Getting Started with JMPWelcome to our JMP Interns! We're very glad you're here. You have three main goals for your first week.
1 - Get settled.
- Peruse information in the New Hire Checklist. Ask us about anything you wish. Begin tasks such as compliance/ethics training, which we ask you complete within 2 months.
- Learn to use Outlook and Teams.
- Leave Teams open at all times so you get reminders for meetings and such. (Outlook has reminders too.)
- Both tools have calendar which are integrated with each other. Put any personal appointments on your calendar so it is known when you will be away.
- You should see several orientation events in the first two weeks for which you have been sent meeting requests. Accept all of these, and plan to attend.
- Review materials given to you by HR, get familiar with resources such as the Library, Lynda.com, Yammer, etc.
- Update your internal profile picture. On the SWW, in the Find People search box, find yourself. On your profile page, upload a picture that you like.
- Go to this page about 2021 JMP Interns, edit it to add your photo and some other basic information about you, and Publish your changes.
2 - Install software and other administrative tasks.
- Map network drive: \\jmpsrv01\dev. You will have to enter credentials – be sure to put the CARYNT domain in front: (carynt\yourid, yourPassWord)
- Install JMP 16.1 here: \\jmpsrv01\dev\install\JMP16\JMP1610\WinOS\JMPPRO
- Go to the latest dated folder. COPY the entire folder containing setup.exe to your desktop. Run the installer and accept defaults.
- Open JMP. If prompted for a license file, get one from \\jmpsrv01\dev\JMPPER. It should match JMP 16 and JMP Pro. Again, COPY it to your desktop, then select the copy you saved to your desktop in the dialog.
- < jmp="" 16.1="" is="" in="" the="" final="" stages="" of="" development.="" the="" build="" you="" get="" won="">
- (Optional ) Install JMP 17.0 here: \\jmpsrv01\dev\install\JMP17\JMP1700\WinOS\JMPPRO (Optional – talk to your manager about whether you need JMP 17)
- Go to the latest dated folder. COPY the entire folder containing setup.exe to your desktop. Run the installer and accept defaults.
- Open JMP. If prompted for a license file, get one from \\jmpsrv01\dev\JMPPER. It should match JMP 17 and JMP Pro. Again, COPY it to your desktop.
- < jmp="" 17="" is="" in="" middle="" stages="" of="" development="">
- Interns in R&D groups, install Perforce: http://sww.sas.com/jmpmediawiki/Perforce (If you have an account, you should have an email from Jim Borek about this with more details.)
- Browsers: I highly recommend you install Chrome instead of Edge/IE/Safari.
- Outlook – make sure your manager can view the details of your calendar.
- In Outlook, go to File->Options->Calendar
- Change the permissions for viewing Free/Busy information->click button
- The default Reviewer should have permission to view Full Details.
- Get any other software internally you might want from the Software Download Portal. If what you see is not listed here, ask your manager how to get it.
3 - Learn JMP
- Complete the New User Welcome Kit Learning Road Map. You will likely need to register first. Print/Save the certificate and show to your manager when completed
- Run the Data Table Tour application which gives an overview to the JMP Data Table. Experiment with all the options and get a grasp of all the things you might do with the table. Go to \\jmpsrv01\users\shull\Interns\Training and open The Data Table Tour.jmpapp.
- View JMP On-Demand Demos from the On Demand page. Suggested videos:

- First JMP Project - Data Science Project. This will be your first project with us this summer and all interns should participate. The primary goal is to take a graph that was found in the mainstream media (either a good one or a bad one) and recreate it using JMP. If it’s a good graph, then we want to be able to easily recreate it in JMP. If it’s a bad one, then we’d like to use JMP to show a better example. The secondary goal is for you to assess how easy it is to do things in JMP, once you get the data imported. Where do you get stuck? What do you have to ask for help with? What’s intuitive and what’s confusing? What did you wish you could do easily? Be prepared to do an informal demo of both examples before the end of the week.
- Choose 1 ‘good’ graphic example. It can be anything. (Examples of ‘good’ graphics on Reddit. Here’s one example that could probably be done with JMP. You have to click through a few times in his animation to find the graphics)
- Choose 1 ‘bad’ graphic example. (Again, Reddit.) Here is a specific example of an awful graph. ‘Bad’ graphs are difficult to read and can usually be replaced with simply a different view, or sometimes broken out into 2-3 graphs that show the information clearly.
- Find the data. This will be the hardest part.
- Get the data into JMP. This should be the easy part.
- Figure out the format of the data. Clean up the data, if needed. This will probably be the most time-consuming part.
- Create pretty graphs in JMP. Customize it to look nice, including adding nice titles and colors. This will be the most fun part.
- Create a brief presentation to explain what you did and how you did it in JMP. Bonus points if you present using a JMP journal instead of PowerPoint. Be prepared to share it with a small group.
- (Optional) Save data files and any presentation files in this location: \\jmpsrv01\users\Shull\Interns\2021\2021 Show and Tell.
- If you ever run into a crash or a strange behavior, try to find the series of steps to make it happen again, then show it to your manager or mentor. We’re in the business of software development, so it’s all our jobs to help make the quality better.
