On May 26, JMP offered our latest Technically Speaking live webinar, How can your organization design products, processes and systems that exceed customer expectations? With more than 500 registrations and attendees from a number of countries and industries, the event was certainly a success – in a series of successes for the program.
The keynote was delivered by Martha Gardner, Chief Engineer of Quality at GE Aviation. Champion of GE Aviation’s Proactive Quality Framework, Gardner discussed how organizations can use quality engineering to design products, processes and systems that meet or exceed customer and market expectations, while managing uncertainty while staying relevant and competitive in an increasingly complex world? After her keynote, Gardner was joined by Wende Wilson of Schweitzer Engineering Labs and Bernard Goguelet of Deloitte Consulting for a discussion around how with quality engineering you can systematically use data to find more effective ways to get things done throughout the product life cycle, while minimizing the associated cost, waste and time.
To help JMP sales team engage in more meaningful and productive post-event conversations with customers and prospects, we’ve created the following list of recommended resources to position now that the event has concluded. This list pulls appropriate assets from across our web site.
If you have any questions about recommendations related to this event, please feel free to contact me.

For starters, send attendees to our Quality Engineering, Reliability and Six Sigma with JMP Application Area Landing Page at https://www.jmp.com/en_us/applications/quality-reliability-six-sigma.html. Because QE, Reliability and Six Sigma is one of JMP’s official application areas, we’ve developed a sophisticated “iceberg” page for this app area. It gives a comprehensive overview of JMP’s capabilities in this area, lists out a few of our best resources, and gives visitors an up close view of JMP in action.
You might also want to consider positioning our Statistical Thinking for Industrial Problem Solving, free online course. This whole course is seven modules, totaling about 30 hours of self-paced learning. All are excellent, but consider highlighting these two modules for your customers who attended the 5/26 Stat Speaking event: Quality Methods and Decision Making with Data. The Quality Methods module talks tools for quantifying, controlling and reducing variation in your product, service or process. Topics include control charts, process capability and measurement systems analysis. The Decision Making with Data module talks about tools used for drawing inferences from data. Topics include statistical intervals and hypothesis tests, how to calculate sample size and see the relationship between sample size and power.
Finally, consider sending attendees to our jmp.com landing page for organizations using JMP. The new Leveraging Data Across the Organization demonstrates the benefits of JMP for the organization – beyond the individual. Landing page has been translated in French, German, Japanese, Italian, Korean, Chinese, and Spanish. Call to Action is “Schedule a Demo” so could be a good qualifier for additional follow up.
As for other QE assets, I’d recommend the following:
Make Statistical Thinking Your Strategy for Solving Problems, Analytically Speaking
Though a little older, this Roger Hoerl and Ronald Snee webinar hits on many of the topics discussed in the May 26 Stat Speaking event. The webinar talks about how statistics provide a strategic perspective for process improvement in any business. The two explore the philosophy of statistical thinking, the importance of experimental design to any organization, and the joy they get from solving problems that really matter. Near the end of the webinar they discuss practical implementation including adopting quality initiatives in non-manufacturing processes, barriers, the importance of smart, iterative experimentation and other best practices.
Stay relevant and competitive with modern quality engineering, Statistically Speaking
Christine Anderson-Cook of Los Alamos National Laboratory delivers the keynote. In this talk, titled Avoiding Common Pitfalls in the Early Stages of Improving Quality, she explains why it is essential to spend time identifying the right problem before beginning a quality engineering project. She talks about practical defining metrics, tradeoffs and costs associated with quality projects.
Why quality improvement is imperative in the big data era, Statistically Speaking
Roger Hoerl gives the keynote for this Statistically Speaking event. During his talk he gives an overview of the quality engineering landscape, discusses the reasons why quality improvement is an imperative in the big data era, the limitations of current state-of-the-art quality improvement approaches and the next era of continuous improvement. Also covers the idea of quality improvement through process improvement, the importance of leadership and keeping the focus on problems rather than tools.
Best Practices in Reliability Data Analysis, Series of Five Webinars
This example-based webinar series, led by Dr. William Meeker of Iowa State University, explains the concepts behind a variety of powerful statistical techniques for analyzing reliability data. Accompanying demos show how to implement the techniques using JMP software.
Explaining Reliability Growth, White Paper
Also from Dr. Meeker, this white paper talks about ensuring quality of manufactured goods to stay competitive in an increasingly global marketplace. Reliability of products and processes is a critical component of the quality equation; “Reliability is quality over time.” This paper focuses on the general area of reliability growth, whose goal is to increase product and process reliability. Meeker leads a general discussion of the reliability growth methodology and describes some of the technical details behind the methodology.
