Our amazing Tech Support team provided a great update to some common questions around upgrades, installs, annual license, subscriptions, etc. If you have questions on this information please reach out to @Bobby_Riggs or @Dahlia_Watkins.
General Terminology
For the sake of communicating with customers we suggest trying to educate them on our terminology.
- License files and SID files are the same. They are text files.
- The terms SAS Software Depot and installation media are the same.
- References to JMP in this slide include JMP PRO.
- Presentation license and server license are the same.
- Upgrade – requesting a new major release of JMP.
- Update – is to download an installer for a dot-release of JMP (15.0 -> 15.2).
Annual License
Depot Current Process:
- There are only two options to obtain a depot:
- Electronic download using the SAS Download Manager.
- Email sent to site rep. with the header: “JMP® Software Order <order#>”
- DVD sent via postal mail. Special cases only.
- For electronic downloads, an email is sent with instructions to download the installation media (depot).
- The license is provided within the depot in the “sid_files” folder. It is automatically applied during installation. The license can be replaced with a more up-to-date file.
Depots Best Practices:
- Keep the depot in its original file structure after downloaded or received.
- Each order has a max of 3 downloads. Once exceeded they receive the error Maximum number of downloads for this order has been exceeded. They must contact Technical Support to increase the max download count.
- Move the depot to a network share, cloud storage, DVD or flash drive to distribute to other users. This prevents each user from having to download the SAS Software Depot.
- If placed on a network share, place each depot (order) in a folder to specify the version of JMP that order represents. For example, this customer (company A) still uses JMP 8 – 14. They downloaded each order and placed each order in a separate folder on a network.
Installation and Deployment Current Process:
- JMP 15 and higher is 64-bit only.
- JMP AL is installed via the setup.exe within the depot. On Mac a .dmg is used to install.
- Admin rights for the user account is required for installation. During installation, we create a folder in Program Files and put the license file within that folder.
- The license file within the <SAS Software Depot>\sid_files\ folder is converted to a JMP.PER file and placed in the root installation directory.
Installation and Deployment Best Practices:
- We always recommend Right-clicking the setup.exe and choosing Run as Administrator (Windows only). Though this is not always a required step.
- For install help we recommend:
- Step-by-step: Installing JMP® on Windows
- Step-by-step: Installing JMP® on Macintosh
- Small offices (1-10 users):
- Should consider letting each user install manually.
- Larger offices (10 + users):
- Should consider Installing JMP® using Silent Setup
- Consider Installing JMP® using Silent Setup when sites want installs to occur with zero interaction from their users.
- FYI: We do not support the distribution of our software through SCCM, Altiris, or other mass software delivery systems. These are packaging mechanisms that we cannot control.
- Users are free to try these tools, but we do not support them. Technical Support will try to help, but in moderation.
Renewals
Best Practices:
- When a renewal license file is received, replace the SID in the SAS Software Depot with the renewal. This way, users who install or re-install from the depot will automatically apply the newest license.
- Alternatively, the site rep can send the license to each user to apply manually.
- Company A received renewals (license keys) for versions 8-14. They will take each license, for each version of JMP and place them in the sid_files folder for each depot in the folders below. Then they will delete the old renewals from each depot.
How to Use SID files:
- All JMP license files have a 90-day grace period after the listed expiration date.
- A user is prompted to renew when they are 45 days into the grace period.
- They navigate to the newest SID using the Open License prompt.
- JMP takes the contents in the SID and creates a JMP.PER
- JMP uses the contents of the JMP.PER to determine if JMP is licensed.

Upgrades and Updates Current Process and Best Practices:
JMP Subscription
Current Delivery Process:
- Users purchase JMP via the Buy JMP Personal License section.
- User receives a JMP Order Confirmation (subject) email.
- Summary of the order placed.
- User receives a 2nd email Your order has been fulfilled (subject).
- Contains link to download JMP subscription.
- Serial number (10-digits starting with “A”).
- Term of the license (subscription).
Miscellaneous
Installation:
- JMP Subscription is 64bit only.
- Upon downloading, instructions to install and activate are provided at the download page.
- BP: We always recommend Right-clicking the installer and choosing Run as Administrator (Windows only). Though this is not always a required step.
- Users should not share this installer or serial number with other users as it is a single-user license. Technical Support will only allow activations for the owner of the subscription.
Renewals:
- JMP Subscription is auto-renewed using the credit card the user provides when they purchased.
- Users can cancel their subscription via the My Subscriptions page.
- Users wanting to transfer their subscription must cancel their subscription and allow the new user to purchase a new subscription.
Upgrades:
Troubleshooting
- IT or users must mark emails from SAS that got to junk/spam, so they are not seen as spam or junk. There is very little we can do to control this filtering.
- Send users to Technical Support when they cannot find order emails for JMP or JMP Subscription in their spam, or junk folders.
