JMP Live Local Data Filter calls back to the server. Started investigating JMPHTML-978 to support a mode where all graphs in a JMP Live post are static, but the Local Data Filter and Column Switcher remains interactive. Improved JMP Live Local Data Filter’s Inverse mode (JMPHTML-821).Removed warning about support for statics on categorical variables (JMPHTML-787).
JMP Live
- Katherine Li: Finished up fixing displaying the JMP Live licensing error and integrated it into 16.2. I have been working through the next steps of determining how to best display the error and restrict access with an expired license in JMP Live.
- Michael G: Adding warnings enabled control to spaces. More adjustments to Dark Mode. Removed groups code from the client that referenced group features that were removed for spaces.
- Aurora: For JMP Live Access Control, added support for "All Users" group, made more use of allow_download, made allow_view a necessary condition for membership in a space, and stripped out some old groups-based logic. Also, investigating a few corrupted posts on JMP Live Sales.
Statistics
- Laura C-S: Fixed a performance issue that brought down the option of saving factor scores from ~35 seconds down to ~2. Met with Arati and Larry to discuss plans to post a text analysis article to Medium with links to the JMP Community –the article has had 2k views in only a couple of days! Met with James to discuss improvements to total/indirect effects in SEM. Added option for users to specify their own independence model to the SEM platform (very useful for longitudinal models):

- Peng: Working on the repeated measure degradation platform this week. Also spent some time responding a tech support inquiry on time series modeling.
- Annie: Fixing issues related to the new Laney P’ and U’ charts.
- John Sall: Improved handling of very large number-of-responses models (JMP-3522). Working on further changes to Process Screening charts (JMP-3452) and additional updates described here in Confluence.
Stat Testing
- Mark: Attended DOE Team meetings for Jacob. Evaluated EasyDOE prototype. Prepared draft of presentation with Chris Gotwalt and Ron Kennett.
- Tonya: Updating unit tests due to recent changes with the QQ and PP Plots in distribution. Testing the Laney Prime charts in CCB.
Life Sciences Updates
- Wenjun: Jira migration discussions; requesting updates to JMP C Jira project to mirror JMP project customizations.
Technical Support
- Duane: TS wants to give a shout-out to Bryan Boone. Bobby shared that Bryan has been incredibly helpful with SAS integration issues recently, and even jumped on a Teams meeting with little notice. Bryan is always responsive, so I’m not surprised he continues with this practice. Thank you, Bryan!
- We continue to work with our customers. There’s been no summer slow-down yet. Here are the TS JMP Live reports. (JMP Live 16) Here is information regarding Jira issues reported by TS.

Development Operations
- Shannon: Reviewed and reported various mystery crashes in 16.0 and 17.0. Thanks very much to Dave B for help with test cases! Converted FDE items to Jira issues and moved various other items from Defects to Jira. Replaced defect links in Confluence pages with links to migrated Jira items so that the status of items automatically updates in the page. Jira support.
- Myron: Finalized Jira filtering-related Testbot bug fixes.
Documentation
- Sheila: Working on production FrameScripts. Began adding metadata to 14.2 help so Google won’t index it. I’ll later add the metadata to 15.0, 15.1, and 15.2 help. And when the 16.1 help is published, I’ll add the metadata to the 16.0 help. Regenerated the localized JMP Live/Public help. Solidified process for requesting incremental help updates. Created small sample JA and ZH projects so Roger can verify the footers and headers.
